Can't Seem to Make the Weight Go Away!

I recently had my third child, actually, she just turned 5 months...I have changed my diet(cut out the red meat, fast foods and went from ice cream to yougurt), cut out soda (which I grew up on Mt Dew and Coke), and recently started working out (two weeks with a DVD Power sculpting with Jullian Michaels)...I gained a total of 72 lbs (WOW, I know) and I have only managed to drop about 22 lbs (but the last two months, nothing). I need help, and diet pills don't work either!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I have read all the responses to my "Help Question"! All of it is great. I am going to go to organic foods and maybe step my exercising from a half hour to a hour. In a month, if I don't see any results, I will see the Doctor. After a while, weight gets to a person. It has me. Makes me to where I don't want to leave the house withough covering up from shoulder to toe. I won't wear shorts outside because I feel horrible...I will work on it and see what happens...thank you all very much! I will let you know the progress.....
6/13/2009--I am so upset...I weighed myself after changing my diet to organic...no meats, fresh veggies, fruits, soy milk, and I increased my workout. I did not lose any weight, actually, I gained it. My stomach is bloated and I don't know what to do.

Have you ever tried a low carb diet? I have been on low carb since February and have lost 35 pounds. I do still eat lots of carbs usually every other weekend. It's hard for the first week or so, but its pretty easy. You can eat all the meat, cheese, eggs and lettuce you want, so you never get hungry!

If you're having that much trouble losing weight, you should go to the doctor and have a blood test. There could be a medical problem. I have hypothyroidism, which made me gain & have trouble losing until I got the meds right. It was actually brought on by the pregnancy, I think. I've read that can happen, sometimes temporary, but often permanent. I've lost just over 20 lbs now and am about where I started before getting pregnant. Not as much as you need to lose, but the reasons could be the same. Or it could be something else. But a doctor might be able to find out. And if there's nothing medical causing it, they could even help you come up with a better diet and exercise plan.

i totally understand i gained about 60 lbs. my baby is 3 months old i lost about 35 so far but still have alot to go. i try to walk alot but its hard but keep in there. maybe try a nutricianist i just went to one and they are prescribing me appetite suppresents. but if you do that you still have to exercise cause once you stop it will all come back. it sucks cause after you have a baby its like you have to change your whole life style to exercise and eat right all the time if we want to keep the weight off! well good luck and dont get discouraged!

Hang in there - the body does weird things! Focus on the weight you have lost, because for real, that is GREAT! Think about it, what you HAVE accomplished thus far is losing almost 1/3 of the weight that you gained. A healthy weight loss is an AVERAGE of 1-2 pounds per week, and your current loss falls right at 1 pound a week. It may not sound like much, but that is the right rate to be at if one wants to lose the weight and keep it off.

It didn't appear overnight, and it won't disappear overnight, either, so stick with it and remember that slow and steady does win the race! Don't compare yourself to others' progress or the infomercials you see, either! Your journey is *your own*.

I think you're on the right track with starting to exercise! Remember with that, that you can lose inches and gain muscle, which results in the scales not showing a loss. My suggestion is to take your measurements and keep up with them, once a month or so. Upper arms, chest, waist, hips, thighs. You should start to see a difference!

Hi K.,
I was in the same situation. My son is now 16 months and since Nov 28th I have lost 47lbs. What you are most likely experiencing is a plateau in your workout or you are consuming too many calories.

If you do the same routine for more than 6 weeks, you have to swith it up or inject more exercise into your day because your body acclimates to it. I added in 30-45 minutes of new exercise such as brisk jogging or walking with my son in his stroller. Or in looking at your calories, it might be a pain in the beginning but it will tell you where your hidden calories are throughout your day. Do a food diary for a week. It will do two things: 1) it will encourage you not to snack on stuff because you won't want to write it down, 2) it will remind you of little things you may eat that may make a big difference in your overall calories throughout the day. Calculate your calories per day to ensure you are on track.

Here is a website that can calculate for you how many calories burned in activity and how many calories you need to consume in order to lose or gain weight.

