Hi! I would love any recommendations for my 11 yr old boy and 9 yr old girl that is age appropraite regarding their changing bodies and puberty. My husband has talked to my son about sex but inadvertantly left out the part about the changes his body is about to go through. I did the best I could discussing it with him and I am pretty sure I did a good job and made him feel comfortable enough to come to his dad or I with any questions. I also had a talk with my daughter about changes she may go through and girls having their period and from her I got "eww is that really true?" lol SO I thought if I could get a book for each of them that I can read first it may help. THANKS!

What can I do next?

I can help with the girl, American Girl. Since I am at work I can't tell you the exact titles. One is the care and keeping of you but there is another one. Great mom aren't I?

Boys, well I kept waiting for their dad to talk to them and since he didn't I just addressed the issues as they came up.

Whether you are christian or not, the bible book stores have really good age appropriate books for both boys and girls. They have them divided by ages like 3-4yo, 5-8 yo, 9-12yo, 12-15yo, 16+, etc. Something like that, and they have them for both boys and girls. They are a little pricey, I think $12.95 each? But you can get the names and then look on Amazon too. =) Good luck!!!

Hi SS, Well, my daughter loved "Are You There God, It's Me, Margaret" when she was 8 or 9.

Not specifically about changing bodies, but ALL my kids loved the "Chicken Soup" series. I guess Chicken Soup For The Preteen Soul would be about right for your fella.

:)

I highly recommend the American Girl Care & Keeping of You book. My daughter who is 8 got it at the end of this last school year and while she has known what a menstrual cycle is for years she wasn't sure about tampons until she read the book. This book also teaches about proper hygiene habits and how emotional changes are also part of the whole aspect that is puberty. My daughter loves the book and nothing is above her head so to speak and we have constant conversations about what is in it.

My daughter is 9, and will be 10 this year. 5th Grade.
I got her, the American Girl book series. Its good. She likes it.
I also talk to her about it. Don't just let your girl read this book... it is also meant to be talked about WITH mom.
It is a very good book.

AND in school, per this grade level/ per my daughter's school, they will have a "class" (boys & girls separately), about how their body will/is changing etc. With parental permission forms sent home etc.

Some 9 year old girls, get their periods already.
They have body odor.
Some have boobs already.

For boys, I don't know specific books. But just do a search on Amazon... because then you can also read the reviews of the books.

Oh and, also... make sure to explain to a daughter, about how all these bodily changes, also means hormone changes, AND it will affect their moods. Boys too. My friend said her son gets the male version of moodiness- ie: he gets surly. At certain times.

Definitely get the American Girl book!! I got it for my 10 year old last year and it's exactly what she needs to know at this point in time, no more, no less. Sorry I can't help with the boys - I have 2 girls!
