Breastfeeding and Dental Work

I'm about to go into the dentist to have them look at a tooth that's been giving me a lot of trouble. I've been taking ibuprofen and tylenol at home for the pain. My question is, are there any procedures, meds, anesthesia methods, etc. that I should definitely avoid due to breastfeeding? My son is 10 months old. I like to be prepared, and I don't like to assume that doctors know enough about areas outside their specialty. Thanks!

What can I do next?

I had novacain for dental work while breastfeeding with no problems. But my daughter was older, maybe 12 months and not a newborn so I wasn't her prime food source either. Ask your pediatrician if you want to verify wha tthe dentist says and the pharmacist is always a good resource too.

My son is currently 6 months old, but not long after I had him I needed a root canal. If you have an infection they will put you on antibiotics before they start the root canal treatments. Because I was nursing they started with a mild form of antibiotics (I think it was amoxicillan) that would cause no interference with the breastfeeding. However the antibiotic wasn't working. Eventually they put me on another more intrusive antibiotic (the name escapes me). My pediatrician said it was ok to still breastfeed but that the baby may suffer from diarrhea as a result. So I did take him off and did formula for a few days. But he didn't seem to take as well to formula and even choked on it once. So I went back to breastfeeding. Honestly his poo was worse on the Enfamil than it was on the tainted breastmilk.

I share that to say that you do want to consult with your pediatrician but unless you have to, you may want to stay consistent with the breastmilk if at all possible. The shots you receive to deaden your gums are safe, it's just those antibiotics that may cause some diarrhea. And of course you know to stick to your ibuprofen or tylenol. They may prescribe some with codeine if your pain is severe. It's ok for the baby but it will make you very very sleepy so be careful with those.

I hope this helps. I couldn't see the other answers so I pray mine wasn't redundant.

I have a link on my website that will be helpful to you. Search medications allowed with breastfeeding. You could also use oragel too :) Good Luck with your dental procedure. D.

You must tell your dentist that you are breastfeeding, and they will give you the appropriate anesthesia and dosage. Dentists are like Doctors, they prescribe medicine and will know what is safe for breastfeeding. Yes, there is safe Novocain! Thank goodness, right?! I'm assuming your 10 month old is on some solids by now? Maybe you can have the procedure done in the morning, and feed him his solids or pumped breast milk during the day, then by night you won't have to worry, even though they say it's safe. Good Luck!

I just had a wisdom tooth pulled. My dentist advised me with the antibiotics i was given to pump and dump for that day. I ended up taking just half a days medecine and bottle fed breastmilk. My little girl does both. The local novicain doesn't do any harm. I didn't get put under for the procedure just local.

The dentist would know what is safe and what is not. Tell them over and over and over again that you are nursing. I just had some dome and I told the receptionist, I told the assistant and the dentist did not know until after she gave me the shot and said ooh I wish I would have know B4 I would have given you the stuff that is safe you will need to pump and dump 4 10 hours, great!!! I was PO'd. so tell all of them, write it on your forehead if you have to, but there is safe stuff as long as they give it to you.
