Bleeding Diaper Rash

Caldesene powder Price $5.79 only sold at walgreens that is the best I have ever seen my sister as a little baby would get the worse rashes I have ever seen blister, bleeding and so on my mom use to use it on her and it would take it away right away. My sister is now 22 and they still selling the same powder because it works try it its the best 5.79 you will ever spend.

I had this problem when my kids were little and I would suggestion there things:
- Never use wipes on them 'til the rash is totally gone.
- You can soak their bottoms in Domeboro solutions (you can get this at Walgreens) and it helps the skin to recover and stop bleeding very fast.
- Dr. Smith diaper rash cream at Walgreens works wonders to heal and prevent daiper rashes on my 2 kids.

My daughter also had terrible diaper rash that often can ends up with scabs and scars. What I finally found to work is lots of baths with baking soda, lots of naked time (I clean up a lot of pee) and then slather on the Walgreens brand of diaper ointment. Just their generic tube of stuff. It's super strong and works quite well. Then, when the rash is gone, I keep using Aquaphor to keep it at bay. It's gentle to my daughter's skin and has kept the rash gone for quite a while. Good luck. It's a hard issue to tackle.

My son (21 months) has gotten that as well. When he gets a bad rash, this is what I do. When I change his diaper, I wipe as gently as I can. I then let him air dry (run around for about 10 mins or so). I put Neosporin on the bleeding or very red rash part, then apply over that (all over the diaper area) some cornstarch. Not much, but just enough to dry any more wet spots and keep the area dry as well. If it is too difficult to wipe him off, I put him in the shower and then continue on with the diapering routine.
I have been using Balmex on his little buttski (our name for his butt, we are Polish)since he was born and we have only had the bad rashes about 4 times.

P.S. Please don't think that these rashes are your fault. I don't want you to to feel guilty that maybe you are not taking care of your twins correctly. The reason that I say this, is because, I had someone tell me (when they found out about my son's rash)that I was a bad mother, and this person made me feel terrible about myslef. She accused me of letting my son sit in s dirty diaper for hours and that was not the case at all! I just wanted to give you some encouragement if you may of felt like that or if someone said that to you as well.

I just read through all the responses and many suggest a petroleum based product. I disagree. Petroleum will sit on top of the rash and not help with problem. It may feel better for awhile, but won't help with what is causing the problem.

You may want to look into homeopathic or natural products. I have some suggestions, if you would like to contact me directly, I can help lead you in the direction that WILL work.

I see that you have gotten lots of good advice but is that stuff doesn't work then i have a suggestion. My mom watches a little boy who also gets diaper rash so bad that it bleeds. And the only thing that they have found that works it a product called monkey butt. Yes i know it sounds weird and what not but it really works and they to had tried everything over the counter and prescribed stuff. We buy it at big r but i think they even have a website and other stores like big are or farm stores may have it. Best of luck to you and if you have anymore questions about it just ask

If they are constantly getting rashes maybe it is time to look into their diets. They maybe allergic to a particular food or something. Maybe it is the diaper brand name.

Hi i agree w/ the water and paper towels no wipes and triple paste works the best. At first i bought the tube for my twins and then had to buy another one soon after. I recommend just buying the tub even though its pricier. Also hydrocortison (a layer of it) followed w/ eucirin original blended in. Make sure its the original thats thicker. My doctor recommended it and it also made wonders.

