Breastfeeding and Getting My Period?

Hi ladies :o)

I'm 3 months into exclusively breastfeeding my third daughter and it's going great. She's eating well, sleeping good stretches at night (between 4-6 hours) and I feel like I've got a good supply for her. During the day we nurse every 1-2 hours. With my older 2 I nursed them for about a year each and didn't get my period until a good month after I weaned my second (I got pregnant while nursing my first, so no period at all! lol).

I had some spotting today and am feeling a little crampy, but no 'full blown' period yet (and hopefully I won't). My questions is, if I get my period *while* still breastfeeding, is it going to affect my supply or quality of milk?

What can I do next?

In my experience NO. I had my period every month and I breastfeed my son until he was over 2 years old. He was never on formula at all. He's 4 and would still love to be breastfeed, the other night, he said to me, he wanted milk from my boobies, I told him it's all dried up, he said, put some in them... just had to laugh at that one... He was never underweight. He tall, average, not fat, int he 90% on the charts.

i got my period back soon after my 1st and 2nd kids and i was EBF with both. it didn't affect my supply at all, but i did notice right before each period the kids didn't eat quite as well like it changed the taste slightly. however i nursed both for 2 years and through 2 pregnancies. so i'm sure you'll be fine:) good luck and congrats on the breastfeeding!!

No.

I got my period, within 6 months of breastfeeding, with both my kids. It did NOT affect my supply, nor them nursing.

Nope, shouldn't hurt. I got mine six weeks postpartum despite exclusive nursing. Some of us just get lucky and have periods while nursing. Ah the joys of motherhood ;)

No, getting your period will not affect your supply or quality of milk. I got mine while breastfeeding exclusively and my babies continued to nurse just fine. BUT, you still can get pregnant even while breastfeeding! Don't buy into the myth that you won't or cannot.

Nope! My youngest was just under a year when I started again and it didn't affect it all. She still happily breastfed for about another 2 1/2 years. :)

No, I had mine after a few months as well and continued exclusive breast feeding for many months after.

No. I got my period with my first child I think around 1yr and with my second I had "peek a boo" periods (come/go) from 3mos - 6mos and than got my period at 9mos. He nursed well past that.

With my first one I got my period at five months and with my second at four months. No problem with milk supply or quality. Didn't seem to phase them at all! (I was a little disappointed that I didn't get more "period-free" time, though!)

No, it doesn't affect supply or quality at all. I have two children and the longest I went w/o a period was 5 1/2 months, but I nursed them each well into toddlerhood. Nothing to worry about!

It can affect your supply temporarily, but then your supply will return to normal. Your milk will still be the best food you can offer your baby!

No problem with the milk supply. Most women get their period at around 8 months after their baby is born.
You might be ovulating. Use birth control as some women conceive again as you did with your first two children.
