Just wanted to hear from other moms who are nursing & also taking the medication Zoloft. I have a 17month old who is still breastfeeding & I just as of today had to get myself started on Zoloft because I suffer severe anxiety & mild depression(Ive been wide awake for 2 nights straight). I didnt want to take anything but he only nurses really before he naps and at night. I was just looking for some comforting words from other moms who have had to start taking meds while nursing... TIA!

What can I do next?

I honestly say that sometimes medication is a way of life that is absolutely necessary. But with all the lawsuits against Zoloft I think I would find out from a pharmacist if it's okay.

Pharmacist know meds, doc's don't, pharmacists have gone to college to know meds, docs are given the information about meds by a pharmaceutical rep hired by companies trying to sell it to the docs.

You need to take it. It's just not necessary for you to suffer so. I started Zoloft 2.5 months ago and I am so glad I did.

I too am nursing (8 month old) and I heavily weighed the decision to start
or not start...... I felt guilty about taking it as I'm guessig you do too. But, the doctors I've spoken with have all said that it is safe. I know there are no guarantees but I decided to listen to the medical community on this one.

I can not begin to tell you how much better I feel. My anxiety has been greatly reduced and I am much happier in general. I feel enthusiastic about things and am so much more engaged with my kids. I am such a better mother, wife, friend now.....

Give yourself a break. Take it. Feel better. You don't have to live with anxiety. People don't get that anxiety and depression are chemical.... You deserve to be treated ..... Just like a woman with any other illness deserves to be treated.

My OB recommended I take the pill after nursing at night so that most of it would be metabolizes by the morning..... Or pick your biggest non-nursing window and take it then.

It takes 4 weeks to really kick in fully. When and if you do start, tell a few
close people around you so they can also help you gauge whether or not it is working.

I think you can have it all..... You can feel better and keep nursing. Listen to experts. People tend to have a lot of personal opinions on this stuff that aren't based in research.

Good luck and I really hope you feel better.

Dont do it.... please google zoloft and birth defects or lawsuits on zoloft. Sorry about your anxiety, but girl I had them for over 30 years and I found a cure. I can not post it on here since they frown against referring websites, so I will private email you the information. Remember this, meds for anxiety and depression is like putting a metal blanket on the real problem. Once you stop the problem is back. You can beat this on your own with no meds... Please dont pass the meds to your child through your breast milk. Read all the bad things on zoloft and the effect on babies. Good Luck, I will send you that website in your private email.

I took Effexor my entire pregnancy and nursing relationship... no issues. Majority of anti-depressants are safe and breastfeeding compatible.

Zoloft is an L2 - SAFER
If taking under 100mg - you have no worries, studies done show that after a month of 100mg a day, there were barely any presence of the drug in the baby's system and was barely detectable. Does not reach therapeutic levels in baby.

"Medications and Mother's Milk" Dr T Hale, 29008 Edition
Over 100mg per day... I'd talk about this with your Dr

I have taken zoloft for years now. I go off it when pregnant, but have successfully breastfed 2 children (both nursed for over a year) while on it. I just had my baby and started on it the day after she was born. I have had no problems with it, and my kids are fine! :)

I'm pretty sure I'd be a little leery about it. Might be time to stop nursing if you are gonna introduce psychiatric meds or sleep meds into your blood stream. Docs might say it's okay, but I'm not one to trust docs much when it comes to chemicals and kids....... they only think about the money they get by addicting you to drugs. Just my opinion. 20 years from now if your child has a condition caused by Zoloft, you'd beat yourself up I'm sure. It would definitely have some type of effect in your breast milk, how could it not?
Anti depressants help you "not to feel"... not a good thing to do to a kids brain.

HI D.,

My brother has come completely off his Cymbalta through chiropractic care. I am a strong advocate as I believe everything in our system stems from the heath of our neurological system which is controled by the spine. It took me two years to convince him to go but he called me the other day and told me that he had been seeing an upper cervical chiropractor for several months now and his is off his Cymbalta as well as another med.

Zoloft is terribly dangerous, not just to your little one but long term problems for you.

God bless!

Did you ask the doctor who prescribed the medication about it? I don't think you're supposed to take anti-depressants while nursing. A friend of mine had to forgo nursing and feed her baby formula as she needed to get back on her anti-depressant once the baby was born.
