Can Breastfeeding Resume After a 5 Day Hiatus?

My baby will be 15 months old in January when I go on a 5 day trip to Mexico without him. I am still breastfeeding and was wondering if I would be able to continue after stopping for those 5 days. I plan on transitioning him to cow's milk during the day next week. So, by January, I will probably be nursing only once or twice a day.

What can I do next?

My answer is the same as Melissa M below. I went on a 5-day trip trip when my child was 14 months and I pumped 1-2 x per day and dumped it in the sink. I wasn't sore at all and there were no embarrassing leak marks. have fun!

My 2 1/2 year old son still nurses twice a day. I recently took two 4 day/3 night business trips without him (and did not pump). In both cases, we just went right back to nursing. The first time, however, he complained that "the nurse is too hard." So, after nursing for a few minutes, he opted just to cuddle, but after that we were back to nromal

I went on a trip when my youngest was 6 months old. I just took a pump with me and pumped and dumped 3-4 times a day. I was able to resume without a problem when I returned. It also helped to avoid the milk explosion that I would have had from stopping cold turkey.

Good luck!

Oh yes! I tried to wean my 20 month old and went out of town for 5 days. He got pneumonia while I was gone and when I got home, that's all he wanted to do was nurse to make him feel better. Once the pneumonia was gone, we weaned successfully.

everyone's boobs have minds of their own so it's hard to state unequivocally. they'll certainly start to dry up and be pretty uncomfortable during your trip. it's also likely they'll be willing to jump-start back in when you return, but if you want to be certain, i'd pump a little once a day. it'll help with engorgement too.
make sure your transition period only starts next week, doesn't happen in one week (it's hard to tell from your post.) start the cow's milk a very very little bit at a time. you've got two months, use them all.
enjoy your trip!

you will need to keep pumping while you're away to maintain production

When my daughter was completely off the breast my milk supply went down in a week. You get horribly engorged and then the supply diminishes and it didn't take very long. If you are transitioning him to regular milk just do that. He'll probably do fine. My daughter didn't seem to care when this happened. If you still want him to have breast milk than you would have to pump. I would not stop even when in Mexico. Hope this helps.

My milk lasted months after my son weened. I'm sure if he would have started suckling again it would have come back to full capacity.
