I have a 4 month old son (first baby) who is breastfed soley. Lately in the last 2-3 weeks he seems to favor one side vs. the other. He spends about 3-5 mintues on one side and then 12-15 on the other. Sometimes he fusses on the side he only spends a couple of mintues on. I am not sure if I have a slower let down so he gets tired of waiting or if I don't have as much milk on that side. Any advice or has this happened to anyone else.

What can I do next?

I had the same experience when I breastfed my son. At the time I was attending La Leche League- the other moms referred to the preferred breast as "Chocolate Milk". It's no big deal, I heard the less perferred breast may have a different taste, based on something you ate (more sweet, or more bitter), or it could be like you said, slower let down, or the opposite, the let down may be too fast. You may want to pump the breast that he's not nursing on to avoid engorgement, and so your supply dosen't decrease.

Good Luck

My son did the same thing for a while. It ended up not being because of any difference in my breasts, but his preference for laying on his right side. I would nurse him on my right side holding him in my arms and on my left, I would use a boppy pillow and the football hold so he was still laying on his right side. Eventually he outgrew it. The football hold, sort of under your arm and to the side, was really nice. I could hold a book, the remote, or my daughter without bugging him while he ate. Breastfeeding is great for bonding, but sometimes it's just nice to sit and veg out, too.

We sound very smilar J., I am a part time stay at home mom with a 4.5 month old daughter who did the same thing! She is just starting to get better. I decided to try the side she likes better first, so when she goes to the "bad" side the milk is already let down and comes out quickly for her. I also started pumping sometimes on that side when I finish so it keeps its supply up. Then slowly but surely the supply came up and when that side is really full, she has started to take it better. I also noticed that she sleeps with her head turned mainly to one side, and that is how she likes to eat too! So when getting her to the "bad" side sometimes I try to get her head the way she likes (even thought it makes holding her on that side very awkward.) When she first started this and I pumped at work I was getting double on one side, but now the other side is slowly but surely catching up.

So mainly try to pump a couple of times on that "bad" side to get its supply up and he might start liking it again, also adjust how you are holding him. Hope this helps!

My son started doing that around the same time too. The funny thing is that he would favor one for a while, then the other, then go back again. Eventually, he just started liking them equally again, which I know is weird. It may just be a phase, and your baby may just grow out of it!

My 3 mo son does the same thing. With all 3 of my babies, one boob has ALWAYS gotten bigger and produced more milk. I just put him on the "gimpy" boob first and let him suck to his heart's desire, which isn't very long! Then, I put him on the other side. It's funny b/c when he was first born, he loved the gimpy side! I think the bigger side was too much for him. But now that he's getting older, he can handle the bigger side. I hope that makes sense! You can always message me if you have any ?'s!

I have breastfed (solely) my 4 kids and have one side that is less favored and seems to produce less. They got what they needed as strange as it was to me to experience. As long as you do not feel full or sore when he is done, and he is not cranky afterward it is probably just fine. It is very possible that he could drain that one side in 5 min. Keep at it, you are giving him the best!

Hi J.,

I breast fed both my kids, they are now 5yrs old and 22 months. Sometimes they are just more comfortable on one side. But if you really think that your milk is letting down slower on one side. Try pumping it after you feed the baby this will increase your milk production on that side. It always seemed to speed up the flow of the milk for me, also. Good luck.
