I have the Medela Pump in Style which is an electric double pump. Great carrying case for travel or pumping at work. Its nearly $300, but well worth the investment!
Hi,I want to get a breast pump and not really sure which one to get.I know that I want to get a Medela because I had used it in the hospital for my last child and it was great. The problem I am facing is which one do I get? Which one is good? I know I dont want a manual,so any advice on which one is better would be great. I think there are 2 different kind of electric and it the description doesnt really make things that clear. thanks so much!

I have the medela "swing" and I really like it, you can plug it in or use batteries. It is only ment for occasional pumping (1-2 times a week). If you are planning on pumping everyday then definatly get a double pump.
We tested the Pump In Style (borrowed a friend's pump) and liked it, but ended up buying an Avent Isis Duo since we own all Avent bottles. I liked that this felt gentler on my breast b/c it had massaging cup inserts, and I was pumping more milk. Definetly go for a double electronic pump if you can afford to, but check with your health insurance company to verify whether they will cover all or a portion of one. A friend recently got her Medela Freestyle at a large discount this way, and the only catch was that she had to purchase it at a medical supply company, submit the bill, and be reimbursed.
I also used the Medela Swing pump. You can only pump one side at a time, which can take about 10-20 minutes longer total since you have to do each side, so if you work full time and have to pump numerous times a day, I would go with the Swing. Its cheaper and smaller. I personally would even use it at work (I work part time so would only have to pump once while I was gone) and no one knew I was carrying in a huge breast pump bag.
I'm not sure what pump you used in the hospital, but hospital grade and what you buy in the store are two different animals. If the one in the hospital was the size of a large tool box, don't expect the same effect as the one you buy in the store which comes in a large lunchbox-type bag. Depending on your body, you may be perfectly happy with the lunch box. But, I had to rent a hospital-grade pump from Walgreens to make the time of pumping worthwhile because I got so little out of the lunchbox type, which took twice as long to get half as much.
For what it's worth!
I had the Medela "Pump in Style" double electric pump and it worked fine for me. I know lots of moms who also had the same type. It is like a bag you can carry around. I think the next step up is the Medela Symphony. I know when I started pumping when I went back to work, I initially had trouble getting a lot of milk pumped, and the lactation consultant recommended a higher grade pump like the Symphony. But like I said, the pump in style worked fine for me. Good luck!
Like the prior posters, I had the Medela Pump in Style. It was great!
I used the Medela pump-in-style advanced through 2 babies and really liked it. It worked wonderfully for both kids. I also know 3 other nursing moms who used the pump-in-style and liked it. The double pump is excellent as a working mom because you can adjust the suction and it has an excellent let down. As a tip, I figured out with the second daughter that I could go hands-free by using 2 rubber bands looped together. I circled the breast shield part and hooked the ends over my bra cup clip. It was wonderful and let me actually get some computer work done while pumping.
On a side note. My second daughter was premature so when I was at the hospital with her I would use their professional grade Medela and at home I would use mine. I didn't find that great a difference between the two pumps.
Good luck! A.
I wanted the Medela In-Style, but couldn't justify the cost. I got a Lansinoh double pump instead for like half the price. I pump and feed exclusively and my son is now 7 1/2 months old. I started out pumping like 6 times a day and have slowly gone down to 3 times a day... and the thing is still giong strong! I love it - and the money I saved on it!
I have loved Medela for the 6 years I've had their products. I had the pump in style for my first two kids and loved it. I decided to upgrade to the Freestyle with my last one, and it was the best decision. It's a lot smaller (fits in the palms of my hands) and does a better job. I work, so the smaller pump was more discreet and I could easily throw it in my purse. It also did a great job at pumping...10 minutes each time and I was done. It also ran off of a rechargeable battery, so I could literally pump anywhere instead of being stuck by an outlet. I think getting the right pump makes such a huge difference in breastfeeding. So many people say that they can't justify the cost, but with these pumps I was able to easily exclusively breastfeed for 12 months (could have gone longer if I had wanted to), and the savings in formula on that alone makes up the cost over and over again. Plus, I was able to be comfortable and not worry about leaving the house because I always had a ton of milk in the freezer. Just my thoughts...
