Black Eye

On May 20th (seven weeks ago), my son hit his eye on Daddy's truck. He had a horrible bump and we had it x-rayed at an immediate care clinic. They told us that he didn't break his eye socket or anything and told us to watch him overnight for concussion, etc.

When we got back to town, we saw our pediatrician about something else and I asked about the 'shadow' still around his eye - three weeks later. He also has what will probably be a scar on his upper eyelid near his brow.

Now, seven weeks later, he still has that 'shadow' surrounding his eye in addition to the read mark. I've been putting scar lotion on the red place twice a day but my husband is really worried about the 'shadow.' (I'm not as worried since the black eyes I've had in my life - 2 - lasted a long time...) My husband would like for us to see a specialist about the red mark and the 'shadow' - what do you think?

How long should it take for the 'shadow' to go away? Should we visit another doctor to make sure nothing is damaged? Is my husband over-reacting and we need to wait it out?

Thanks for your help!

I had a little boy fall off the stool in the bathroom and got a huge bump on his forhead. It took 5 mos to almost be gone and then I looked and it was black again. He fell at home and blacked it again in the same place. Today he still has a bump but not like like it was. Bruising can take a long time. I would not worry about it. Boys wrestle and bump themselves a lot. I was told my son would be in ER a lot and he broke his arm three summers in a row. So good luck and God Bless. G. W

This brings back a memory of my son being hit in the eye with a baseball. It seems like it was discolored for over a year. And even after a year, I could still see the mark after he had been out in the sun. It's been about 4 years now and I had totally forgotten about it. As a parent, you want to get every reassurance that you can that your child will be ok. Your son's eye is probably fine, but do whatever it takes to put your minds at ease.

I would definitely take him to an optometrist or ophthalmologist to make sure his retina is okay and there is no damage there.

This recently happened to my 3 year old. 10 days after it happened we had his 3 yr checkup with his pediatrician so I asked about it. Our doctor said that it could last up to a year & not to worry about it. It has been about a month now and still looking kind of green so I'm sure it will be there for a while. Good luck with your son!

I'm not sure what you mean by "shadow," but's been quite a while. I would probably see another doctor, if for no other reason than to ease my husband's mind. Better safe than sorry, right?
