Car Registration Expired NY

I don't know specifically about NY, but in most states that I know of there is no penalty when you renew. Even when it's renewed late. It is a ticketable offense if you are caught driving with an expired registration.

If NY is like PA you can renew online with a credit card. It will let you print a temporary registration that you can carry in case you are stopped. Your regular one will be sent in the mail within 7-10 days.

Check the NY DMV website for more information. I'd be surprised if they didn't give you the online option.

You can renew it online, but it may take a few weeks for your registration to arrive via mail and you are not suppose to drive that car until you get your registration documents.
If you go to a DMV office, you will get your documents right there.
It doesn't look like they have weekend hours in your area so you'd have to take off work a day to go sometime Mon-Fri.
Your drivers license is not related to your vehicle registration.
You can have a drivers license without even owning a car.

In MN we don't recieve phone calls to remind us to renew our registration...we get a notice via mail. My hubby forgot to renew his one time and got a ticket for a few hundred. If you are really worried don't drive anywhere this weekend and take it in first things monday. I don't think your license has been suspended but maybe NY is much different than MN.

Go in person to get it registered ASAP and maybe you will be lucky and avoid and extra fees or consequences. In NJ many DMV locations have evening hours 1 day a week. You could do it online maybe but in NJ you need the paperwork they sent you to do it.
I got a ticket for expired registration when I first got my car (it was parked on the street--so watch that). But I had it straightened out the same day so I did not have to pay the ticket (I went to traffic court with the documentation). Good luck.

I'm not sure about NY, but in California, if your registration is 3 months past due, the renewal fees will be higher. It goes up a certain percentage of the original fees owed. The longer you wait, the worse it gets.
Just go to the DMV on Monday, pay the fee and they'll give you the new registration and sticker right then and there.

I'm a single mom and my registration was late one time. I actually got pulled over on the freeway for expiered tags the day I was headed to the DMV to pay and get my new registration. I had all my paperwork laying on the seat, I explained that I was on my way.....
The officer literally followed me to the DMV to make sure I was telling the truth. I was....and luckily, I didn't get a ticket.

Just go on Monday and get it taken care of. It will be okay.

Just run to the DMV on Monday. I don't think it will be a big deal. I'm sure people forget all the time. They are supposed to mail you a reminder. I would forget for sure if they didn't send that to me. Obviously they screwed up your reminder somehow.

I didn't get the reminder on renewing my drivers license and drove around for at least 3 months with an expired license. I only found out when I used it for ID at the airport. I sure was hassled there over it - all my luggage was checked and I had to go through special security. There was no problem or penalty renewing it at the DMV, however.

In NY you can renew your registration on line. It usually takes a week to 10 days to get the sticker. Do not drive the car until you get it or you run the risk of getting an expensive ticket. I did the same thing once (forgot to renew for 2 or 3 months) and had no problem doing things on line.

NY is not responsible to notify you of when your registration expires, you are supposed to know that and take care of it. Most times they do, but not always. Especially if you have moved or had a name change.

I think you can also check the status of your license on line. It should be okay but you should check it anyway. And make sure you still have insurance.

If you can not do any of this on line for some reason then take a day off work and get it done at the DVM office. It may cost you a few hours pay but thats better then what it could cost if you get caught in an unregistered car!

In CT they won't renew in person @ the DMV, but there could be an exception if your registration is expired. Check online what it says for NY. Try not to drive until it's renewed - or as little as possible. I'd you get stopped by police w/o a valid registration, they could make you park it or tow it. Happened to me. I was driving a car I had jut bought to get it registered (I was much younger then and didn't know you're not supposed to drive an unregistered car. I thought you actually had to bring it WITH you to register it (LOL!). So I'm in an unfamiliar town trying to find the DMV and got lost. I guess I caught the attention of a police who pulled me over. I explained my situation, learned what a mistake I'd made, and he told me to park the car, call a taxi and come back for the car later. He said if he didn't believe me (I had all the docs w/me), he would gave ordered it towed right there! So I did, and because I was so rattled and anyway strapped for cash (unexpected taxi fare didn't help), I forgot to feed the meter where I had pulled over. So I returned from the DMV w/ my registration only to find a parking ticket to boot! Still cheaper than getting it out of the impound lot, though! LOL
