upsetting foods differ from baby to baby, but I found that peppers and dairy products upset my son's tummy and gave him gas when he was younger.

I found that when i was breastfeeding that Garlic, onions, and ground beef did not agree with my daughters little tummie. Every time I would eat them she would get terrible gas. But I found that the Baby Mylecon drops are a LIFESAVER!!!!!!!!!!! They are safe for even newborns. You might have to call you pediatrician for the correct dosage though.

Hi, S..
Cauliflower, beans, broccoli, and onions are bad news bears for nursing babies. I've also heard that caffeine can pass through breast milk and cause gas.
We ordered in Chinese food the 2nd day after bringing our firstborn home from the hospital. Noone told me to beware ANY foods while nursing - so we found out the hard way what broccoli and onions will do when they pass into a newborn's digestive system. It was not fun!

Our pediatrician said that eventually their systems will mature to a point that they can tolerate pretty much anything....and we've found that to be true.
Hope that helps!

There are lots of foods that can cause problems but the main one is dairy products, milk, ice cream, butter, anything with cows milk or made from cows milk. The only way to be sure is to cut it out completely which is very hard to do and it takes up to 3 weeks for it to be out of your system completely. Even then it could be something else. There is a great website for breastfeeding questions and it's here: http://www.kellymom.com/babyconcerns/gassybaby.html (I went ahead and looked up gass for you and this is what came up) Another great website I use is called pregnancy.org it has a breastfeeding forum on there that is a lifesaver for me. If you to to community and then bulletin boards you will see it. I hope this helps :) GL to you.

I praise your decision to breastfeed your new baby. It is a big committment, but one that will benefit your child more than you realize now. I breastfed three children, the youngest for 36 months. I learned early on that any foods that give you gas, will give your baby gas. Some of the worst for me were: Onions, garlic, broccoli, cabbage and beans. I also learned that caffeine kept the babies awake. You learn by trial and error, but I hope this helps. Just to add: My youngest child has been my healthiest yet, breastfeeding her the longest. She has only ever had one ear infection and has only been sick a few days in her life. She is now 14 years old. Good Luck S.. I am here if you need me. Keep up the good work.

For my baby girl it was brocolli and peppers that gave her gas while I was breastfeeding... She was predictably fussy within 2 feedings after I consumed those veggies...

There are a lot of foods that can be upsetting to a baby's tummy and cause gasiness. My little girl is almost 4 months old, and we have had a lot of trouble with this. Some of the biggest offenders are milk (and other dairy product like cheeses), caffeine, and broccoli. However, alot of times the gas doesn't have anything to do with what you are eating! If you are switching from one breast to another too quickly, your baby is likely getting too much high lactose foremilk (lactose causes gas). Trying nursing as long as you can on one breast before switching to the other or only nursing on one side during a feeding. As a last resort, we also got some over the counter gas-relief medicine that we gave on occasssion called simethicone. you can get it over the counter.

Hope this helps!

I am a new mom too and also breastfeeding. I have found that garlic does it for my little guy. However I have heard that onions, or even chinese can do it. Not sure if with the chinese it is the spice? One lady in the breastfeeding support group at Finley said the chinese. The meetings at Finley are Tuesdays at 1:30 on the 2nd Floor in the Delhi Medical Center (connected to Finley) I always have luck with them!

I tried breast feeding my son but that didnt work I ended up buying the Doctors Browns bottles and they cut down on my sons upset stomach and kept him from spitting up so much. Pumping might be the better choice to help if your Child is really having problems and I wish you the best.

It all depends on your baby. You really won't know until you try to eat them and then notice her reaction to them. It is a common misconception that you can't eat all the foods you want while breastfeeding. You can eat anything you want. When you notice she/he is having issues with it, then try to avoid that food. Usually it ends up being green veggies like brocolli, or anything that would make any normal human being have gas! :) Just enjoy and try to keep in tune with your son/daughter and how they feel. Normally, newborns don't like garlic, but my daughter does fine with it. Little Tummies is a big help for baby's gas.

S.,
I stayed away from foods that made me gassy and spicy foods. Different babies can tolerate different things. If you ever need help with breastfeeding or have questions, call MilkWorks. They are an amazing lactation support. You can call and ask them anything, they are really knowledgable and helpful. Good luck

Tomatoes, brocolli and dairy products are the three main sources of gas in breastfed babies that my pediatrician mentioned. The gerber baby gas drops are awesome for relieving gas....I have used up 2 bottles....and my daughter makes funny faces when she tastes them!

I agree with Caroline....breastfeeding is wonderful! I have nursed 4 kids now and am currently nursing my 4th. I nursed my third for 20 months and HAD to wean because my 2nd child was going to have surgery and I was going to be away for 10 days. Anyway, my 3rd child, who is now 3 has NEVER needed antibiotics. I don't think breastfeeding protects from everything but it sure does help!!! As for the gas.....Chocolate and veggies seem to be the big ones. Caffeine has never bothered my kids. Actually food has never bothered them either...I'm just lucky ;o)

Breastfed both kids, one for 8 months and one for 2 years because of her own food allergies. I could not eat broccoli with either of them, or refried beans, saurakraut, peanuts made my daughter sick and milk products made both very fussy. They both have milk allergies now. Anything spicy (Mexican food) would upset them for at least one feeding, maybe even two.
And alcohol of anykind even if it was just a small sip would make them both gassy.
Hope this helps

For me, the foods that really gave my babies gas were broccoli and cabbage...the cabbage was the worst! Not only did they get fussy and irritable, but they stunk to high heaven! Hahaha!
