I am currently nursing my 6 month old son and have been since he was born, I went back to work at 2 mos and pump when i am at work. I have one lazy breast that doesn produce as much milk as my other one does. I dont get to pump as much as i should because it is very busy at my job and cant always get away. i work Mon- Fri and nurse in the morning lunch and when we are home after 6. while at work i pump like 2-3 times. What can i do to increase my milk?

What can I do next?

most definatly have your baby nurse more on that side to increase the milk production all babies have a favorite side. I have noticed that helped me a lot when I had to pump. Also they have a tea called Mothers milk made by traditional Medicinals its orgainic and you can get it at any foodstore that has health food section. it helps increase milk production. It worked for me. I so know it can be incredibly frustrating. keep up the good work dont loose hope. good luck.

Drink more water, and maybe some lactation tea (Mother's Milk Tea works well).
Other than that, maybe try to have your son nurse as much as possible while you're with him to let your body know that you need to start producing more.
If its just the one breast that you want to increase, when you're nursing your son only have him nurse from the "lazy" side for a week, meanwhile keep pumping the fuller breast at each feeding so your supply doesn't go down in that one.
Your son's sucking on the lazy breast will really kick it into gear. I had to do the same thing and it worked! :)
Good luck, and way to go with breastfeeding! :)

I agree with the K.B. The other thing you can do to increase supply is pump on that one breast for a few minutes. You may not get much milk for a while, but stimulating the breast with the pump, even for a few minutes will make a difference.
I too have one side that produces more milk than the other because when baby was born he would only latch on the one side. So now I alternate breasts and try to the use the other breast more to even them out a little bit. Eventually my body will figure it out!
Good luck!!

i pumped for six weeks and never made more than an ounce for the entire day. this time i drank mothers milk tea. and i made an ounce per pump!! super exciting but when i tried to nurse my daughter she sucked so hard it really hurt. i gave up pretty quickly. good luck. btw i took a prescription med that was suppose to increase my milk supply...it actually ended up decreasing it! i have switched doctors since. be careful what meds you take. LOTS of water...second go i barely found time to eat or drink...with two its much harder.

Great answers so far! I ditto the fenugrek and pumping the lazy breast after she eats.

I have a 5 1/2 month old (3rd child) and work 6 a.m-11 a.m M-F. I also have one breast which produces less than the other (which is pretty normal and most people have a dominant breast). My girl actually sleeps in in the morning until 9, so to avoid pumping at work (which is soooo not fun or easy to do) I get up early, take a shower (easier than cold start pumping) and pump both breasts before going to work and then feed her when I get home. You produce more milk in the morning. You could try pumping one breast before you feed your babe in the morning, then continue with your normal pumping routine that you have, it will give him more milk during the day and "demand" more from your breasts and increase your supply. I also recommend letting him feed as often as he wants in the evenings and on weekends and going straight breast (no bottles) for him all weekend. His eating will tell your body how much to produce.

One extra caveat - with my first two I worked from home and didn't need to pump as often, but when I did I found it got much more difficult to pump after 6 months. Your supply will naturally drop as other foods are introduced to their diets and it will get harder to pump. But, as foods became more of a staple, my kids dropped to only needing around 5 nursings a day and only the morning and evening ones were long, the midday feedings became shorter and shorter. So if you are able to straight nurse 4 times a day (morning, lunch, home from work and before bed) don't fret too much what little extra you pump at work is probably enough. And by the way, kudos to you for keeping up with pumping so long, I know it is not easy!

Quit your job.....HAHAHAHa. Just Kiddin! Seriously though, it sounds like you are nursing pretty regularly, pumping regularly, and creating enough milk for each situation. You would have to increase pumping and nursing in order to create more milk and it sounds like you don't have the time to do that. Have you tried your local Herbalist. There are herbs that can help increase breast milk I believe. Natural and safe too. I know of a tea called "Mothers Milk"....check it out! Best wishes to you and yours.

Feed and pump on the lazy side first, until you even out.

Fenugreek can help - capsules and tea. Also, have your son nurse first on the weaker side - the stronger suction will encourage that breast to produce more. Contact a lactation consultant if you feel you need more help. They can be VERY helpful.

Hi! I have the same problem on both sides! What I found out is that if I only feed my daughter from one side throughout the night, I have 2-4 oz. on the other side the next morning. You can also do this during the daytime, obviously. Good luck!

Call La Leche and check with them on the most recent protocol, but I nursed, worked and pumped for the first year with all of my kids. It's not easy, but you can do it. I got the flu at 6 months with my daughter and my production almost stopped. La Leche suggested I take a Fenugreek supplement (I think it's the primary ingredient in the tea others have suggested). It brought my milk production back up and allowed me to nurse for another 6 months. Good luck!

My right boob was lazy too and produced half of the amount of the left. I took Fenugreek, blessed thistle and Mother's milk tea. All of which i ordered at Vitacost. I pumped at work the same as your schedule and am now weening at 13 months.

Have you tried tandem pumping? When you breastfeed at night and on the weekend feed on one side and pump on the other. Or pump immediately after feeding. Tandem pumping can be tricky but it does work to help increase your production, or pumping the opposite side after feeding can work too.

Here is a great site for info:

Hello V.,

Fenugreek supplements are EXCELLENT! You have to take 9 - 12 pills per day to see an increase. I saw an increase in my milk supply within 48 hours. I get mine from GNC but you may be able to get them at any health food store.

Be Blessed!
