Have you rented a car, its covered, borrowed someone's car its covered. Same deal. You have a fair bit of time to call but it is definitely covered when you drive it off the lot.

Most insurance policies cover a new car (or newly purchased used car) for a few days until you can contact them to set up the new insurance.

Keep a copy of the insurance card in the glove box AND the proof of purchase in case you get stopped by the police. That shows proof of insurance.

You, as the driver, should be covered.... you are covered in any car you drive, whether it is yours or not.

You call the insurance from the dealership and add the new car. There is sometimes a 24-48 ish hour grace period or buffer in which to do so afterward. Call your insurance to find out for sure!

I believe you have 24 hrs to notify your ins. company of the change of vehicle but you WILL need proof of current ins to buy the vehicle.

I literally called my insurance company from the auto dealership right after I had signed the purchase contract and added my new vehicle to my policy. And deleted the one I traded in. :)

Oh, but you can call your insurance company before you buy and get an estimate of what the insurance will cost for your new vehicle.

The dealership did the initial process when I leased my car, but I called the following day to "seal" the deal..

You will need to provide a copy of your current insurance. You can't call before you go, because the first thing the insurance will ask for is the VIN# of your new vehicle, which you haven't chosen yet.

Here in VA, there is a 24 hour buffer on a automatic insurance coverage for new vehicles. Depending on what time of day you finish the deal, call the insurance as you are leaving the dealership.

24 hours is usually the standard. Most of the time the dealer will send them all of the info for you but definitely call when you get home.

You show that you have insurance on your current vehicle and then add/change it there or at home. At least the last time I bought a car from a lot!

I think depends on insurance. We have a 14 day grace period...but you call right away. Call your insurance and ask most have a 24 hour call line

Once you purchase the car you need to contact your agent ASAP. Personally I would call ahead of the purchase and find out cost monthly. It is not the dealerships responsibility to ensure you have insurance coverage. In most states you have to have the insurance in place to licenses. But again, I would do it before hand so that it can be in place before I purchase.

I had to have my insurance called with an updated policy set up before I could leave the lot. This was MD and about 10 years ago. Call your ins. and verify.

I am an insurance agent in Pennsylvania. If you have a current automobile policy in force, you can show them the ID card for your current vehicle. If you are financing or leasing the vehicle, the dealership will most likely call your agent to confirm coverages (comprehensive, collision, etc). BUT and this is very important, it is YOUR responsibility to contact your agent to add the vehicle to your policy. In PA, we have Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage. If you are adding a car (not replacing a vehicle), the insurance company will require new signed forms. Basically, there is a lot of stuff going on when you get a new car. Call your agent to find out what they require. (Hope I didn't confuse this issue too much!) Check out www.keytoinsurance.com. Thanks!
