This is normal. I breastfed both my kids and I got my 1st period 6 mos after they were born. And it was a normal period for me. Just remember, you can get pregnant again while your breastfeeding too. So be careful if you don't want another one right away.

most women don't get their period during nursing....I usually didn't get mine until the babies started solids and it was always heavy but that's normal for me. Are you supplementing w/formula?...that could have the same effect...either way I know my ob said that it was a myth that you don't get your cycle while you nurse...there are a lot of oops pregnancies because women think they are safe when they're not...I think it's different for everyone but I usually had mine...goodluck!

I nursed 4 kids and got my period back after 7 months or 9 months of nursing.. it was nice to go that long without my period... I did, however, get PREGNANT while nursing, which I proved to be a MYTH! :) I guess they're all myths! :)

All my best,

Hey! I am exclusively bfing and I got my period only a month after my son was born. He started sleeping through the night and I think that was the cause. Mine was also very heavy the first time. I read that it's because your uterus is still getting rid of leftover lochia.

hi A., with my 1st, i got my period back at 9 mos, very heavy. with my 2nd, i got one period at 5 mos, then not again until 14 mos. my 3rd is now 11 mos, and still no period. my point being that it is all different, different babies, different moms. are you nursing exclusively or do you supplement? if you are exclusively nursing, this might very well be one "rogue" period and you may not get it again for a while, often at least until the baby starts solids. just know that even if you dont get your period again, you CAN get pregnant in the 2 weeks before you would be getting your period. you will ovulate and most likely not know it. you can check with your doc, but im sure you are fine. congrats on the baby :)

With both of my children, I got my period one time during the breastfeeding period, up to a year old. After that, i did get my period but they were weaning, up to a year and a half old. I had questions on that as well. It is normal, especially in the beginning, when your body is adjusting to nursing, and first figuring out how much to make. With my first child, I got my period once, and then not again. I actually thought I was pregnant again due to this, but it was jsut that my body was still in the adjustment period.

If you have any more concerns regarding this, you should talk to your doctor, but keep in mind that every woman is different. I hope this helped.

A lot of moms don't get periods while nursing, but I know of people that have, the entire time. It is possible that you have been doing too much and that the bleeding is related to childbirth. You can bleed for two months after the baby is born, so don't overlook that possibility. As for how heavy...for me, before having kids I had a very light, very short period. Now I cannot even leave my house for days and I bleed for 9 days. It is a nightmare. I hope that this will lessen in time since I have pretty much been pregnant or nursing a baby for the last 9 years! I just weaned my last baby so I hope that in time my periods will go back to my prepregnancy days. Your body will never be the same!
