C.S.
I had this for too long, thought it was thrush/yeast and kept treating it for that, my reg. doc and LLL both diagnosised it wrong, I FINALLY went to a dermatologist, it was some weird rash, gave me an oinment and it was gone in days.
I am currently nursing my almost 10 month old who is my third child (all BF). About a week ago my right nipple started hurting. Its only my right, it feels like it has gotten chewed raw. My baby does have two bottom teeth but she has had them for a couple of months. i have started taking a probiotic, eating yogurt, using Garition violet, and trying to air it out as best I can. I have also gotten a nipple shield to help it heal but that really made my daughter mad so thats out. My supply is really starting to suffer cause I am not nursing her that long on that side. No white patches on baby or anything else. Has this happened to anyone else or have any in sight?

Teeth made my DD forget her latch. I told her "gentle" and unlatched her when it hurt. Then I let her try again. Happened just about any time she got new teeth. You might also try pumping one side and nursing the other for a little while. Your own milk or lanisoh may also help. You mentioned the gentian violet but maybe you need something else.
My daughhter got a lazy latch right around that age - that along with the new teeth totally rubbed my nipple raw (sorry for the TMI).
I just used lansinoh and made sure to correct her latch each and every time she nursed... it only took a week or so to get it right again.
I second Ina - I remember having to deal with a similar situation with my son. His latch just got lazy on one side and my nipple got super-sore. I probably encouraged him to latch on better, but I can't quite remember. It clearly resolved because he is still nursing after 2.5 years.
I had many issues with my third and the only thing that ever helped was using Newmans ointment. My OB called in a prescription for me...heals you up within a day or so.
I've used the hydrogel pads to help nipple healing (I used them when my second was first learning to nurse... my nipples looked like they'd been through a cheese grater!)... they work really well. There are a couple of different brands. I recommend sticking them in the fridge before putting them on for maximum sooth.
I'm sorry to hear of your pain. I suggest that you find a lactation consultant.
It could very likely be thrush (that "gotten chewed raw" look is exactly what you would see with thrush. It's easy to forget that you could have thrush while your baby doesn't (I should say, doesn't show symptoms).
Certainly ask your OB/GYN to prescribe for both you and your baby. You don't want to get rid of the thrush on you only to find that your baby has transferred it back to you! Yuck!
Sounds like thrush to me. Baby doesn't necessarily have to present with symptoms in order for you to have it. Go to the doc and get it treated. I went the first 8 months of bfing my first with undiagnosed thrust and it was HELL. Go get it treated....trust me!