A ton of people have mentioned the possibility of allergies and other things... but no one has mentioned "teething rash" yet. My MIL warned me about it, but I had no idea until my son got it... every time he was teething (even if the teeth were still above the gumline and just working their way down) he would get a rash that sounds exactly like what you are describing. The rash would appear and no matter what I put on it to help it would just get worse and worse until some broke open and bled. I switched to the most gentle wipes (free of as much chemicals as I could) and used wet cloths sometimes when it was really bad. I talked to my pediatrician and mentioned the possibility of a teething rash and he agreed, as my son was in otherwise excellent health! He suggested that I use gentle cream (he suggested creamy Desitin, which I used, but I've heard mixed reviews on that one and there may be gentler ones) and then switch to smearing some Neosporin with pain relief on the rash when it starts to bleed to give him relief and help prevent infections. I also gave him baby Tylenol when it got really bad. We had to suffer through it quite a few times while his baby teeth came in. I am happy to report that he does NOT seem to be going through the same issues while his adult teeth are beginning to come in now(my MIL warned me it could happen a second time now, but it seems better this time). Every time it happened I questioned my choices in creams, diapers (I was mostly cloth diapering and noticed it seemed better when he was in those than when I was using disposables while out and about)... everything. But there was literally NOTHING I could do to change what was happening - just try and help him not have to suffer and make sure there were no infections.

I would let your pediatrician take a look at the rash and ask if it is possible that it is related to teething or allergies. See what he says. I had different problems with my daughter who was more prone to yeast infections but did also get some mild teething rashes - nothing like her brother had, however.

Hi , several other moms suggested triple paste . It was my savor for my son . His little bottom would bleed . I found that his problem was apple juice , once we stopped all juices and went to water it start to heal . His little bottom got so bad his ped gave me a burn cream to help .It worked but it had steroids in it . I stop right away . Triple Paste .

My daughter 14mtns as well , I tried a old fashion method giving to me .. Mylanta and corn starch made into a paste and I put it on every diaper change ( more freq) . I also let her walk diaper less for a while . But it seems to work . Hope something works for your little ones .

When my boys were in diapers we had a similar dilemma. My mother in law recommeded using corn starch instead of powder and it worked. It was a miracle.

try using lotriman or another athlete's foot cream. I know it sounds wierd but it works

Poor babies. I would make sure the wipes are rinsed in just water as the alcohol in them causes irritation and burns, also make sure that they are changed very often as urine can exacerbate the problem and BM too. I have used A&D ointment. It smells pretty medicated like, but that is the only thing that has worked on my son when he has had this problem. Keep applying it after each diaper change and before bedtime.

Lanolin from the breastfeeding aisle in Target works great overnight. I put it on at night and by morning any rash is usually significantly better.

There are different types of medicine that take care of yeast infection. My daughter had them regularly and they would give her nystantin. Unfortunately, it took them several months to switch to another type and it worked wonders! I would say, to start there. Also, A & D original is AWESOME!

If it is a yeast infection I would put the cream on right before bed and put a layer of Tripple Paste over it. Triple Paste was a miracle cresm for us. It is a little more pricey than other creams, but I bought it in a tub and it worked out great!!

Hi S., May I suggest changing the brand of diapers you are using. Sometimes a baby's skin can change and it becomes "allergic" to materials it wasnt before. Also my nephew also has this type of horrible bleeding rash and he is allergic to dairy products. And I mean ALL dairy products. My sister in law sometimes uses "udder cream" on him. Good Luck

Our 14 month old daughter has the same problem - due to antibiotic reaction. She is starting to be on the mend - here is what we are doing:

Letting her crawl/walk around with her bare bottom for a while to let the diaper area dry off.

Using water and soft paper towel or rinsed baby wipes to wipe her bottom.

A few times a day (especially after a messy diaper) we are putting her in a shallow, warm tub with the Aveno oatmeal soothing bath powder. After the bath we are blow drying her bottom with a cool hairdryer.

When we diaper her, we put a layer of Lotrimin (athletes foot cream!), then Vusion cream (costs 272.99 with insurance, ugh) then we frost her bottom like a cake with desitin.

Her bottom is still not 100% but we are getting there.

