C-section Pains-please Help

I just had a c-section with my first child on November 25th. Everything went good until I came home and a few days later I started getting extremely sharp pains around where the staples are. It is on the left side of my incision and the pain is by far the worst pain I have ever felt in my life. I also get it off and on on my right side as well. I can't move or walk when it hits me. Even standing still it hurts. I am taking hydrocodone and it is not doing anything for me. I thought that maybe my skin was healing around the staples and that is why it is hurting but I had the staples removed today and it still hurts very very bad. Has anyone dealt with this or know what it could be?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you sooooo much for all of your responses. They have gave me a lot of information as to why I am hurting as well as other things to try. Hopefully they will work and I will heal as time goes by. I did go to my doctor today and she said everything is fine. I have no swelling, redness, or leaking fluids. She said the under most layer was over lapped and stitched making it tight, so any movement I make is pulling on it. The more I move the better to relax it. I wasn't taking the motrin every 6 hours because the pharmacy put on there to take once a day. I now know to take it more than that. Again, thank you so much for your advice and I can't wait to be feeling better!

Hi C.,

I had the same thing. However, when I finally realized what was going on, I had already had developed a serious infection. I'm not trying to scare you, but I wound up in the hospital for a whole week. I would go to the doctor and just have it checked out. It's always better to be safe than sorry. Trust me.

Hi C....I would defninitely recommend you talk with your Dr. While pain is normal after having a C-section, you shouldn't be experiencing that sharp of pain where its immobilizing you. I had a C-section with my 1st and took Vicodin afterwards, which helped, along with restrictive activity (no heavy lifting, etc.). Good luck & congratulations on your new bundle of joy!!

Hi C., I had a cecerin too. But I did not have staples; my stiches disolved. The surgery is major and takes awhile to heal (like two months). And the area still felt painful numbing 6 to 9 months later. Hydocodone only made me constipated and insucure. I quit taking hydocodine and took ex-strength IBU. If pain is that bad request something else. Share this with your doctor, but the truth is, it just takes time to heal. A big congratulations on your daughter. It only gets better and better. And a little advice: hold your baby as much as you can, they grow up quickly. God Bless...and...Merry Christmas.

I had the same problem, but I ignored it until I had a huge ulcer on my incision. Unfortunately mine was staph. Your's may just be a stitch/staple that you're body has rejected. Or a less severe infection. Please go and have it checked out. Because I waited I had to have almost half my insision cut out and I had to pack an open wound. I don't wish that on anybody. Best of luck to you.

whoa-- did you tell your doctor you were having these pains? I really don't have any experience with c sections but am in the medical field. You have to remember that the staples are only on the outside. The doctor went through 7 layers to get your baby out!! That's a lot of stitching!! Try to take it easy postpartum, but please let him know, you could possibly have an infection that makes it hurt so much and you don't want that incision to dehiss and take months to heal...

Yes. I did. Ask your doctor if you can "piggy-back" the hydrocodone with motrin OR take motrin at the same time as the hydrocodone. This helped me, but I was on Vicodin.

If it's any consolation the first C-section is by far the worst for pain (don't feel bad about calling your doctor!). I've had 4 C-sections and the last 3 were NOTHING compared to my first one. It WILL get better. I promise. Try to hang in there!

Also: Try to lie on the couch on your back with your head propped up and relax as much as you can. You'll likely find (as I did) that this helps relieve the pressure that standing or sitting up puts on your incision. **A pillow under your knees helps to keep comfortable also. Don't do things you aren't supposed to (like vacuuming or lifting) it WILL cause you pain - though you will likely not feel it until later.

PS Something nobody told me: Try NOT to sneeze for a few weeks. :)

I hope you feel better soon. I'm sure you'll get tons of great advice here from moms who have been there too :)

C.,

I've had two c-sections but was fortunate not to receive staples. The best advice I was given was to stand up straight everytime I would get up to walk around. I was in intense pain for the first week but I must say the scar tissue was not nearly as bad as it could have been. My doctor was surprised when I went in for my 2nd c-section and he saw there was little scar tissue. Beyond that recommendation I have nothing else except to say take it easy and enjoy every moment with this little one. Mine are now 7 and 5. It goes by so fast. Best wishes....G.

You've had a lot of responses on this, but I thought I'd add one more. I had extremely sharp pains after my c-section right at the ends of the suture lines. I couldn't even stand up when it hit. After talking to my doctor, we determined it was scar tissue building up and that the best way to deal with it was to massage the area every day and it actually helped. You should definitely call your doctor right away and go from there. It could be so many things, so best to be safe. Good luck and congratulations.

I've had a c-section & it was painful, but wasn't the worst pain I've ever experienced. Maybe you should talk to your doctor about what you're feeling. It's very possible that it is your nerve endings healing. They have to cut through a lot to get your baby out, so it's normal to feel pain. Talking to your doctor or his nurse is my best advice because their answers will put you at ease.

I have no experience with c-sections, but it is always a good idea to let your doctor know what is happening. This might be normal pain, and he/she needs to tell you that, or it might be something serious.

Also, I know any surgery requires moderate exercise. In order to get up and walk around and do what you normally do, you need your pain meds. Pain meds, according to my c-section friends and the literature at the hospital, really do help you heal by allowing you to do your normal routine. If your meds aren't helping you, tell the doctor that too! He/she may need to prescribe something different. The pain meds should work effectively enough for you to go on about your life - that is what will help you heal!

