Bottle & Solids Strike

My 8 month old busy boy stopped taking his bedtime 8pm bottle from his Dad on our trip to see the grandparents this month. It's the only bottle of formula he receives during the day. Also, he suffered jetlag and I nursed him more than normal at night (usually he feeds at 3 a.m. only) so we wouldn't wake relatives or neighbors in our hotel, but once the jetlag finished he still refuses the bottle and solids from the jar and is waking in the night for breastfeeding. He has both sets of his front teeth (top and bottom) and will gum some bread crust, rice cake w/cream cheese, soft pasta. I'm nervous about giving him finger foods and him choking. We got home this week. I'm wondering how to get him back to the bottle for the bedtime routine and what finger foods I can give him now that he has teeth. I steamed an apple today and cut it in french fry size slices. I was worried he was going to choke. Help!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, I appreciate all the advice. So we decided to play it cool. We'd keep offering him solids in a jar, my husband always likes to stick one spoon of it in his mouth, but then won't force it. Sometimes the baby will take it. We're also offering finger foods like these:
Protein
Egg Yolk soft, hard-boiled, scrambled
Firm or extra firm Tofu
Chew in my mouth 1st to begin digestion: Chicken or pork cut into short shredded pieces.
Cream cheese, la Vache Qui Rire, cottage cheese on bread crust, pancake or rice cake

Steamed Veggies
Carrots, squash, broccoli, cauliflower, peas avocado, sweet potatoes

Fruit
Blueberries
Grapes (Quartered)
Watermelon in small chunks
Peaches
Plums
Pear
Banana
Mango

i am still nursing my 13 month old and he would get down to just that one 3am feeding and then regress back to 3 a night, usually after traveling. i would always be all worried that he'd get this schedule as a habit again (at this point i am NOT a fan of night nursing), but then he'd always drop them on his own, one at a time. and, just in the last 2 weeks he has, for the most part, dropped all feedings and has been sleeping through the night!! so your son will probably go back to his regular schedule on his own.

also, he may be teething or getting ready to crawl (if he hasn't already). that on top of a disrupted schedule can cause a shift in behavior. when my son was teething he often stops eating very much. also, right before a big change, such as crawling or walking, babies tend to regress a bit, it's two steps forward and one step back kind of thing. it seems whenever they gain a bit more independence due to a new ability, they get a little scared and huddle in close to mama.

as for food, i would suggest avoiding feeding much bread to a baby, it's really not so good for them. rice cakes are fine because the rice is just puffed, but in bread and wheat pasta, the grain is broken down into a substance that isn't so healthy for kiddos (or adults, but our bodies are bigger and can handle it better). whole foods you can feed (as finger food or you feed on a fork) avocado, banana, pear, pineapple, steamed veggies such as broccoli, cauliflower, peas, sweet potatoes. you can feed him meats, but it's best to chew it in your mouth first to begin digestion, otherwise babies can't break it down enough. my babe LOVED peaches and plums over the summer, cut up grapes, blueberries. just go to the produce section of the groccery or the farmer's market and buy what looks good.

hope this helps!

Your son does not need a night time bottle if you are nursing him. Have you tried solids you are eating?? He does not need teeth for adult solids. His jaw strength is tremendous and will mash up the soft foods you are offering. offer him your breakfast, lunch and dinner foods as long as you are not offering any nuts, raw honey and foods that could choke him, carrot coins, hotdogs,,,,
His sleeping patterns have been disrupted. If he is greater than 12 pounds he does not need to nurse durng the night. Have you tried breast milk or formula in a cup?
Try setting limits as you are the mom.

This sounds like a situation that will just take time and patience. The trip upset his routine, and he may never go back to exactly what the routine was before. (That could be just a part of the development stages, that would normally have been occuring anyway, or directly due to the trip.)

I can only suggest that you keep on trying to return to the routine you want him on, and don't panic about him not getting back to it immediately. He'll probably surprise you one day by starting to eat again on his own, but he won't go hungry or lose nutrition as long as you are offering him the food on a regular basis.
