Has anyone had their child in either the summer 6 weeks/fall 12 weeks program called the Preverbal Communication Program (m-th 9:00-11:30am). This is a program offered by Callier for 18month-3 1/2 year olds in a class-room like setting to promote language development. I have just learned about it and was hoping someone might have tried this program previously with their little one's and might have some feedback to share. Callier has a small blurb of information on their website, and I have read that and have placed a phone call into the speech pathologist that the website refers too, I just thought I try all of you as well....

I took my son there for testing for speech because my son was delayed in speech due to hearing loss due to excessive ear infections which he had tubes put in at 13 months.
We decided to go elsewhere because there was a Very Long waiting list but from what I experienced. I really like them and their techniques.

Hi K., I don't know exactly what the Preverbal Communication program consists of, but my daughter (who is 6 now) went to the Preschool language development program (PLDP) at the UTD Richardson campus for about a year and a half. She had been involved in several different speech programs (private therapy, Baylor Our Children's House, PPCD in Lewisville and Plano, Easter Seals) PLDP BY FAR helped her the most in her speech. I truly believe that b/c of Callier, Mary Beth Schmidtt (lead speech path of PLDP) and the graduate students, Anna was ready for kindergarten and has continued to make great progress in her speech. I honestly cannot recommend the PLDP program enough it is EXCELLENT. We are now doing private therapy there b/c I think so highly of them. Are you referring to the Smile program? I too researched the Callier center (among other things) and spoke to the directors of the program a few times. I've heard nothing but raves and I liked what they had to offer. When I called, there was a waiting list for the summer so he started therapy at Our Children's House at Baylor here in Coppell in March. My ds' ST interned at the Callier Center and worked on the Smile prgram so she also gave me information. I like the approach they use (Hannon) and that OCH also uses this.
I have to say that I've been very very impressed with OCH and the therapists there. I think they're a bit more aggressive compared to other programs and they involve the parents. They are also very very experienced and work with a broad range of children. When I first started researching speech delays, it was really hard. There's a lot of scary/bad information out there that you have to weed through.
We opted not to go through the Smile program this summer when we got the call. The only reason we did this was because mmy ds has improved so significantly that it really wasn't necessary any more. Also, I didn't want to take the spot if someone else needed it more. I don't think you could go wrong sending your child to their program. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.
I am a speech-language pathologist, and received my graduate degree from Callier 15 years ago. I do not think you could go wrong with a Callier Program. Jan Lougeay has been running that program for years - the reason it continues is because it has been so successful. Several of my clients are also involved in Callier programs.

Would you be able to share more?? I don't know at all about that program and have a delayed 2 and a half daughter that I would love to get communicating. We work with ECI and they don't have any worries but it sure would be helpful for her to be able to commuicate better. I've tried sign language and she doesn't really pick it up much at all. I think we've learned 3 signs in the over a year now that we've been trying to show/teach her...
She's also learning spanish at the same time so I'm sure that has something to do with it but she was delayed in walking and several other large milestones so we'd like to get her going on speech as well...
I'd love more info, inparticularly cost if you have any idea...