Hi Kathleen,

I know that must be frustrating. I am a competitive race-walker. I shop from a huge private wellness manufacturer in Idaho, Falls Idaho. They have the absolute best health care line out there. They sponsored the US Team for the Winter Olympics. This is what I do that helps me...I eat a patented Access Bar 15 minutes before I work out... It turns fat into fuel!...Only bar that does that! I drink sustained sport(twice the electrolytes as Gatorade, less sugar, and vitamins B, C, and E)during my workout. After my workout, I eat a ProFlex bar. It is the only bar out there that has all 4 types of protein to rebuild muscle after your workout. I also eat Attain Bars in between meals during the day. They have patent-pending craveblocker which makes you feel full. Membership is $14.50 this month until the 20th...that's for the year...although you are not locked into it. They have over 400 exclusive wellness products. Members also have access to a weight-management site that helps with diet and exercise. The product store is http://www.melaleuca.com/ps. All of products are super-concentrated. Pay attention to PC prices. If you are interested, I can refer you to shop there since I am a member. I can take you to a "Delivering Wellness" video pres. online that talks all about the company and products. There is a segment from an Olympic athlete. Have a great day!

Cut out ALL rice, noodles, potatoes . Also no breads or flour products. You will lose the weight. Even if you eat some of these things you may lose a little weight or you may not, just depends on your body. But I do know that you will lose the weight if you don't eat these things. You need to make sure you are eating enough protein. Our bodys run on protein, and people always cut protein out of the diets, instead of carbs.

eat more fresh fruits and veggies, don't look for "magic pills"...
cutting out the soda and the fast foods is great, but what are you eating in its place? what are your portion sizes?you need to make sure you are cutting out the highly processed items that contain ingredient lists as long as from here to china, go with more natural types of foods. don't try those "diets" that promise a quick fix because that is the first sign that it is a hoax.
as far as exercise goes, i know absolutely nothing about the DVD's you've been doing, but i will tell you that you need cardiovascular activity in addition to strength training...4-5 times a week, start with 30 minutes and if you can work up to an hour, that's great.
i have had friends that have been successful with the weight-watchers program...it is a reputable program that shows results. long lasting, healthy weight loss is achieved at the rate of 1-2 pounds per week.
weight loss is a by-product of eating right and exercising, and requires a commitment to just living better...it's a lifestyle change.

Did you lose the weight after your other 2? Are you breast feeding? I wouldn't worry about it. It will come off eventually. (=
I had my 3rd will be a year in July and it's just now slowly coming off, but I haven't or don't exercise on a regular basis. I do plan on eating less once I stop nursing and working out. I think your body just needs time to adjust and get things back to normal. I do think it has taken my body longer the 3rd time around than w/the other 2. I gained 50 w/my first one, 20 w/my 2nd and 45 w/the 3rd one.
I'm thinking about trying Weight Watchers or something where I don't have to starve myself. Sounds like you can eat what you want and still lose weight. I can't cut out everything I enjoy. ha!
Good Luck!! Sydne

After my second I lost about 25 pounds the first two weeks and then nothing until she was almost 6 months (leaving me with 40 left to loose). I ran everyday and dieted and it just wouldn't come off for some reason. I would just keep up your exercise and up the intensity. It's great that you have changed your diet that will help a lot. Also, don't worry about it so much. The stress can increase hormones and keep you from loosing the weight too. And if after a month of consistent exercise there still isn't a difference, I would see your doctor. It might be your thyroid. It is common after pregnancy for people to have their thyroid out of wack. Good luck!

Diet pills never work - they even have it on the label, "use together with healthy diet and exercise". Save your money and just eat right and exercise.
MSG could be your key. If you're buying anything that's processed or contains spice mixes, it probly contains msg too. Scientists use this neurotoxin to fatten up rats for morbid obesity tests. It's also what rest-aurants and food manufact's use to compete with each other. Google it to find out how they sneak it in and read your labels. Also, lower your pasta/bread intake and bulk up on fresh fruits and veggies. Whenever you notice that your weight is "plateuing" (it will after you lose a few pounds), you'll need to kick up your work-out routine a notch - make sure you get a good sweat and that'll help you burn off faster. If you need anymore ideas, just lemme know. Good luck and happy burning! :}
