What are some healthy ways i can increase my breast milk supply that do NOT involve any alcohol? I know more demand more supply. I have been trying to pump at least twice a day after baby has nursed and I only get 1-3 ozs. He usually nurses every 2-3 hours throughout the day. Even when I pump about 1 1/2 hours after he has nursed i only get 1-2 ozs. The reason I try pumping at 1-2 hours after her nursed is so I can offer a fresh bottle at least once a day.

What can I do next?

Oatmeal, lactation cookies http://realilfemum.blogspot.com/2010/08/lactation-cookies..., make granola with oatmeal and flax seed, fenugreek, hops, brewers yeast. Things with high fiber.
Feed feed feed.

Update... what Rachael says is true about the flanges/shields on the pump. Go to the madela website and look up correct fit and make sure your flanges are the right size. It will make a big difference. Also a warm wash cloth on your breasts. Kellymom is a great resource for breast feeding. There are loads of solutions on there.

When I was having supply problems with my first son I told Fenugreek you can get at any natural food store. It really helped increase my milk supply just be aware it make you smell like maple syrup:-)

Fenugreek! A friend of mine had to pump exclusivly for her baby that was in the NICU for his first month of life. Pumping is hard as it is, but she was also very stressed which in itself can hurt the supply. It worked wonders for her and she was able to pump enough for him to be fed through his continuous flow feeding tube as well as establish a great freezer stock. Pumping in the morning will also give you the best output.

Try fenugreek and teas that support lactation (found in the health food section of the grocery store - here are two kinds I like: http://bit.ly/bBH0dh and http://bit.ly/czbQUw). Take prenatal vitamins, get plenty of liquids and rest, take warm showers before pumping (or use warm compress on breasts beforehand), eat oatmeal, and drink raspberry juice (or any other 100% juice).

Remember that babies drink less breastmilk than formula. Since it is more nutritionally dense, they require less of it. Additionally, nursing is a more efficient method of extraction, so you may not pump as much as he will get during a feeding. I have also heard if the breast shields (or whatever they are called - the suction cups that go over your nipples) are too small, it is more difficult to get milk.

You didn't say what kind of pump you are using but some pumps are much more efficient that others. A good lactation support place can help you determine this. Your baby is much more efficient at getting milk than pumping will be so it might not be how much you are supplying but how you are getting it out. Are you getting a good let-down? Making sure you are relaxed with a shower, maybe pictures of your baby or having your baby there, etc. can help get your let down going. Kangaroo Kids in Glendale, MO might have some ideas.

Mother's milk either tea or pill form, found a natural stores. It is a combination of fenugreek and blessed thistle (2 natural herbs). You can also just get those 2 supplements, I found them cheaper buying both than by buying mother's milk, so that's what I did. My lactation consultant was awesome and told me all about them. She told me to start to rebuild, I needed to take enough my pee smelled like maple syrup, but then I could decrease the amount to maintain. I'm due again in Dec, with baby 2 and got a welcome to the neighboorhood coupon (we moved in July) from the local natural store, I went and stocked up for when baby comes and I need it.

Good luck!!

I went through the same thing. I tried some of the natural remedies, but they didn't seem to work for me.

Something my doctor suggested is to cut out caffeine and make sure you are drinking enough water. The time of day that you pump also makes a difference, since you tend to make more milk in the morning than at night.

I've also read that massaging your breasts while you are pumping can help. Pumps are great but not as effective as a nursing baby. Hand expressing after you pump may help make sure your breasts were totally emptied. Looking at a photo of your baby or smelling a blanket your baby has slept with is supposed to help as well.

Good luck!
