Blood Pressure Issue During Pregnancy

Okay, Mamas, have any of you had this experience? A few times now, I've been having a normal day, and my blood pressure has suddenly dropped too LOW! I get all lethargic and sweaty and feel horrible, and this morning I almost passed out. My OB/GYN has told me to keep hydrated and eat lots of salt. Well, I'm drinking fluids like crazy, and I'm now swelling up with so much salt, lol, and it's still happening. It happens at random times, so it's not when I'm getting up in the morning or standing up from sitting or anything like that. I am a SAHM with a 3 year old and I'm 36 weeks pregnant. Do any of you mamas have any suggestions for preventing this from happening again? I am also considering, if it happens more than once or twice more, requesting an induction so that I can get this baby out and return to normal. I am definitely concerned that something will happen while I am at home alone with my daughter, and I will be unable to care for myself or her, or I will somehow harm the baby.

What can I do next?

Oh girl!
I had the same problem! Mine would go up rather high, then bottom out like you described. It does make you feel awful. I ended up in the hospital at 36 weeks because it threw my potassium out of whack, which just made me feel even worse.
I drank lots of Gatorade. I really don't like it, but it worked. I drank the strawberry-orange am flavor. My doctor also put me on modified bed rest and wouldn't let me be alone except to shower. He was afraid I'd blackout and hit my head or something.
I was induced at 38 weeks 1 day after my husband rather forcefully told my doctor "we" were miserable.
I wish you the best of luck.

This is scary & I agree w/all of the other posts too. Another option, if you don't like Gatorade, is a thing called Rehydrate. It is drink from Advocare (www.advocare.com) and it the equivalent of Gatorade but better for you. I keep it on hand to use for my kids when their legs are hurting from growing pains. Anyway, you need to pursue something & I can't believe your dr wouldn't take this more seriously. Will be looking for an update on you! Hope you make it til full term!!

Have they checked you for diabetes? This could have something to do with it........It sounds to me that you need to be eating small meals about 6 times a day with a couple of snacks thrown in..............if you are eating BIG meals 3 times a day, this might be your problem.

I can't believe that eating a lot of salt is good for you either.......especially while you are pregnant......I think I would ask for another opinion or get him to send you to someone who deals with blood pressure more than he does.........this up and down is very bad for you and for the baby.......

Also, try keeping a journal of everything you do and eat for a day.....and when it happens..........see if you can find a pattern........

Take care and good luck.....and congrats on the new one.....

I second the Gatorade. You have to keep your electrolytes up as it sounds more like your blood sugar and not blood pressure. Definitely talk to your doctor!

Why are doctors so off with their sugestions sometimes? Drink the water but no salt, please. You can see yourself it was bad advice. You have about 3-4 more weeks of carrying this baby. My sugestion is to go raw as much as possible, this helps with the needed alkaline issue in your body and fluid retention and also the BP issue. This means small breakfast, snack mid-morning of carrots or fruit, lite lunch such as salad and water crackers and another fresh veggie salad for dinner with anything you want in it. Baked potato with little butter and lite sour cream, etc. No sweetened juices and you can add lemon oe lime to your water. Fat Free pudding, jello, dates or apricots for snacks are good.
These things stablize BS and BP for you and your baby. Go lite or no dairy for now and almond milk, unsweetened is best. A few almonds or walnuts are also a good snack.
Good LUck!

I teach hot yoga and staying hydrated is a concern-especially this summer and the extra heat outside! Salt has a bad reputation, but good salt is actually very good for us. I am talking about a sea salt with minerals - potassium and magnesium - electrolytes. These minerals help the body process and use the water that we take in. I drink a mixture of 1 liter water, juice of lime/lemon, and 1/2 teaspoon salt - again the good kind not the processed table salt. You can go to whole foods and ask somebody there and they will help you find good salt with minerals. If you find this mixture scary then at least go to the drug store and get the emergency C packs. They have electrolytes and that is what your body needs! Good Luck!!

I would try talking to your OB/GYN again, because that doesn't seem right. I often have low blood pressure issues, including during pregnancy, but it hasn't made me feel as bad as you describe. For me it was just headaches and dizzy / woozy feelings. If it IS just low blood pressure there may be medication they can give you. The doctors gave me something to raise my blood pressure during labor ... I have no idea what it was, because while I normally ask a lot of questions about any medicine I take, I was a bit busy with other things then! :-) Also, is there any way you can get some extra help for the next few weeks? Maybe a high school girl to help with the three year old in the afternoon, or even just another mom friend? Resting more and keeping your feet elevated (to help with blood flow) may make you feel better.

Are you sure this is BP related, is sounds like it might be a Blood sugar issue as well? Have you ever had Blood Sugar Issues? I would call your DR and have them check everything out. Hope you are feeling better soon!
