Bleeding Sores on Baby's Bottom

I have a 10 month old daughter (I never had this problem with my son, who is now 3). She had a diaper rash that turned into these sores. They are not blisters (so i'm thinking there is no yeast/fungul infection). But they were bleeding, one has to be the size of a dime, maybe a little smaller. I usually used pinx sav and swore by it with my son, but it doesn't seem to work with her. I've been using desitine and aveeno baby rash cream, but nothing seems to be clearing it up. It's been about a week, they aren't bleeding anymore, but they are not getting any better. I thought an oatmeal bath may work, but i'm unsure. So is there any advise out there from you moms that have had baby girls with this prob?? I feel so bad for here and I haven't been letting her have any citrus drinks or red sauce food, b/c I'm afraid it will add more aggrevation to it. Please help if you moms out there have any hints or ideas that I can do to help cure this up a little faster. Thanks ladies..
M.

So What Happened?

Well the neosporin did clear the actual sores up.. but then the rash started to come back but bumpy.. so i did have to take her to the dr.'s (which sucks b/c I'm laid off w/ no insurance right now) and it did turn into a yeast infection. I had to get some of that special cream 3 x's a day for her bum. Thanks for all your advise.. I appreciate it. M.

You mentioned that you had stopped any citrus juice - if the baby is getting apple juice (any at all), stop that as well ans see if it helps. My dgd cannot tolerate any apple juice.

My daughter would literally shake in pain when I would try to wipe her bottom. I talked to a pharmacist and he told me to put her in a warm bath and then let her run around naked. That worked better than anything else. I finally realized she would develop this horrid rash when she drank juice, any juice, like juicey juice or orange juice. It could be the tiniest bit of juice and this would happen. She could have a bit of the cheaper flavored juices though, like Hi-C. I was also told to try the Lotrimin. Hope this helps.

My daughter would also get horrible diaper rashes that would turn ugly fast, and I swear by Triple Paste. It's a little more pricey but SO worth it! I hope you find something that works.

Oh M., I'm so sorry to hear that that happened to your baby. You might want to call your pediatrician just to see what they think. But I'd also start using Neosporin every time you change a diaper, and especially at night. That should help a lot. When my daughter got bad diaper rash, I used that and Desitin, and that cleared it right up.

Hi M. - yes I actually did have this problem with my daughter about six months ago. It was a fungal infection. The diaper rash stuff will not help it, and could possibly make it worse. The pediatrician prescribed Nystatin and another kind of cream that I had to apply four times a day. It began to clear almost immediately. None of her sores got that big in size, but the did bleed. As soon as the started splitting open and bleeding I knew I needed something stronger than what I was using....and I had bought everything you have used...Aveeno, Desitin, and Butt Paste. The prescription worked wonders. Good Luck

I can't say you should use this on open sores like that but when my daughter get a bad diaper rash I use lotrimin. Yes, it's for feet but it really works. I alternate it w/the pink salve or you can mix them together. My dr. told me to do this w/my last 2 kids and it works.

My second child (who is now 4) used to get rashes like that when he was a baby... none of the other 3 children have had this problem. We tried different products to clear it up and the only one that worked for him was a mixture of Boudreaux's Butt Paste (which we found at Target)and Hydrocortisone. I would put a little of each on the back of my hand and mix them together and then slather his bottom. It cleared up the sores in a few days. It also helped to keep the pee-pee and poop off the open sores.
As a side note, we could never figure out what caused it. Now that he is 4, his Ped thinks he might have food allergies because of skin irritations that he has developed. According to some research that I have done recently, the open sores could have been a sign of this at a young age. We are still narrowing down what the allergies are. I had no idea that allergies could show up like that!
Good luck with clearing it up. It is hard to watch your little one in that pain.

My son has been going through this problem for a year and a half, he has been hospitalzed cause it got so bad. His symptoms are lots of poop (which we think is very acidic) it turns his bottom really red, causing sores that are bleeding all the time, very upsetting, and you know we have tried everything, neopsoren, all kinds of butt creams, vasoline, baking soda baths every night, and he still has it. I was told it could be possibly food allergies. We have removed everything from his diet, dairy, all fruits, gassy vegetables, all breads, pretty much everything, and we are still very much suffereing through this ordeal. I just wish there was something to help him. Every persons response ive seen on here, seems like what my son is going through, but I have tried everything, is there anyone out there that is going through what my son has been through with nothing working???? We are going to see the allergy doctor tommorow, maybe we havent taken something away yet, so we will see. I'm telling you, as a mother going through this and missing tons of work and seeing my son shake so bad from the pain, its heart breaking. We are tired of it. I just can't belive, all of us going through this ordeal, and not one person telling us, what this problem is exactly. This is the only website, that I have found that has given me hope that my son will get through this, that he is not the only child out there. I was thinking my son was the only one with this problem, cause the doctors can't find anything. I have hope. Thanks again all, and good luck to you all.