There's something more going on here. They are probably sensitive to something they're eating. Yeast infections are a tip of the iceberg, so they could have more yeast in their body. Do they have a history of ear infections, allergies, asthma or antibiotic use? Antibiotics deplete good bacteria along with the bad, and it ends up causing a vicious cycle of bad bacteria outnumbering the good then. Once that happens, yeast overgrowth occurs. You can try to eliminate something from the diet one thing at a time and see if you notice improvement - I would start with dairy, a common offender. You can also offer probiotics which could make a huge difference. I am a rep with Shaklee and could send you a book on healthy children and more information on this product. I can tell you that it's as safe as anything and even newborn babies can take it. My 2 year old now loves it and looks forward to it everyday along with her vitamin. She's one healthy kid with only one ear infection ever. I've met other kids her age who have had over 20. I also only use non-toxic cleaning products in my home, and believe it or not, that makes a big difference as well. A lot of the chemicals in leading brands are harmful to our health and especially for kids who are on the floor and put everything in their mouths. They are attributing this to the rise in allergies and asthma which has been 160% just between the years of 1980-1994. It's astonishing. Let me know if I can get you more information.

Two products for me were the only ones that worked: 1) the PURPLE Desitin and 2) Lotrimin AF. Their diapers need to be changed at least every hour -- which sounds tough with twins!!! Good luck!! Don't use wipes for urine only (urine is sterile). Oh, and one more important point: their bottoms have to be COMPLETELY dry before you put the lotion on. If it is at all damp, it seals in teh moisture and makes it WORSE!!

Have you tried a petroleum (not sure I spelled that right) jelly product like Aquaphor? My little girl had a diaper rash at one point that had broken the skin and that helped alot. We would put that on a very dry bottom after every diaper change and that protected her skin and helped it heal. We also made an effort to let her have a few minutes without her diaper a couple of times a day.... It gives their little tushies a break from all of the damp of the diaper.

My littlest guy is also 14 months, and has recently had the same problem. I tried a number of different rash ointments- Desitin, Dr. Smiths, etc. and found that the best one of all is Aveeno's baby rash ointment. It's creamy and thick, and his sore and bleeding bum cleared up in just a few hours. I was shocked! It's amazing. I had originally gotten some samples from the doctor's office, and I can't believe how effective it is. And it's super gentle, too. My little one has sensitive skin. When I switched to another kind, he got rashy again. It's good stuff!

I am so sorry you have to go through that. Is it bothering them? I have a 6mo. old little girl who hasn't had a diaper rash since we started using seventh generation diapers. I don't know if they would help you but I noticed a huge difference from the diapers they gave us in the hospital to seventh generation. They seem to be gentler on their skin. Give it a try, I am finding that sometimes the littlest things can make a difference. Good luck.

Hi S.. I would try FLANDER ointment. You can find this at cvs or walgreens target but however you have to ask the pharmacy staff for it. Its on the expensive side for a diaper rash ointment (about $9) but well worth it. My daughter had one rash ever and it was horrible also. Her dr told me about flanders honestly 24 hrs later the rash was disappearing. You dont need a script you just have to ask pharmacy for it. I hope you find something that works!

A few things I have learned over the years from peds and others...

-get rid of wipes, use a wet cloth (this worked incredibly well for all of my children--never had rashes again unless they had diarrhea)
-vaseline works as good as any rash cream to prevent a rash and to help keep an existing rash "dry"--you want to create a barrier
-feed them yogurt--never tried, but heard you can put yogurt right on affected area
-let them run naked to air out
-look at the possible chemical irritants in the diapers you are using

I have always had the most luck with A&D. Spread GENEROUSLY, watch what they are eating (some things make #1&2 acidic). When my youngest had an open sore I used a bit of neosporin then the A&D. It healed up in a couple of days. Just make sure you are spreading enough to make a good barrier layer on their bums. Sometimes I used some of the white stuff (balmex?) or butt paste - some rashes respond better to those creams, and follow up with baby powder (not too much) or corn starch (just like baking a cake :). But I always go back to the A&D. Good Luck.

This happens often with my daughter and we tried EVERYTHING - all different types of ointment, prescription and OTC, the thing that finally worked for us was Lanolin - that you buy for breastfeeding. Now when her bum starts to get irritated I just put lanolin on it 2 x per day for a day or two and it goes away.

my children are much older now, but the best diaper cream i found for all thrree was DRC. I would ask the pharmacist if they still sell this great releif product.

