Hi Again! I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions for longer, more chapter-like books for my 6 yr old son. His shelf is loaded with tons of books, but he says they are boring. He is just beginning to read, so it's not like he's reading on his own. He enjoys Dr. Seuss books, which tend to be a bit longer, until we've read them a handful of times. I didn't know if there might be a series of books for this age that are more about substance than pictures. He may find these boring at first, but I would like to at least introduce them soon. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Junie B., Henry and Mudge, Biscuit, and you can do a search for AR books by grade level if you google it.
Try Magic Tree House books sold at Wal-Mart. They have some grade level books on the shelf, too. Captain Underpants and Goosebumps might keep his interest, also.
Try Henry and Mudge. It's about a boy and his dog Mudge. Also Frog and Toad is a good one. These are both popular chaper books with 1st and 2nd grade reades who are ready for chapter books. Magic Tree Hous is good too but a little beyond him.
**Sorry, just saw that he is not reading on his own. Keep this in mind for next year. Picture books are hard because many books are really hard. I googled picture book levels and got a few webistes. On these website you can type in the title of a book to see the reading level. For example, the Polar Express is a 3rd grade reading level. Sorry it is so confusing. :)
Check with the library, the children's section usually has a librarian who willing to assist in choosing books.
Also look at websites for libraries in other cities/states.

my 6 yr old loves Arthur series by Marc Brown, all Hank the Cowdog books,magic schoolbus series & look at cindy Rylands work. She has a couple series that my kids like also.
the Judy Blume books called Fudge, SuperFudge are pretty good.
When I was working at LaPetite Child Care Center in OKC I would go to the Library on South Walker and work on stuff for my CDA certification. The Children's Librarian was a wealth of knowledge. She knew just about every book by name and topic and could tell me which books were better for what skills the kids had.
You have had some awesome suggestions here too. I always go to the Library first. I want to support that in my community so it doesn't end up going away in the future because it's not needed.
The Junie B. Jones series is a favorite of my boy's. They all started reading them when they were five and my eight year old still enjoys re-reading them! Ready Freddy is another favorite. Good luck!
Many of the boys in my first grade class enjoying reading from the Junie B. Jones series. It is about a girl, but her adventures are truly funny to the young.
Magic Treehouse are a favorite at our house. About 100 pages, I read them as bedtime stories over a couple of nights.
I don't know if they still make them, but have you tried the choose your own adventure books?
My 6 year old daughter has just discovered the joy of chapter books. She loves the Magic Tree House series, which is a very long series, so there are plenty of books to go through. :) We get them from the library. She reads them herself or out loud to me. I also saw that the Cam Jansen series is recommended for beginning readers. We got the first one of that series as well and found it age appropriate too. My daughter also loves comic book style things. We have a few TinTin books and she'll try to read those to herself or have us read them to her. I hope that helps. If he is bored with what he has, don't hesitate to get him some more challenging things.
my son loves Diary of a Wimpy Kid series! the characters are cartoon illistrations. he started reading it when he was 7 and he is almost 9 now and just got the 4th book. that was the first series he REALLY got into and since then he's read 3 Harry Potters alone, just finished Hugo Cabret, and is starting The Mysterious Benedict Society which is by a Little Rock Author and it's a New York Times Bestseller! Some ideas for when he's older, but I'd start out with the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. He would just crack up and it was the real start to him reading! hope this helps...oh also...the Ready Freddy series was fun when he was younger!
Your son might enjoy The Boxcar Children series of books. I started reading them at about age 9 so they would definately be a family time kind of book. They are mystery books full of adventure and good values. They are kind of like Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys for younger kids.
