I took my seven year old to the doctor the other day because reoccuring fevers and headaches and while we there we also mentioned that he has to go pee quite frequently throughout the day. They took blood (everything was fine) and they did a urine culture... which came back with his calcium levels being too high. The doc had us go back this morning for him to give another urine sample and said if that one comes back high we will have to do further testing. Has anyone had this? What could it be? Looking online is just scary, all it talks about is cancer and other scary stuff.

What can I do next?

I had that and it turned out I had a benign growth on my parathyroid. High levels of calcium usually indicate something is going on with the parathyroid.

The best person I know to see is Dr. Edwin Kaplan at University of Chicago. ###-###-####

When I had my surgery I had them freeze a section of the parathyroid because I did not know what could happen to the others - you have 4 of them. They are the size of a pea. And you need a parathyroid to live.

If there is a growth there, it causes havoc on your emotional stability. So be patient with your son. And if something is removed, it takes time for that emotional equilibrium to return. Dr. Kaplan explained everything to me. He is a wonderful person, very kind and personable. Not like most surgeons. And he is head of the department with lots of experience.

He still checks my parathyroid and thyroid every other year and it has been 16 years since I had the surgery.

Hi A.,

I don't have any personal experience with this, but I did find this article on WebMD, which seems to have accurate information on many topics:

It sounds like there's definitely some less-scary stuff it could be than cancer. I'll be thinking about you and your son, hoping for the best!

Dear A.:
I hope you have gotten some better results for your son's high calcium level. I've been a distributor for a nutrition products company for about 4 years now-I don't sell any more but just use the products and pass on info wherever I can. These products are a powder which can be mixed with liquid. The bottom line is that it seems that with optimum nutrition, the body gets balanced out and a lot of things seem to correct themselves. This company is multi level marketing and if one can get past the hipe, the products are great. You might wish to check out
