Breast Pain - Wauconda,IL

Hi ladies,
I've been breastfeeding for a little over 11 months now, and all of a sudden yesterday the bottom of my right breast became very sore. It felt almost like I was engorged, but I am pretty sure I wasn't. This morning I woke up with a lot more soreness there. I can barely stand to touch that area it hurts so much. I fed my son from that breast in the middle of the night too, so i know its not engorged, and it doesn't feel like I have much milk in there at all right now. Has anyone had anything like that happen? I don't know which doctor to call about this (general or ob or someone else?), if I need to call at all. I tried reaching a breastfeeding consultant, hoping they will call me back today, but who knows...
I really doubt that this could be related, since I was able to feed without any issues for 11 months already, but the breast that hurts, on the bottom (pretty much where it hurts), I had a lump removed a few years ago. It just doesn't seem likely, but thought I'd put it out there for more info.
Any info/help would be very much appreciated!

What can I do next?

I had the same exact symptoms and it was a plugged milk duct. I would think your general practitioner should be able to confirm this and I would definitely contact him/her given your medical history just in case. For me I just made sure to nurse/pump as much as possible on the affected breast in order to dislodge the plug. Apply warm compresses and massage will help too. If you don't get the plug out it could lead to mastitis and you could then need antibiotics. My milk supply did go down in the affected breast but eventually returned once I recovered. Good luck and good job for being able to nurse this long.

Hey Mama!
Sorry to hear of your troubles...Chances are you have a clogged milk duct or a galactocele (a duct gets clogged and the sinus backs up with milk becomming engorged and sore; it's usually benign and will resolve without issue). Keep an eye on any fever that might develop, as this might be an indication of mastitis and will need to be treated immediately with antibiotics. If you do begin running a fever, have your OB paged immediately to start treatment ASAP.
Make sure you keep feeding from the sore side to keep the milk draining, this might help resolve a clogged duct. You can also try warm compresses on the sore area several times/day. Get as much rest as possible (I know how tricky that is), stay well hydrated and wear a good supportive bra. It's ok to take some tylenol if the pain is intense, but again, watch out that it's not hiding a fever.
I know how scary this stuff can be, especially having a history of lump removal. I have been dealing with a similar issue for the past several months on top of being a full time mom to a toddler and being 9 months pregnant. Try not to worry too much and never be afraid to have your doc paged if you feel something is wrong. Better safe than sorry.
Happy holidays and let me know if you have any more questions.

Sounds like a plugged duct or possibly mastitis. If it is a plugged duct all you can do is try to get it out. Warm shower, put soap or oil on your skin and gently try to squeeze it out. Plus nurse from that side first....it doesn't hurt the baby and it will help you get it out.

If it is more serious it could be mastitis and in that case, you are going to be feeling alot worse before you feel better. Fever, soooooo tired, aching...kinda like the flu. If that is it, you will probably need an antibiotic. I called my midwife...so your ob would probably be the best choice.
