Bug-themed Bday Party--creative Ideas Needed!

Hey moms. My 3-yr-old son has chosen a bug theme for his bday party (plates, napkins, etc were at Party City). I don't particularly like bugs myself but thought it would be cute for a boy's party. My only thought right now is to just make cupcakes (chocolate to look like dirt) and put gummy worms or something like that on top. They had some little bug candles so I could just put those on my son's cupcake as well. Does anybody have any other creative ideas for decorating, favors, snacks, games, etc? I know mamasource won't let me down!

Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much mommas for all your help! The party went great! You all had some great ideas which were very helpful. I got the bug catchers for each kid from Dollar General (normally $2 each but they gave them to me for $1.50 ea) and got some live ladybugs from Mike's Garden Center (1,000 ladybugs normally around $10, on sale for $8). The kids loved it (except for one little girl with a fear of bugs after a traumatic bite incident--oops!). I did an inchworm cake using a bundt cake (from bettycrocker.com) and various cupcakes (some with gummy worms, some made to look like ladybugs with frosting and m&m's). I made a honey-nut dip and put it in a mound on a platter with apple slices for wings and made a face with m&m's and leftover frosting. I also stumbled upon some bug shaped graham crackers at w-mart. If anybody is doing a bug party and wants to see pics of the apple bug dip, inchworm cake or cupcakes--email me!

I find quite a few ideas off brightideas.com. They are usually pretty easy to do and they have lots of ideas (with chocolate candies!). Just put "bug" in the search engine and see what it comes up with. Good luck, I'm sure you will have a buggy good time! :)

How about a bug hunt for plastic bugs hidden around your yard/house? As for favors what about bug catchers? You could use them for the bug hunt. You can also play Pin-the-bug-on-a-leaf. Like pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey? You could make ice cubes with plastic bugs in them (using an ice cub tray) the kids will think there are bugs in the juice!

I found this link on Google. I might just have to steal this idea myself.

Happy birthday to you little boy,

Hope it's not too late! I make 'Spider' crackers for my daughter's Halloween-themed b'day a few years ago. Take a ritz cracker, spread it w/peanut butter, use pretzel sticks for legs (4 on each side) and top with another cracker with a dab of pb on top to hold two raisins for 'eyes'. The kids loved them and so did the parents! Email if you'd like a pic!

You could get those antenna headbands for favors. And instead of pin the tale on the donkey you could do pin the stinger on the bee or something. You could get a bug shaped pinata. You could have a checherboard picnic tablecloth with a cute basket on the table and spread fake bugs around the food like they are coming to a picnic, or the birthday cake could look like a basket with strawberries or fruit on it... you could wear cute butterfly wings or get several for the girls to set the "theme"... string green ballons together and draw a smiley face on the end for a giant caterpillar... and red balloons and draw spots and a line down the middle for ladybugs! Have little pigs in a blanket and little finger foods. Whew, sorry so much!
