Blue Lips When Running and Crying

My almost 2 yr old daughter gets slightly blue lips when she runs around and when she cries hard. It is subtle, but they do turn blue. Is this anything to be concerned about? When she was born the pediatrician heard a heart 'click' and we saw the pediatric cardiologist who did an EKG and ultrasound of the heart. That was normal. At 1 yr she was seen again for the same tests at the cardiologists - again normal. THey want to see her at 3 yrs because the heart noise is still noticeable. I wonder if the blue lips could have to do with that? Could it be normal? As a child, I was very prone to blue lips when I was cold, but not when I was running around I don't think.
Thanks!

So What Happened?

My husband thinks I'm paranoid, that her lips arent blue. It's very subtle, so up for interpretation. Her heart has been checked out. I guess I was just looking to see if anyone else has a child prone to blue lips. And if this can be normal? I appreciate the response!

Hello!
I recommend to definitely get this checked out, it could be a type of anemia, which can cause cyanosis (blue coloring), and would be something you need to treat if it's the case. It can be a type of anemia that can be corrected w diet or supplements or it could be more serious & then it would be helpful for you to know anyway, it is not normal. (I've worked in an ICU for over 8 years & am in nursing school myself.) Good luck & I hope it's something easily corrected!

Blue anything adds up to lack of oxygen. Have you looked into asthma possibly?? My son has VERY slight asthma and just has some medicine for when he has colds that agrivate it. I'd get her in to the dr. to get some breathing tests done- just to put your mind at ease at least :)

My daughter has a heart defect and her lips would turn grayish. We knew she'd be cyanotic though. You've done the right thing taking her to get this checked out but I'm surprised they haven't given you a reason yet. Are you taking her to the same doctor? I would recommend children's hospital. They have been amazing for us.

My other daughter doesn't have a heart condition but would still get blue when she'd get really upset. So, if it's something like that I wouldn't worry but shortness of breath and blue lips I'd definitely be concerned.

Good observation, mom! Blue lips are often a sign of low oxygenation. Could be heart related, might not be. It's normal that oxygen levels drop with crying and running, but the blue lips aren't quite as normal. Since you have a heart "click" background, it is important to tell your doctor. I'm guessing they will move up your appointment.

You should definitely get her checked out. You've mentioned two potentially important symptoms, the heart click and blue lips. There could be a cardiac or pulmonary problem and it would be far better to know now, and possibly monitor or treat her, rather than risk a serious event.

Congenital heart problems can lead to death if they are not diagnosed, and half or more of kids with congenital heart problems go undiagnosed. If you go get her checked out, the worst that could happen is that you are out some number of dollars or time - a very small price to pay for assurance that she is not going to have a serious problem.

Hope all goes well for you!!

Blue lips (and often fingernail beds) is called "cyanosis," or if someone has blue lips they're "cyanotic." It's caused by a lack of oxygen. I would definitely discuss it with your doctor. Get photos if you can, because she's probably not going to be running around in the doctor's office, right?

Good luck!

Hi Melissa, My son now 30 years old used to have blue lips. He has a mild heart murmur and I always thought that was the reason. His lips would turn blue also when he was in the swimming pool. I guess like you it was when he was cold. His heart murmur has never cause him any problems. Other than taking an antibiotic before having any major dental work done. They would listen to his heart and say well he has a slight murmur but he should grow out of it. Well, he never did. So, I guess I am writing to tell you my little one had blue lips too and not to worry.
