Hello
I was wondering if anyone who had breast implants had any trouble breast feeding or was told they would not be able to breastfeed?

My mother had breast implants when I was 6 years old, and when I was 18, she breast-fed my little sister without any problems.

Tanya,
I had implants about 6 years ago, my son is 17 months old right now and I am still nursing him. I have not ever heard of any one having any problems due to their implants. I will tell you though, that nursing can sometimes be very hard and frustrating if the baby is having a hard time latching on. Stay determined, if you really want to do this and you have the milk supply, stick with it. But at the same time, if you are not able to continue, dont feel bad. I was only able to nurse my daughter for a short time. I have had three kids, and all three were nursed, but I had totally different experiences with all three. Good luck and keep your head held high.

I was told over and over that there was a possibility that I would not be able to breastfeed should I get pregnant (I've had implants since 9/07). I signed all kinds of paperwork and on almost every form it said this. In addition, it was mentioned numerous times in the information pamphlets I was given and on the internet when I researched the surgery. So check with your doctor but don't be disappointed if you're unable to breastfeed with implants. Best of luck to you!

I've had 2 good friends bf successfully after implants so yes, it can be done. I also had a friend bf after breast reduction surgery with good success. The only way to know for sure is to do it. I think some Drs (not all, but many) are not the best resources when it comes to breastfeeding. Everyone is different and the effects cannot be predicted some times. Here are some links to consider:

I don't have any personal experience with this, however have a friend who had implants just prior to getting pregnant. According to the plastic surgeon, it was safe, and actually desirable to have implants before breastfeeding to achieve a more natural look. She did breastfeed her children, no problem, and still looks great, too, three pregnancies later...good luck!

You need to call YOUR doctor and ask him/her if you can breastfeed, or if there might be problems. Definitely check your local "La Leche" league (it means milk) to see if someone can provide breast milk. Simply stated, it's provided by another mother who believes breast milk is best for infants. Most areas have them; you can check in the phone book or google it online.

This is definately something you need to discuss with your doctor!! It seems like the risk of silicone leaking would be dangerous for baby.

I had breast implants about a yr before I had my son. I did not do well with breast feeding. The nurse said that my son seemed to hold his mouth differently, but I dont know what the reason was. It just didnt work out well for me so I gave up, and ended up putting him on formula.
As far as medical reasons, I dont think there should be a problem with it from what I have heard. Maybe I just had bad luck

Hi Tanya,

I have not had implants but was told if you plan on breastfeeding in the future there is a certain way the surgeon can put the implant in to be able to still breastfeed. If you had the surgery before talking with your surgeon about breastfeeding in the future, then maybe give him a call and ask if he put them in you in the way you can still breastfeed.

I just know that you still can if it's done a certain way but that's about all I know about it..... : )

Good luck to you and congrats on your new baby! : )

Hi Tanya,

I had implants put in after nursing my 1st baby for 8 months. I had no problem nursing her. After the implants I struggled with my second and third babies. I think it is much harder to nurse with implants. My surgeon said I would be able to nurse - and he was right, but not for as long, and the babies had to work much harder to get the milk, and they were hungry. I have a 10 year old, 3 year old and 6 month old - so we have similar ages! :) I would perservere with your 5 day old, as it does take 3 weeks for the milk supply to become established. I did feed my youngest for 3 months. Keep drinking lots of fluid and make sure you are eating alot too. Hope this helps!

I had breast implants 9 years prior to having my daughter last year. The surgery done for my implants included a reduction of my areolas. So, the nipples were cut all the way around and reattached. Also, my implants are under the muscles. I was still able to breastfeed my daughter.

Breasts are an amazing thing! If you were able to breastfeed prior to surgery, I would think you would still be able.

I had implants put in in 2000 and had a baby in 2006. I had them put under the muscle so i would be able to breast feed.

Unfortantly since i lost sensation to the bottom half of my breasts i was only able to produce milk from the top half of my breast and i only got half an oz from each breast. i worked really hard to build up my milk supply drinking mothers milk tea and taking phenegrete and reglen. At my most milk supply production was 3 oz from each breast total of 6 oz total.

I didnt give up due to lack of production...with hard work i did get some and it was still benifical to her. i breast fed for six months until she started regecting me.

Good luck.

I had breast implants about 4 years ago and had no problem at all breastfeeding my baby last July when she was born. My implants were inserted through a tiny incision in my arm pit and were placed behind the muscle. I would give it a try.