S. , i have two wonderful daughters who had the same issue when they where babies . There grand father one night gave my daughter a bath but not sitting her in it then he washed and dried body completely and let her air dry a bit then applied diaper with cornstarch from the store in a yellow box and he made sure she was covered in all areas so you should apply alot . My girls slept all night and the next morining it was pretty much gone. I hope this can help. You may need to repeat a few times if needed but it might help . Best of luck. J.

I had this problem with my daughter. The best thing for us was to let her run around for about 20 mins a few times a day (ESPECIALLY AFTER A BATH!) to let air get to it. It worked really well. You may have to clean up some pee spots. And the best cream that we were prescribed (ask your Dr.) was Nystatin and over the counter, use it 2 times a day then all the other times we used Butt Paste. The air works wonders!

You may not want to take the plunge, but it's possible that your boys are reacting to disposable diapers. My son was constantly raw until I switched to cloth diapers and no rashes since. There are a lot of chemicals in them that can be very irritating. At the very least, I would use washcloths to wipe them, no disposable wipes. The less chemicals you put on their raw behinds the better. Naked always works too :)

I would let them go naked a bit, especially if you have wood floors as clean up is then easy enough. I also have used a powder on the bleeding part so as to dry it up. I can't remember the name of the powder but I got it at a pharmacy and it was specifically for diaper rash. Oatmeal baths are also good. When my little one once got bad diaper rash I let her go naked, then when diapered would change her very often and would lather on the diaper rash cream, then putting on the powder on the bleeding part. I also temporarily cut back on fruit as it tends to be more acidic. Good luck.

I used natural products on my 3rd child when she was a baby and I call it the miracle cream. It is made by Arbonne and is the ABC baby diaper cream. It started working quickly and by the next diaper change had already made a difference. Leaving the diaper off and exposing the skin to air is good also.

Let them be naked during the day for about an hour at a time. Put corn starch on their butts to dry the affected areas and don't give them any acidic drinks..that only irritates the problem. Get them potty trained by putting them on their own potty as soon as thy do drink. Start on a weekend so daddy can show them what to do by example. Give them lots of praise and maybe a little cheese fish cracker for a treat. Give 2-3 for a poopoo happening. Don't forget the praise. It's vitally important.

Sounds like you have lots of great advice to try...I use wipes specifically for breastfed babies (laninsoh...or target makes one that is the same, but cheaper). They are more expensive (about $3 for 70wipes target brand) but so worth it to me. My daughter is almost 11months, and knock on wood, never had diaper rash. I also don't seal her diaper up right away...i let her "air out".

My kids had the same problem. The best advice came from the nurse during a doctor visit. She recommended Vaseline petroleum jelly. I smothered it on after each diaper change when it looked like the beginning of a rash and it took care of it after a couple of days.

A lot of good advice, but wanted to add to it. I notice my son gets diaper rash when he eats too much red sauce. I had fed him for lunch 3 days in a row pasta with marinara and his diaper rash was getting worse each day. I now only feed him red sauce once a week and give him yogurt almost every day.

My oldest daughter had the same problem. One thing was I had to only give her juice once a day and it had to be watered down half and half. Any juice was too acidic for her little bottom.

Second I had to put baby powder in her diaper every time I changed her. I made sure it didn't plume up in dusty clouds for her to breath, but it really did help her stay dry.

Then I had to make sure I changed her immediately after a bowel movement. She had toxic poopies that would make her bottom red in a second.

When she potty trained all of that cleared up.

My doctor also sent me to the store for foot fungal creme which is way cheaper than yeast medicine and it worked like a charm as long as I kept up with all the other stuff.

I had a similar problem with me daughter back in the fall. I tried everything, A&D, desitian, Rx from her doctor, let her air dry, no wipes, and nothing worked. Finally my OB, husbands grandma and my MIL recommended putting Bag Balm on. My OB said it might sound gross when you find out what it is actually for but it works miracles. OMG it worked over night! You can get it at a Animal Feed Store or I believe Walgreens may carry it. If you need more info contact me.

