I'm pregnant and due with my first baby August 1. I'm planning on breastfeeding, but would like to buy a breast pump for when I return to work. With so many different pumps on the market, I'm a little overwhelmed on which one to buy. I would appreciate any feedback that I can obtain.

What can I do next?

I have had a good experience with my Medela Pump In Style Advanced. It's one of the more expensive models, but I like that it is both manual, battery operated, and you can plug it in. You can also double pump or single pump and the pump itself can be carried alone (without a bunch of other things so it's super portable for work pumping). Good luck!

I'd recommend the Medela Pump in Style. I used it for over a year and found it to be very reliable. I bought it online, new for about $200. I also borrowed a friend's Pump in Style for a few months and she had used it for two of her kids. It was very reliable and never broke down. It's a double, electric pump, which in my opinion, is the only way to go. If you're going to be pumping a lot, it's essential to have a double electric(you can choose to pump only one breast at a time if you want). The carrying case is nice and unobtrusive and you get everything you need in one package. I highly recommend it.

Someone else suggested waiting to buy a pump--good advice. I rented one for a month, borrowed a friend's and when she needed it back, I bought my own. I think it's good to wait to see if breastfeeding works and you stick with it rather than spending the money and then not using it. Also, I rented a hospital grade pump for $25 a month and I haven't found many WIC offices that have good pumps for you to borrow.

Congratulations A.. I've used the Medela Pump in Style for both my girls and I would highly recommend it. It comes in it's own bag that doesn't look like a breast pump and you can pump both breasts at the same time very quickly.

Hi A.
Congrats on your new baby, and that you've decided to breastfeed! I will only recommend the Medela Pump in Style. I used it for all 3 of my kids while I worked full time and exculsively breastfed my kids. The Medela worked great - but at about $300, it is a little expensive....however, I purchased mine right at the hospital I delivered at (Central DuPage) and insurance covered the cost of at least part of it.....I can't remeber, but I think it was about half covered by insurance.
I would call your insurance and the hospital that you're delivering at for details.
Good luck.

Congrats!! Just so you know you can borrow a pump from your local WIC office or rent one from the hospital that you deliver at. Most update their models as they become available. You may want to call ahead about this too since some have waiting lists. Hope that helps a bit!

Hello,

Congrats....I used the Medela as well. Someone gave one to me, but you should ask where you are delivering. You may be able to rent one to make sure you like it.

Pump in style, in my opinion, is the best personal pump you can buy. You can rent hospital grade ones from the hospital, but they are like 30.00 a week. I pumped for my son from the time he was 10 weeks to 14 months and used a PIS the whole time. I loved it!

Hi A.,
I am due August 11, and didn't really pump much with my daughter. This time I think I will more, and just did some research into the same thing. I just bought a Medela Pump in Style. From everything I read, they are the most effecient and also discreet. I didn't get an Advance model, but those look like they have a lot of helpful features. They are pricey, but from what I read, I think it will be worth it. Good luck!

A.:

Your best investment if you are buying is either the Purely Yours by Ameda or the Pump N Style by Medela.

Some mother's prefer to rent as the rental pumps are better pumps and if something goes wrong they can return them and get another one.

Both companies have website you can look at.

I definitely recommend the Medela Pump In Style. No need to go any more expensive on a pump. However, I don't recommend using hand pumps...just go straight to electric. I've used the Avent Isis hand pump and now I only use Medela electric. It works so much better and faster. Most importantly, you want to pump WHILE you are nursing for best results due to let down effected by your nursing baby. My biggest mistake was pumping in between feedings and I couldn't always experience let-down which resulted in lower amounts of milk that would I could express. Very frustrating. Good luck and congratulations!

Hi A.,

Congrats!!!

I purchased the Medela PIS Advanced. If you do a search on the web there are a couple of websites that you can email for current prices (Medela don't allow dealers to quote anything less than full retail). I purchased mine for $228 free shipping, no tax back in February of this year. It arrived next day!
I love mine - it gets the job done in about 10-15 mins both sides, and is very discreet. I usually keep mine at the office, and have a Medela Harmony pump to keep at home.
You could also try to see if your insurance carrier would cover some of the costs - they just ask for a Dr.s note stating that it is a medical necessity for you to have a pump....

Good luck,
A.

I like the Medela pump in style. Get one you can pump both breats at once. Most hosptials use the Medela brand, so any kit you use will be compatable.

Congratulations on your upcomming birth... I would recommend the Medela Pump in Style. I used it for my first child, which I exclusively pumped and then I used it for my second child, just to have some milk handy. I loved it, it was fast and did the job. Especially since you are planning to go back to work, the double cups are great. I did have to go back to work for a few months with my first child and it worked out fine. I was able to pump on my breaks and the bag fits everything you may need. It also comes with a battery pack, which is great for when you go out and are not sure that you will find an outlet. I bought mine at the hospital, which was priced a few more $ then at the store. I am looking to find someone who would like to purchase my used one.
Good luck.

Hello, I bought the avent hand held pump and the medela battery/plug in. Since I had a lot of milk, the avent was the one I always used at work. There was no noise and I was done within 10 or 15 minutes with both breasts. All I had to do was put the pump on and hold down the lever, my milk just flowed out quickly. There was no stoping and releasing. I have purchased a few of the avent breast pumps for other expectant friends, and they say it was the best pump ever. At such a reasonable price under $60, I would only recommend this pump. Best of Luck!

I don't know if you bought a pump already. But I used the Medela Pump and Style Advance. I love it and it has the let down feature that mimics my baby sucking on my breast. Not sure if you are ever in the Aurora area but they sell them at the Rush Copley Hospital on Ogden Ave. for no tax!!! Much cheaper than anywhere I've seen. Give them a call and ask for the lactation department. Good luck!

Congratulations! I tried three different pumps, a rented Medela electric, a smaller Evenflo battery operated pump and an Avent Isis manual. The Isis was by far the best for me, and the battery operated one was the next best. I thought the Medela was a complete waste of time and money, but I know other moms who love this brand/style. It's really a matter of what you're going to be comfortable with because if you can't relax while you are pumping you may have a harder time with let down. I liked the manual because it was very quiet and I was in control of speed and pressure. Hope that helps a little bit.

I know this may sound stupid, but you may want to wait until after you have the baby to buy the pump. I rented a hospital grade pump from a lactation consultant. Everything is new to you, the tubes, cups and stuff like that, but you hook them up to the actual pump that is the hospital grade. That way, you can find out if breast feeding is right for you and your baby before you invest hundreds of dollars into a pump that you may not like or use.

My hospital had a lactation consultant there and also a list of consultants that you could call. It was really helpful and I am soooo glad I did that before I bought my own. My son wouldn't nurse, so I was continually pumping and my body couldnt keep up and stopped producing milk. I did everything the doctor and the consultant said to do and it just didn't work. So, I am really glad I rented.

I hope it all works out good for you, but I really did find the consultant a big help.

I've had excellent luck with the Avent Isis IQ. I have the single pump, the Uno. It also comes in a dual model, the Duo. You can set the pump to your baby's unique sucking rhythm, which I find very useful. It's a combo manual/electric, so if you had to pump manually once or twice you could. It's easy to clean, very small, and is very fast. I can pump an entire feeding at work in under 20 minutes. It's a lot less expensive than the others, too. Only around $150 instead of twice that. The mechanism is very comfortable, contrary to what I've heard about some of the other electric pumps.
