My son will be doing his first book report in the next few weeks. Does anyone have any good book suggestions? He will say he doesn't like to read, but once he gets started, he's hooked. Thank you!
The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster
The White Mountains by John Christopher (there are 2 other books in the trilogy)
The Black Cauldron by Lloyd Alexander (lots of books in this series)
We like the Peter and the Starcatchers series. That's also the title of the first book. They are written by Dave Barry, and he will love them. The story is similar to Peter Pan, only a grown up version. It's not too difficult a read either.
The Outsiders by SE Hinton. It was my favourite book in grade six!
Our children's librarian recommended the site www.guysread.com . I haven't had a chance to take a close look at it, but I think there is a section with boys' books.
Can you give an example of books he likes, that are at his level?
Maybe going to a library and asking a librarian for suggestions would be useful. Or Amazon.com will give suggestions based on age and likes, as well as Goodreads.com
A couple that my daughter read recently that had boys as main characters: "Elephant Run", "Captain Nobody"
I have to second guysread.com. I also think the Graveyard books are pretty good. Kids also seem to really like the "Bone" books. They are a little below 6th grade I think, but still funny and good. Jerry Spinelli is a great author for boys to read; pretty much anything of his will have them hooked. I would look at what he likes and then get similar ones. Amazon will tell you what others who read this are reading as well.

How about Call of the Wild? I forget who the author is, but that might be a good one fore a 6th grade boy.
Or, My Side of the Mountain. Again, can't remember the author, but you cn google the titles and fid them pretty easily.

6th grade is such a good age for books! I read a lot then. If he is interested in horse stories: The Black Stallion (and there are more in a series), by Walter Farley. If he is interested in dog stories: Big Red (and there are more in a series), by Jim Kjelgaard. If he is interested in science and intrigue: A Wrinkle in Time (and there are three in this series), by Madeleine L'engle. If he is interested in mysteries solved by an intelligent boy: the Encyclopedia Brown series (many), by Donald Sobol. Enjoy!
My kids like the Heroes of Olympus series. Starts out with The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan.

You could also have him ask his teacher if she has a recommended or required reading list, or check with your local Children's librarian to get their recommendations, they may also have it on their website.
The author that wrote The Hunger Games series has another called Gregor the Overlander. It's aimed for middle school kids. I will admit, it does have some violence in them.
Is he into Disney at all? My daughter is hooked on the Kingdom Keeper series.
I'm not sure of his interests or reading level but my child, 8, and granted a daughter has read and is in the midst of reading the following books for book reports:
The Call of the Wild - Jack London
The Jungle Book - Rudyard Kipling
Oliver Twist - Charles Dickens
Dracula - Bram Stoker
Since we don't know his reading level it's hard to answer. I would ask his teacher 1) what level he is at and 2) recommendations for boys in that level. Once you know the level you can also ask the school or public librarian for recommendations of what's "hot" right now :)
At that age my son liked sci fi, fantasy, humor and historical/military fiction.
That's a great age to start reading the Harry Potter series.
