Has anyone ever had a breast reduction? I am approved by ins to get one and have the date set but now I am getting nervous. I have been told of the risks and stuff by the dr and I know it is a long recovery I'm just wondering what was your experience?

What can I do next?

It will be 3 years in March since I had mine and it was the best thing I ever did too! My only regret is not going smaller. Since having the reduction, I am able to be more active and have even done a few triathlons and a 5k. Before the reduction I hadn't run in 22 years (since required in high school)! As far as the recovery...I think I only had the pain meds the next day and then maybe a few ibuprofen. I don't remember it being too bad. Good luck and enjoy!!

I had one done about 15 years ago and it was the best thing I ever did! I went from a 36DD to a 34 B/C (one pound off each side) and I looked like I'd lost 15 pounds!

Your recovery will depend on the type of surgery you will have done, how much is coming off, etc. My best advice is to make sure you get a couple of "reshaping" bras (no underwires!) - not the "sports bras" and in two cup sizes - the size you are going for and one larger. If you are having a good cosmetic surgeon do the surgery, he/she should have recommendations for you. I say this because I had the reshaping bras, and a friend of mine used the sports bras...mine had a good "normal" shape and hers were kinda' flat. :) She also had an in-office surgery done and mine was a three-day hospital stay after a 4-hour surgery. One other thing, I occasionally had sharp pains from the nerves reconnecting...takes your breath away for a second, but that was it and they happened for years after the surgery. If you have any other questions, just let me know...and good luck -- you'll love being able to shop for clothes in the same store. I used to have to shop in Lane Bryant for my tops and Express for my pants! And a one-piece swimsuit was impossible!

I had one breast removed a year and a half ago because of cancer and the other breast was reduced six months later to try to match the "implanted" side.

I haven't had any problems with it and the recovery on that side was just a soreness for a week or two. I went from a C to a B on that side. If you are very large, I suppose that means more cutting of tissue and probably more discomfort. Good luck with that. I am sure any pain will be worth the reduction.

I had one done about 6 years ago It is so worth it. I was only sore for the first couple of days and then it was hard to keep me still. I would do it again if I had to. I had my done by Dr james Foley.

I had one about 6 years ago and I'd do it again if I could. It was the best decision I ever made. The pain was not bad at all. The worst part was a day or 2 after the surgery when you go in to get the drainage tubes removed. That hurt, but it was over in a few seconds. I felt so much better physically and mentally after I had this done. I had this done before I had my baby and the doctor said I had a 50/50 chance of being able to breastfeed after the surgery. I had a little girl 6 months ago and I was able to breastfeed for about 6 weeks and then she wanted more milk than I could supply. It maybe didn't have anything to do with the surgery, but who knows. I say go for it. I know 3 other people who have had this done and all of them would do it again in a heartbeat!! Good luck!

I don't have personal experience, but my best friend growing up had it done (as well as both of her sisters). I barely recognized her when I saw her afterwards - She looked great, more relaxed & comfortable in her skin than I had ever seen her. Her husband still adored her & her life was better from the way she was treated to pain levels to clothes shopping. All the other responses put together, pretty much. She (and her sisters) expressed their only regret as having waited as long as they did.

I had one over 10 years ago, also by Dr. James Foley. I went from a FF cup size to a C. It was one of the best things I ever did for myself. The recovery was relatively smooth, only a little discomfort. But the results were amazing.

You won't regret it. Trust your doctor and believe me, when you wake up you're going to be amazed. No more shoulder pain. No more headaches. No more special order ugly bras.

The only problem I ever encountered was that once I had my kids, I was not able to breastfeed. This is not experienced by all women but I imagine it was because I lost so much breast tissue.

Good Luck! You're going to be so happy you did it.

My sister had one due to the problems they caused to her back. She had a roller coaster of emotions after the surgery and told me she wished she hadn't had it done. I'm not being mean in saying I'm glad she had it, because she is so much healthier and people look her in the eyes now and not at her cleavage. She has a great shape now. She has a large-boned structure and manages to keep her weight at a healthy number and still has an attractive upper half, just not out-of-proportion.

My sister went from a II to a D. (Which to me seems like a very big D.) While she wishes that she would have gone smaller, she is so relieved of pain. Her surgery was not without incident. She had a pucker form on one of her breasts and had to have a second surgery to correct it. She had a hard time dealing with the scars - thought that her husband wouldn't be attracted to her any longer...so not the case. She also had a lot of bruising, which I think is normal, but I am not 100%.
Good luck!

Hi A. -
I, also had one almost 12 years ago. I am 36, now. It was the best thing I have ever done! I, actually, had it scheduled for a summer during college, but then I chickened out (was scared) and waiting unti lI was about to be married. I only wish my Mom would of had it done, too. I dont' really remember anything bad about it. You will be so happy! Good luck.

I have not had one yet, but I will be in a year or two. We are adopting this year, and after nursing my boys for over a year each, I want to induce lactation for our new baby too. When she is older and weaned, I will begin looking into a reduction.

Two of my cousins, one aunt, and a couple friends have had a reduction and all have had great experiences, and recommend it.

I had one done about 11 years ago and it was the best thing I've ever done for myself! I went from a DD down to a full C. No problems or complications whatsover. No regrets for me...only wish that I had done it when I was younger. :-)