I experienced this with my second son. Regardless of how often I changed his diaper he always seemed to have a rash. He hated getting his diaper changed because it bleed and I'm sure the rash hurt quite a bit. After trying several different ointments, creams, and powders I finally called his doctor. He suggested Dr. Smith's diaper cream. You can find it a your local pharmacy or grocery store (I get it from Walgreens). It is a little pricy ($12.00 for a tube) but it worked wonders and within a couple of hours started to clear him up. I now swear by it! If you try it let me know if it works for you also.

Dypertex works wonders. I used to be able to find it at target.

Make sure you aren't using baby wipes to clean their butts, which causes the irritation to be worse and the bleeding to continue. We used wet paper towels (just water) and they worked very well. Whenever our son starts to get a diaper rash we use the paper towels instead of the wipes and the rash goes away very quickly. Could it be a food allergy? Did the rashes start around the time you started giving them cow's milk? That could be the issue. 3 months is a long time to go with a rash and no relief. I would even consider getting a 2nd opinion from another doctor. Good luck!

Be sure to use a diaper cream that has zinc oxide in it - I can't remember the name - but it was a very thick white creme in a tube that worked great!

I am a licensed daycare provider. I have used Lotrimin Ultra cream (used to cure athlete's foot ) in the past on my own children and the daycare children. It can be purchased over the and usually does the trick prior to getting a prescription. Maybe your prescription isnt strong enough or maybe your babies are alergic or irritated by the diaper wipes. Also they can contact yeast infection while taking antibodics too. I hope I helped. Good luck

The best thing you can do is ,expose the skin to air as much as possible.Avoid diapers as much as you can during the day.For me vaseline worked best as a barrier.I have put vaseline on everytime for diaper change,at this age I remember,don't they have that acidy poop?
I have mixed the vaseline with a little diaper rash cream, it worked for me.

Overnight Desitin was the only thing that worked for my daughter. I bought the big tub of it and I piled it on all day and night. I wiped with Huggies sensitive wipes and baby oil. The Baby oil (mineral oil) adds a little extra protection and helps the pooh come off with a little less wiping/rubbing on the skin. Because it coats the skin also I felt like it helped with the rash too. It is so hard to see your baby hurting and bleeding. I hope this helps.

CHECK FOR A FOOD ALLERGY! Both of my daughters got a bleeding diaper rash after eating pineapples and mangoes. Strawberries don't do too well either. It could be another food, but I believe it's most likely a food allergy.

A&D ointment helps heal after drying their butt very very well, even with a cool blow dryer. I would alternate with Burt's Bees baby powder and change them often. They work as a barrier to new moisture to prevent further irritation while it heals.

Hi, I am not sure if someone suggested this, but the ONLY thing that worked for my daughter was the DRC (Diaper Rash Creme) - you can get it at Walgreens. And then the Pediatrician gave me Nystatin, which I put on the 3 times a day. But once it cleared, I would still put a small coat of DRC on (for preventative measures), and then a nice butt was had! ha!! And then if it flared up again, then I would put the Nystatin on.

Good luck...I think it hurts us more then them (except for when we wipe them)!

Viva paper towels are super soft and strong. Also, tripple paste is awesome as a barrier. It's now sold over the counter, but a few years ago was behind the counter.

I have twins too and my daughters would get diapers rashes so bad they would bleed and I would just keep putting diaper rash cream on them. Most of the time when the rash was that bad it was a yeast infection and I had to get meds from the pediatricion.

hi i see that you have alot of answers so i hope that i am not repeating. when we had bad diaper rash the best thing was butt paste or destin with corn starch on top of the cream. the cstarch seems to keep the lotion on and the bottom sealed/dry enough to heal. try the corn starch. good luck.

My daughter frequently gets nasty rashes that leave scars. Make sure the area is totally dry before putting the diaper on, I sometimes blow on it and she thinks its funny. I also use a combination of desitin and neosporin (put the neosporin on first then the desitin on top). Alternating that with the yeast cream always does the trick for her. Good luck!