Well I had this problem with my oldest daughter when she was a baby. I could not use baby wipes because her skin was so sensitive. I had to use baby or vey soft wash cloths and warm water to clean her. Also, with my infant daughter, I use cloths and water and a creame called sensicream. The hospital recomended it and it worked like a charm. My sister swears by beaurdaux's butt paste9it worked really well for my niece who I babysat for three years.

I highly recommend a diaper cream that this company carries.

www.healing-scents.com

She is a lady out of Illinois that makes her own all natural products out of her home. I have NEVER used a better diaper cream, and I have used a lot. I would put this on my daughter's bottom and the rash would be gone the next day.

Hi M.,
So sorry your little one has a sore bottom but this recipe for diaper rash cream was on my local playgroup page. I copied a few months ago and saved it just in case. Here it is.

THE BEST DIAPER CREAM RECIPE

The key is to not change any ingredients, it has to be these specific ones:

Aquaphor (real thick petroleum jelly) It is pricey
Original Desitin (the purple one, not the creamy in the blue bottle)
Maalox (yes, for upset stomachs)

Mix in three equal parts. I mix the Aq and Des first, then add the maalox. I usually do a little less maalox because I want it to be nice and creamy.

After a nice bath (throw a little baking soda in there) make sure his bum is completely dry and lather that on. Overnight, you will be amazed at how healed it is.

Use it after all diaper changes.

You will love it.

Actually M., according to my children's Dr all diaper rashes are a fungil or yeast infection. I just took my 15 month old to the Dr last night due to her bottom being all red and bleeding. He gave her a perscription for a Steriod and Anti-Fungal cream. He said that it would take a week or two to clear up with the meds, but 14 hours later she is much better. I would take your little on to the Dr. Best of Luck!

My son had a flash burn that bled. This came from the acid in his poo. The doctor said for me to create a barries between his bottom and wetness. I used Lansinoh Breatfeeding cream. It is a thick, tacky cream but it worked. Don't use it if your child is allergic to wool. It is a derivative. Also, let her go without a diaper as often as possible.

Hi M.,

My 19-month old son has the exact same problem this week with the raw, red and sometimes bleeding sores. Today I called his Dr.'s nurse because we've had to use warm washcloths to wipe his bottom because he cannot even tolerate the sensitive skin wipes at this point, poor baby! I've been using extra-strength Desitin but it is not helping this severe of a rash.

They called in a prescription for Bactrim. I assume it's just a lower concentration of antibiotic then Neosporin would have, although I've never used it yet.

I hoep she feels better- I know how awful it is to change a baby in such pain.

My son used to get terrible diaper rashes that also bled sometimes. His doctor always said to mix up a paste of Maalox and Aquafor. I know it sounds gross but it does usually work really well. It's a little hard to mix so the best way I found was to squirt some of the aquafor into a container and put it in the microwave for about 2-3 seconds, then add the Maalox. Mix up enough to keep on hand and just put a lid on the container. Put it on thickly every time you change her diapers. They also said don't use wipes, use a washcloth and warm water. If none of these methods work then she may have a bacterial infection and need a prescription to clear it up. I also found that he got the rashes more when he ate certain things like peaches. Best of luck to you!

My daughter has had severe diaper rash as well. I have tried a couple of things to help. I use a squirt bottle with plain water to clean her up instead of using baby wipes that seem to sting. Also I let her run around without anything on her bottom to let her air out. That works the best- she would greatly improve in a day or so. Obviously you might have some accidents, but it is definitely worth it to avoid the screaming from being so sore at diaper changes. I would also see if you notice a pattern with the food she eats and the daiper rash, since food allergies can contribute to it. Good luck!

My daughter also used to get this. It took me a while but I finally figured it out that she got it every time she drank apple juice. Nothing seemed to work, until some one told me to try an antacid liquid. The sores are usuall caused by acid in her pee. I was sceptical then shocked when it worked. Just pour a little into your hand and gently rub it on to her every time you change her. An antacid is to neutralize acid and it does work. At the same time get her checked by a doctor and watch what she eats and drinks to see if there is a source that causes this to happen.

You can use some neosporin on the area. I've done this before with my son (doctor recommended). It really helped the healing process. First I put the neosporin on (I use the gel type) and then cover the area with diaper creme.

Good luck,

My baby got really sick, and as a result, had bad diarrhea. Of course, that irritated his skin so he got horrible diaper rash.

We used Triple Paste in THICK layers and it cleared up within 2 days. It's more expensive but was totally worth the cost. His poor little booty was bright red too and it worked wonders.
