Breastfeeding While Lying Down?

Hi moms,
I have a 7 week old and breastfeeding is going along great! Only problem, she will not nurse while I am lying down. I think I am following the instructions in the books I have, but we just can't seem to get the hang of it. Any other position, she is fine with. Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated!

What can I do next?

I started feeding my son in this position from the day I came home from the hospital. A couple of tips - make sure that your breast is supported so that your nipple is easily accessible for your little one. Also, support her back with a pillow or something so that she doesn't rollover as easily until she gets the hang of it. This is the only way that I get sleep at night! Keep trying and don't give up - I prefer to lie down and feed the majority of the time. I am comfy and so is my son! Congrats on your new bundle of joy! Kay from the Nesting Place may have some great ideas as she is a lactation consultant - I would ask her! She is really fabulous. I took my breastfeeding class and newborn care class from her. I see her on MamaSource a lot. You may want to send her a private message! Good luck!

It really helped us nurse lying down if I had a pillow wedged behind my back, and then a small blanket or rolled up towel behind my sons. he felt more secure, and didn't roll back as easily.

I just had my third baby a week ago and I wouldn't get any sleep at all if she didn't nurse while I was lying down! What I do is put her on one of my pillows.. like she's on a little bed. This elevates her to a really good height and I put my breast up there with her. I can actually do both breasts and never have to roll over. The other thing you might try is the Nursing Nest. You can get them at Burlington Coat Factory and probably babies r us. It positions baby in the perfect position for lying down and feeding. Good luck!

It may be possible that she has some ear trouble, like a mild infection or something. My daughter couldn't lie down with me to nurse when she had one.

Good luck,

Kristin,

laying on your side with your nipple almost touching the bed and then make sure your baby laying on her side as well, perhaps with a blanket rolled for support behind her should work well. If not I would be happy to help with a short consultation to problem solve thru it.

I can't remember when exactly, but mine did eventually nurse lying down. He was about 3 months and I think the snuggling really made it for him but then, he was a big snuggler and liked to nap at the breast so it was a fairly easy transition for us. Just keep trying and I'm sure she'll get it.

I couldn't get it at all at first either. It just takes time. Good luck!

We weren't comfortable BFing lying down until Meara was a bit older (3 of 4 mos, maybe?) but when she finally did start to accept the position I was soooo grateful! :)

You've got your hands full with two little ones; I'm sure you could use some downtime (literally!).

Never had this problem at all. All of my babes nursed fine laying down. Are you large or small breasted? Maybe this makes a difference. I am very large breasted so it was easier to lay down and nurse than sit up and smother the baby with my huge breast in the beginning. Now he just holds it up for himself. LOL!