So.......talk to your doctor. Rule out something serious. Tell him/her just what you said here. And ask for different pain meds.

Good luck! I don't envy you, but I know that it's normal to have pains around the incision site even months later, according to my friends.

I had sharp pains after mine for a while. One thing that helped was when I would stand up or sit down I would take a small firm pillow and hold it on my scar. This would help with the pain.

Also, be sure to take baby steps. I started walking for about 20 to 30 minutes every day when I got home. When I say walk I mean shuffle my feet down the street and back. This helped me recover.

Take it slow. Be sure you have someone to help with the baby. I had trouble standing up and sitting down with the baby.

While I still suggest asking your OB, I had something similar with my first c-section. It was on my left side, it kept me from doing alot of things, I thought that I was never going to heal. Then it went away. When I asked the doctor she couldn't see anything so we left it alone. I still have no idea why it hurt SO bad, but it turned out fine :)

Good luck!

I too just had a C-section. I'm having the pains like that as well. I've been dealing with constipation which has made it soooo much worse. Now that I'm finally moving, things are much, much better. I'm also taking Tylenol 3 with ibuprophen. I'm having much better pain control with it than I did my first C-section on just hydrocodone. If you take 400 mgs ibuprophen, take every four hours. If you take 600 mgs, every six hours.

If you're constipated at all try mineral oil and Miralax. That's what finally worked for me. I'd tried enemas and everything I could get my hands on.

If you are breastfeeding, your uterus contracting may also be contributing to the sharp pains. However, I would most definately communicate your symptoms with the doc or nurse just to be sure there's not something serious.

Congrats! Each day gets better.

I had a c-section with my daughter. I didn't have staples put in, but any sharp pains is NOT normal. I would go back to the doctor and have them look at you and check for hernias or possible infections or blood clots.

You should be very sore after a c-section, but not in the kind of pain you are describing.

Speaking from experience: I had an emergency c-section and I am having sympathy pains as we speak for you..lol. Unless you are having abnormal bleeding, high fever, or a crazy discharge then you are just fine. I hate to say it, but the pain IS the worst you will ever feel, honey, and it will get better. I called my doctor several times for pain advice and he renewed my prescription twice and after that, it was motrin. My pain was so bad, I would get the chills.
You had a major surgery where your body was cut open quickly, had a baby yanked out of it, and then you're sewn back up only to be sent home with a small life to take care while in serious pain. Hang In There! You will be surprised at what your body can take. Keep walking like the doctors tell you, keep your incision area clean with the saline they give you and just be patient. I know it hurts like hell but trust me, you will be okay. I had my baby girl 8.5 months ago and my scar still gets tender and itches. I know grandmothers whose scars still get tender. The main thing is to not panic and realize that this will pass. Just don't sit there and suffer. If you think there is really something wrong, call your doctor immediately.

Hey C., sorry you are having so much pain. Are the pains coming when you lay down or when you are just sitting? I had similar pains with my last c-section(#2 July 1st),and my doctor told me it was all apart of the healing process. My pains lasted a little over two weeks. Try to take it easy don't over do it, don't lift anything heavier than your baby and give yourself time to heal.Take it easy and if the pains do not seem to get any better consult with your doctor.Let me know if I can be of any help, I hope you start to feeling better.

I had a c-section with my 1st delivery last November and I had the same kind of pain. My pain was on the opposite side and the nurse indicated that it was the side that they doctor stood on to operate and remove my son. She said that the tugging from the delivery can often cause those types of pain afterward depending on how much they pull on the baby at delivery. Just a thought. Hope that your pain subsides soon and best of luck with your new addition.

Congrats on the new baby. Not to scare you, but the pain that I had would knock me to the floor as well. I can remember having pains as you speak with my 2 C-Sections. It turned out to be a nerve sewn into the incision. I assume it had to be a major nerve because I had to take medication to dissolve the portion of that nerve that was in the incision. The medication that they gave me would make me so sleepy that I could not function so I discontinued. I still have the pains every now and then, but I have requested latocaine patches, which have helped tremendously. I hated to be taking medication and not being aware of anything, especially when my daughter was so small.

I wish you all the luck.

First of all, congratulations on your beautiful bundle of joy.

I have had natural birth and also a c-section with my second baby, she's 2 now. I know what you are talking about; unbearable pain that seems to get worse with walking. however, the antidote IS walking, not overdoing it, but moderate excercise by walking at intervals. When the pain intensifies, please lay down.

One thing that might help though is the pain meds. You really need them, if hydrocodone is not helping much, call your doctor, see if he can prescribe Darvocet. Different people have different reactions to these 2 pain meds, Darvocet works better for me too. Make sure you take these pain pills every 4 to 6 hours consistently for at least the first 8 to 10 days, then the pain shouldn't be as intense anymore and then you can taper them off. Don't be ashamed to ask for more pills when you run out, pain shouldn't be ignored and there is no pain like a C-section pain!

I hope this helps you somehow. Feel free to PM me if you want. I am currently pregnant with my 3rd baby and it will be by C-section also come April.

Hi there! I am a nurse and use to work the post-partum unit and had many moms with this complaint. If you can, you need to take an anti-inflammatory medication, for example Motrin, or Ibuprofen. You can take about 800 mg three times a day and it is safe to take if you are breastfeeding. I hope this helps.
