I am currently nursing my 9 month old and early morning today while we were still in bed I noticed it hurt to nurse her. Like she was latched on wrong or something, I broke the latch she was on correctly and it still hurt. When I got up I notciced under the nipple is a little irritated looking(its dry and a little bumpy red) The baby and I have no white patches but as the day progressed my nipples are getting more painful to the slightess touch(like from my clothing and just holding baby) Does this sound like thrush to you? Sorry for the TMI, I tried to google pictures! TIA

What can I do next?

I battled with thrush repeatedly with my last...It was hell...sooooo sorry if that's what it is!! My son hardly ever had any white patches...occasionally a few if I looked hard enough...but it felt like you described when he nursed. I eventually ended up using probiotics, nystatin (sp?), and gentian violet...it FINALLY went away...if it is thrush...be sure to treat both of you. Ugh...the thought still makes me shudder.

If it is thrush, nursing won't help. You'll need to treat it.

Try some different nursing positions and give it a day or two. Might also check in with any breastfeeding resources you have (lactation consultant, La Leche League). If it's thrush, things will only become more clear as will the need to go to the doctor. The pain is awful! Neither my baby or I never had any visible signs of anything, but good lord it hurt. Nystatin prescription and Dr Jack Newman's ointment (get prescribed and pick up from compounding pharmacy) are what fixed it for me.

I had this with my youngest. Nystatin worked, but we were both on it. Get to the doctor asap...it only gets worse without treatment. It felt like a million papercuts! I don't know if any of the natural remedies work or not, but it would be worth a try until you can get to the doctor. Up your probiotics too..if you both are showing signs externally, more than likely you have it going on internally as well.

Could be, but I thought I had thrush, went to my primary doc 2x and LLL, treated it w/everything for thrush: vinegar wash in shower, yeast oc med, nystatin, diflucan, gentian violet... turned out my dermatologist figured out it was something else, not thrush at all. Once we figured that out it went away quickly. So, the moral of the story is, don't try to treat it yourself, go to the doc early so it doesn't keep coming back. First call your pediatrician to get nystatin for the baby just in case, that way you don't give it back & forth. If you need more info, feel free to email.

Usually it's a sharp shooting pain that goes deep into the breast.

Try at home methods include gentian violet, vinegar washes of the nipples, etc - - check out www.kellymom.com
