My 12 month old daughter has been having problems with her bowel movements for the past 2-3 weeks. At first it was like constipation, but now she is having regular movements, but still seems like it is painful for her. They are not hard and not loose either. I have tried prunes, applesauce, more juice and water, and after discussing it with her dr., we have been using mineral oil as well. She just started drinking milk after her birthday, and thats when the problems started. I have cut back the amount of milk she drinks and given her other forms of calcium, but nothing seems to be working. I was wondering if anyone else has had problems like this, and what worked for them. Help!!

What can I do next?

my son had issues like this when we switched to reg milk and i would half his milk with water and it worked really well! you might also try soy milk or lactose free milk and both have all the same nutrients and calcium so you wont have to supplement! hope you find something that works soon i know how frustrating it can be!

My niece had similiar problems and had to go completely off of any dairy (milk, cheese, yogurt etc...). Her dr was able to give her a medicine that she had to take daily to help with the pain. She had to drink lactose free milk until recently. Every six months to a year, they would try to reintroduce milk based products. When she was 3 this past summer, she was finally able to have milk products without problems. Sometimes it is the milk enzyme that causes problems. Good Luck!!!

Dont give her apple juice or apple sauce or Prunes for bowle probs.. you will make it worse in the long run... more so on the apples!!!

TO help make things come out with less pain you may end up haveing to give her some minnaral oil at first.. IT IS nasty.. but if worst come to worst...

try some LONG play time baths.... but also PEARS.. that is the ticket!!!

pears and Pear juice!!!

on the juice.. first start off 1 part juice to 2 parts water.. IF not strong enough up it a bit.... but NOT whole Juice.....

Gerber makes it.. but Beach nut is cheaper!! hahahah

Try to keep it on hand!! ok.... in the big container!!

But apple is not always the best.... My oldest is almost 16.. He got sooo messed up his first dr was a quack.. had us give him apple juice like crazy.. enemas... Poor thing is soo messed up we go to see a G I dr next week all the pills he has been taking dont help now and we need a specilist.. we have been to chicago and in and out of hospitals cuz of that first dr... and it started with consipation and apple juice!!!!

so GO WITH PEAR!!!

good luck!! It will come out oK!!!

Hi A.!.MY son had the same problem. MY friends at work told me I was giving him all the wrong stuff to eat and drink.Apple juice, grape juice cause constipation, as well as rice cereal and crackers, and juices with lots of sugar, bananas. So this is what I do When he gets backed up.He gets only 100% fruit juice, with part water. and I give him all the P foods. peas, pears, plums.Raisins help as well.Your child may be lactose intolerant.and mineral oil is way to harsh for there system. There are glyerin suppositories for little kids that help get the hard stuff out at the end of the "road".work at both ends.oh yea apples with the skin good for constipation. apple juice, apple sauce cause it. I didnt know that either I thought apples anyway worked.since I changed that all is much better. good luck!

My son is 15 mths old and we've been having the same issues for quite a few months as well. Started when he began the whole milk. At first I think that was the issue, however now we've come to the conclusion that he is holding it in cause he doesn't like to have his diaper changed now cause he wants to play and busy doing other things. I asked our dr about this and she said to push the apple juice. He has to have loose bowels so that he can't hold it in. This issue can lead to a behavioral issue and be rough once potty training time comes. I don't know if this will help you out much but I can relate. It's tough to see your child in pain when they need to go to the bathroom. Apple juice does help, however I'll have to push more with my son. Having your child eat more fiber should help too. Good luck!

We've had bowel issues with my first son since he was 7 or 8 months old that started out the same way. He was constipated and had a sickness where we had to take a rectal temperature and ever since then has thought that actually having a bowel movement is what hurts and holding it in actually helps him go. It is now totally psychological with him. We've tried the prune juice (he caught on to that though and would no longer drink anything with it in it) and upping his fiber. I really have to be vigilant with what he eats. I would check if your child is lactose intolerant or even allergic to milk. I have been given the tips of pear juice (which he will drink), pears (he doesn't like the texture), apple cider (he does like). I've been told they work but haven't gotten a chance to try them.

