Book Recommendations - Keller, TX

I am in need of reading material. Everytime I go to a bookstore I get so overwhelmed and could easily walk out spending $100. I finished the Twilight series and loved it. What are your favorite authors, series or books? My problem is that there are so many choices I don't know what to choose. I don't want to spend the money and then find out it's a boring book or a bad author.

What can I do next?

I loved Twilight also. Several friends who also enjoyed it recommended the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. The first is called Outlander. I am on the second one right now. These are really thick books that you can really get into, but take a long time to read. I love something that lasts! Great romance, adventure, and a little history (which I never would have thought I'd like).

I agree. Hit the Library! Give one of these a try:

Persian Pickle Club by Sandra Dallas
One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd
by Jim Fergus
Kite Runnr by Khaled Hosseini
The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls
The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Ann Monk
The Red Tent by Anita Diamant

I am not familiar with the Twilight series, but to me all these titles were easy and captivating reads.

Hee hee... as a student midwife most of what I read is very VERY serious stuff...and I am allergic to *smut novels* :o) my term for romance novels..BUT (Ok I am admitting this in public) I have gotten completely HOOKED on JR Wards Black Dagger Brotherhood vampire romance/action novels! They have the CHEESIEST titles EVER starting with Dark Lover, Lover Eternal etc...they all start with "Lover_____" but they are a great sexy fun action read if you just want to escape life for a little while and read something fun thats not a heavy read of literature. They can be hard to find because they are so wildly popular but there are 7 books the newest just came out in April but they are so FUN!!

I always go to the library. If the book you are looking for is checked out, you can request a hold and it never takes too long to get an email saying that the book is ready for check out. You can go to the computers set up around the library and view the bestsellers lists for both fiction and nonfiction books, if you don't have a book in mind. I like Jodi Picoult novels. Some books I've read recently by various authors are Hold Tight-mystery(awesome), Same Kind of Different As Me, I Love You, Beth Cooper-funny, No Time For Goodbye-mystery, What is the What-true story about A Lost Boy now living in USA, The Double Bind. Other books I've enjoyed in the past are Drowning Ruth, The Kite Runner, The Sex Lives of Cannibals(very funny travel novel), The Nanny Diaries, Sweet Potato Queens, John Grisham novels. Have fun reading!!

I agree "My Sister's Keeper" by Jodi Picoult is probably my favorite book. I've enjoyed all of her books. My other favs are the Myron Bolitar series by Harlan Coben and anything else he's written, James Patterson, Patricia Cornwell, Nicholas Sparks, Jane Green, and I'm sure the list could go on and on as I'm an avid reader, but I don't think you can go wrong with these authors.

I like Beth Moore, any type of self-help type book, Love and Logic parenting books, Christian books-parenting and self help type books.

In addition, I like Gavin De Becker (Gift of Fear), Joyce Meyer books, Tim Madigan- I'm Proud of You- My Friendship with Mr. Rogers, Chocolate for a Woman's Soul by Kay allenbaugh.

There is a discount bookstore in Fort Worth off Granbury Road. It is the Fort Worth Libraries bookstore. It is like Half Price books, but on a smaller scale. They also have DVD's, CD's and children's books. I've found they are better quality due to being library books as opposed to half price books where some are worn more or damaged some. I have found great deals there. I usually buy used books, unless I can't find it, then I buy new or if buying it for a gift. I also shop at Half Price books, they do give out coupons every once in a while and I take advantage of those times. Also go there day after Christmas and you get a lot of goodies and coupons/bag, and a chance to win $100 gift card there.

Yeh, I know I can easily spend $50-$60 when I go to Half Price books or the Library Bookstore. You might want to join a book club and see if anyone is willing to swap books or let you borrow them. Garage sales you can usually find older books. Have you tried checking the books out from the library. I know they don't always have the latest books out: however if you are willing to wait and doing some research it will save you money in the long run.

If you're a Christian reader I would highly recommend the Karen Kingsbury books. She has several single books and also series ones. LOVE them all!

I haven't read Twilight, so can't comment on it's similarity to other series, but I read "Eat, Pray, Love" by Elizabeth Gilbert last year and it has become one of my all-time favorites!

Try looking at Oprah's book club site...

First of all, I would also try the library while you're in search of new authors. It's an easy and affordable way to check out authors. Libraries also often have lists of authors and who readers find comparable. I know Keller's Library is under construction, so you might check out another local library (You usually don't need to be a resident of that city to enjoy privledges). Our list includes over 20 local libraries, along with contact info and links:

By the way, the Keller library is having a magician this afternoon at 2:30 if your son is interested. It's at the Senior Center, which I believe is where they moved many of the books during the renovation, so you can browse while you're there.

In terms of specific authors, it would be nice to know what else you've enjoyed besides Twilight, or what genre you're into. I personally like suspence, criminal drama, some light humor included, some light romance included... but not romance novels.

Authors I've enjoyed include Janet Evanovich, Sue Grafton, Lisa Scotoline, Lisa Gardner, John Grisham, James Patterson, etc.

Good luck!
