I am breastfeeding my 5.5 month old and really want to start loosing the baby weight. I wanna do some video work outs like beach body's 10 min trainer. I have heard that exersice that's a little more intense might decrease your milk supply. True? I really want to keep breatsfeeding but I will not loose weight if I don't exersice

What can I do next?

You should be fine.

Getting exercise is good for you. You can include baby, too. They even have whole programs devoted to mommy and baby yoga and whatnot. Or do stroller walks. Etc.

Be sure you get enough to eat and drink and you'll be ok! (And if you drink Gatorade after you work out don't freak if your milk changes colors!)

Of course, exercise. It is extremely important for your health. As others have said, though, it is even more important to eat good, healthy foods, and that means mostly plants. Minimize animal protein because it is high in fat...even turkey and chicken are. You can get your needed proteins from plants, mostly beans and whole grains, but even fruits and veggies have lots of protein in them.

You'll need more water...and drink only water. Sodas and sports drinks are mostly sugar. Diet sodas actually cause the body to crave more sugar (your body prepares for sugars even with diet as it 'tastes' the sweet and signals insulin production...but no sugar and you've experienced an insulin spike...anyway, I digress). Sports drinks are mostly chemicals and are not needed unless you experience excessive sweating. Try coconut water for electrolytes instead.

If you have any other questions about how to optimize your diet for exercise AND breastfeeding AND weight loss, feel free to contact me. I'd be happy to help (I've taken a series of classes taught by a Naturopath who has her PhD in Nutrition and am working for a certification as a Wellness Coach). Good luck. D.

What nut job told you that. Women did heavy farm work and nursed children. Women who walk long distances or runners still nurse. It's an old wives tale. If you curb your eating it can dry up your milk supply.

You should be fine. As another poster said, just make sure you eat and drink enough.

Exercise is unlikely to decrease your supply, unless you are exercising in an extreme fashion. At 5.5 months your milk supply is established, and adding 10 minutes a day (or, training for half-marathon) is unlikely to ruin it.

One thing that can happen is that additional lactic acid in the milk can make it taste funny directly after exercise - my kids never cared, but it seems like some kids do. Timing things so that you don't nurse directly after exercise can eliminate this problem. (And, i suppose, showering, so you don't taste salty.)

For what its worth, I exercised a lot after my (three) babies were born and it didn't help me lose weight at all. In fact, it just made me more hungry. I finally found what works for me...weight watchers. If you do it while breastfeeding (which is totally safe and does not reduce milk supply), you get about 10 extra points per day so the plan is very easy to follow. I learned a lot doing it too. If you try it, I think you will really like it too. Good luck.

Do it! Good job on being healthy for your baby. Make sure to stay well hydrated and you will be fine. I trained and ran a half marathon when my baby was 6 months and it had no effect on my milk supply, I nursed her until she was 18 months. Have fun!