My daughter is lactose intolerant. They 'say' that kids that young don't usually have it and if so, they outgrow it, but I don't find that to be the case. (My whole family is lactose intolerant too.) Cow's milk has so many more hormones and it's a lot harder for them to digest as opposed to formula. I'd try Silk Soy milk. Get the purple bottle because it's fortified with extra vitamins for kids. The doctors are kind of against soy because it doesn't have all of the fat that whole milk does but Emme has grown and gained weight just fine and is ahead in all of her cognitive development. It has helped her tremendously with her bowel issues. (I think I responded to your other post- Emme had such bad hemorrhoids that she almost had to have surgery and it was simply because she needed soy.)

Hope this helps!

My daughter is 18mos, she had serious constipation problems after we started milk. After about a month though she evened out. If his stools aren't hard it seems strange to do all the softening steps... some kids have trouble controlling their anal sphincter (they squeeze shut when they should relax open) and that can cause them lots of discomfort and it can cause constipation because they're not passing when they should. Ella does fine with milk now. If you think its milk related, try soy... great calcium and less lactose issues. Good luck!

My 3 year old has this problem too. I went to the Health Food Store over off of 240 and Penn and they have some chewable fiber pills for kids. It says kids and adults over 2 to take 2, but i give my daughter 1 a day and it has definately made a difference! If she doesnt have her fiber pill, she's back to being constipated right away.

I had the same problem with my son. We had to use soy milk for a couple of months and then went back to regular milk and it was fine.

Our 2 yr old has had the same problem...it got to the point where she knows its going to hurt so she has learned to hold it in. Our dr. has had us put her on Miralax (which you can get over the counter) we put 1/2 capful in her water everyday. It has seemed to work but if we miss a couple of days its the same old problem. We have also switched to 1% Acidopholus milk and she can only have one cup a day. I don't like the idea of her needing Miralax but our Dr. swears that there are no lasting side effects and that his own daughter has been on it for years. Hope things get better for you:)

My second daughter had the same issue. We went from using mineral oil to "go lightly" everyday sometimes twice a day. Then all of a sudden it went away. It did take some time though.

Hi A.,

I wouldn't give her mineral oil, I used it before and my doctor said that it was not a good idea, not for me! So imagine on a baby! It is really bad for your body.
I always had that problem with me and one of my daughters, the best that i could find is, skim milk instead of whole, they al have calcium the same, so unless she is skinny, skim milk will help her. Otherwise, mix whole with water or give her half the milk and then water. or first the water....
100% fruit juice, not apple (apples in some ways cause constipation like apple sauce but the juice or skin can help a little but not too much) so go with mango, pear, tomato, ask your doctor about activia yoghurt, they taste great and work! Nothing that seems harmfull for a baby either, they also make cheese with the same cultures that helps, but ask your Doc. first just in case.
Always remember the B.R.A.T. diet and never give her those ingredients (Banana, Rice, Apple sauce, Toast) those are things that constipate! Nothing realated either, like crackers, pasta, or cereals that contains them like rice crispies or Special K.
Try giving her 4 servings of fruit and/or youghurt a day spread with the meals. Make sure she gets some of this with every meal, it will help push the food better. Always give her juice or youghurt with every meal and water!
I wouldn't switch to soy milk unless you find that she is lactose intolerant, soy has been linked to several illnesses, it is not the angel soy we used to think of.
I am not sure what to believe, but here is a link of what is not good about soy:
http://www.tropicaltraditions.com/whole_soy_story.htm
Just in case, I wouldn't give it to a baby, I am very natural and like organic and safe products specially for children.
If your Doctor says that it is OK to try Activia, I would try it because it works!
Best of luck and hope you can help your little one soon.

Try apple cider. Not the juice but the cider. My daughter was like that too. Gave her some apple cider and wahla.

I also have my daughter on organic whole milk. That has really helped her system.
