In reply to the beer post, it has to be a dark, yeasty beer. My pediatrician said Blue Moon is good. I used fenugreek and yes, you'll smell like syrup!
I have heard great things about fenugreek helping mom produce more milk. So I couldn't wait to run out to the store. However all the fenugreek they had contain organic alcohol. It said to take with hot water to dissolve. I'm still unsure. Is it okay to take organic alcohol when breast feeding?

Z.,
First of all good on you for breastfeeding! I am currently breastfeeding and take More Milk Plus. It comes in both capsule and liquid form but I would say take the capsule as the liquid does taste pretty bad. I found that when I took it in the pill form and also drank Mother's Milk Tea my milk supply was really good.
You can also take fenugreek in combination with blessed thistle. Best thing is get advice from your local health store. Better yet (Also from Dori W.)) nurse more frequently, pump after baby has fed even if you don't get any milk it will stimulate your breasts to make more milk. I've read and also heard at La Leche League meeting that a bowl a day of oatmeal will also help.
A great website for breastfeeding info is www.kellymom.com and llli.org (La Leche League for great questions and answers on their forums)
Good luck and if you have any questions of need some more info please email.
Hi Z., another way to produce more milk for you little one is to get alfalfa sprouts and use them on your sandwiches with whole grain bread or use them when you eat salads as well. Eat whole grains as well such as oats for breakfast and each corn as well. Drink plenty of water and to help with this when you have a snack between feeds have a sandwich with molases and this will make you want to drink more water and its also got good nurtients in it as well. We did this when we had our kids and my wife had plenty of milk for them. I'm not sure if you drink coffee and if you do drink decafe as it will keep the fluids in your body and you won't be going to the toilet as often as when you drink normal coffee. I wish you all the best. Regards Ed
Really the best thing to help you produce more milk is to nurse often, keep baby close, wear your baby, pump after nursing, eat well, drink enough.
Is there a reason you think you need to make more milk? I don't know how old your baby is but the vast majority of babies are very adept at getting mom to make just what they need. If you are going by what you pump, please know that what you pump and what baby gets are 2 very different things. Baby is far better at getting milk and your body responds far better to baby.
I see you are in Aledo. did you go to the sunflower shoppe off camp bowie in Fort Worth? They are AMAZING!! And have so many natural remedies. this is where I got my fenugreek pills and mother's milk tea when I was BF. I also went about a year ago looking for something to help me get a more restful sleep I went in wanting sam-e, but the experienced sales staff shared great information with me aobut side effects, othe options, etc.
good luck!
I am currently nursing my third child and am taking fenugreek. I love it! I have never been able to make enough milk to nurse my first two children fulltime. But with the help of fenugreek I am doing it this time! When my daughter hit her 6 week growth spurt I upped my fenugreek and had plenty of milk within 24 hours. Mine is just a capsule that I bought at the vitamin shop. It does smell like syrup but i haven't noticed that I do. and I certainly think it is worth it!
Alcohol is perfectly safe while breastfeeding. And i have also heard that drinking beer will increase your milk supply.!
Yep, I never saw fenugreek that you have ot add water to, either. I just had a straight pill.
The stuff smells like syrup. You might a little, too. Fenugreek is the "natural flavors" in artificial maple syrup.
You can also take blessed thistle. Check out the la lech league website for info.
As I heard someone say once, whoever came up with the idea that you can't drink while nursing, probably worked for a formula company. Again, check out the la leche website for more info, but like Tedsmommy pointed out, beer is not an uncommon recomendation for nursing moms. Neither is a glass of red wine. If you drink something harder every once in a while wait a while before nursing or pumping. You don't even have to "pump and dump." Breast milk is constantly recycling. It takes longer for the alcohol to metabolize out of your bloodstream than it does for it to get out of the milk. So I always heard that if mom's not tipsy, baby will be fine. Heavy drinking is another story, though, and is definately unsafe for baby.
I used the Mother's Milk Tea - but it IS fenugreek.....it's the same as the pills but only in tea form. Obviously they add stuff to the pill that is probably not in the tea, but I would imagine that it would not hurt you.....
Keep shopping around for it. I've never heard of dissolving it in hot water. The one I have is Nature's Way brand Fenugreek seed capsules certified 610mg. Works great but yes you will smell like maple syrup. Also mine does say anything about organic alcohol. Good luck!
My fenugreek is also a pill form, but my doctor stressed that I should not take it for more than 2 weeks so I just take it every now and then. Another way to increase your milk is to pump after feeding or to have a beer in the evening (doc actually recommended this, but only one)!
I'm sure the amount of alcohol is so small, it won't matter. Plus if you dissolve it in hot water, the alcohol will cook out. If you're still concerned, I know that the company that makes My Brest Friend nursing pillows also makes a fenugreek supplement - I think it's pills.
You also might try Milkmaid Tea by Earth Mama Angel Baby. You can find it at Sprouts or at my natural baby store, Babies Bottoms and More (.com)

Not sure on that one. The fenugreek I had was in pill form and you just swallowed it.
I too heard about limiting the fenugreek and only took it sporadically (pill form). Don't know about any other ppl posting but I smelled strange after taking fenugreek. Can't say I cared much for it. If I wanted to smell like maple syrup, I'd stick a pancake in my pocket and call it a day. LOL. :-)
IMHO I think I had better results with Mother's Milk tea. Maybe that would be an alternative for you. ???
