Cake Not What I wanted....should I Complain?

I know this is a silly question.....

Yesterday was my birthday and I asked my husband to pick up a cake from a grocery store. I have tasted their cake before and it was really good and made me want some more. However, I always make my kids cake so I wasn't sure when I would ever get the chance to have the grocery store's cake again. Finally, yesterday was my chance. I asked my husband to pick up a yellow or white cake with white icing. He did and it looked good. I looked forward all day to this cake and when I took a bite it had almond extract in it. I hate almond extract and was so disappointed! Now there is a cake in the fridge and I have no desire to eat any of it (could be a good thing). Anyway, I checked the label and all it says is it's a white cake. Shouldn't it have said something about almond extract? I feel like saying something to the bakery.

EDIT***Not really wanting to get a refund or anything. I just think the bakery should be aware that their cake, or at least this one, is not the flavor I expected. After all the replies, I checked the ingredient list (I had no idea so much junk went into a store bought cake) and saw there was no almond extract listed. There was artificial and natural flavor added so maybe that was the almond extract??? It also had the peanut and tree nut allergy warning. I know for sure it was not just a simple white cake. I think I will still mention something to them about the flavor.

What can I do next?

In the grand scheme of things, it is a very minute problem, but an annoyance none-the-less, and as a paying customer, you are entitled to receive what you thought you were purchasing. I'd give them a call and tell them that you were dissatisfied with it because of the almond flavoring, and that they should have lableled it as an almond-flavored white cake. Doesn't hurt to tell them. Maybe they'll offer a replacement, or at least a cupcake :)

I was a manager at Whole Foods for years and have dealt with thousands of returns and customer complaints about food. I am sure the bakery will take the cake back and give you a new one, but I don't know if it is really fair for you to complain- especially if others have eaten the cake at this point. If it was only for you and you just took one little piece, that's one thing, but if your family has finished more than half of it, I would be embarrassed to bring it back! (I once had a customer try and return about $150 worth of lobster SHELLS- claiming that the meat had 'all gone bad' and they had thrown in out, but were bringing the shells in to complain for a refund, lol.)

Unless you and your husband specifically requested that the bakery not use almond extract in their cake, then no, sorry. How on earth would the bakery know not to use it if you did not request it?

Many white or yellow cakes are made with different flavorings- almond or vanilla, etc. If it is not listed on the ingredients list, are you POSITIVE it even has almond extract in it? Sometimes if the amount of seasoning or flavoring is VERY SMALL in comparison to the other ingredients in an item they do NOT have to list it, because the amount used is so small. Usually with a nut product they will list it just to be safe, though.

The bakery did nothing wrong-UNLESS you pre-ordered a cake specifically without almond extract.
But if you did not order a special cake made up ahead of time to your specifications- but just sent your husband to get a random cake, then how could they know?? Next time, order it and be specific about what you want.

Absolutely! Let them know that you have a wasted cake in your fridge that no one is gonna eat and that the label didn't say it had the almond extract.
We as a people should start standing up to all these companies who do us wrong. If more people would do it, they would start raising their standards!

Absolutely take it back, get a refund and tell them to make sure they include ALL the ingredients they used. If I had eaten that cake I would have had an allergic reaction!!

Most grocery stores accept product returns with no problem. I remember one grocery store chain, I think it was Tom Thumb, advertising if you didn't like your Thanksgiving turkey, you could bring back the bag of bones for a refund or something like that. If I didn't like a cake I purchased at a grocery store and knew it would go to waste, I would take it back and ask for a refund or pick out a cake I would like. I'd be very surprised if they gave you a hard time about it, especially if it includes an ingredient that is not listed on the nutrition facts label.

Happy belated birthday!!

Blessings,

can't hurt to take it back. most stores are more interested in keeping your good will than quibbling over a refund. and it stinks to look forward to a cake and not get to enjoy it!

since you know you are especially sensitive to almond extract.... take it upon yourself to ask the bakery if there's almond extract in the product before buying. Tell hubby to ask first when he buys cakes/sweets in the future.

I'm vegetarian and hubs is vegan so I take it upon myself to ask before I buy things, since I'm the one that has a special diet.
Grocery stores/bakeries are always changing up the way they cook things -- costs savings, in response to customer surveys, new partnerships with new ingredient vendors/buyers, so I don't always assume that if I like something once, it'll stay that same exact way the next time I get it.

I do not think you should view it as a complaint. Just take the cake back, tell them you do not care for almond extract and that you would like a replacement one. They would probably give you free pick of one that is equal in value. I think it is more of a pain for you than it is for them. They should have to list almond extract unless they list it under the allergy allert as "Tree Nuts". It is against the law for them not to place it in the ingredients lable unless it is written as tree nuts. So do read the lable before taking it back and telling them you know it is Almond Extract; because if this is a true ingredient and it is not listed, that is a BIG law breaker. So, I guess I am telling you, make sure that is what it is before acusing them of something. That could change the mood of the entire transaction. If you exchange it and say you did not like it is better than saying you KNOW a particular ingredient is in it that is not listed, because that would be accusing them of breaking the law and them loosing their fresh bakery license. So be careful is all I am saying.
Happy Belated Birthday & you should be able to enjoy a cake you did not have to bake.

C.,

There is no need to complain, if this is your regular market (or not), all you need to do is take the cake back and explain the circumstances. They will be glad to replace the cake or give you a refund. It would be good if you had the receipt (especially if this is not your regular store).

Belated happy birthday.

Blessings....
