My little girl is 2 months and hates riding in the car seat. She cries all of the time in it. Have any of you had a baby like this? My doctor said to just keep putting her in there and letting her cry and eventually she will get used to it. She is a baby who can get worked up very easily (she has a little red hair...ha ha)I just thought I would see if you have any suggestions..I am wondering if this is a phase. I have tried pure static on the radio also.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I have found a good static station. I just let her listen to that and my doc said she will just need to cry if that is what it takes to get used to it. It is hard though.

My second daughter did that for the first three months and did not respond to mirrors or mobiles.

It may have been more of a coincidence, but I started putting a blanket on her lap for her to "hold" and keeping a while noise (vacuum cleaner) CD on standby in the car--static did not work for her, either. Between those two things, it did finally get better.

My daughter was the same way. She did not cry until I would put her in her car seat and then she would cry the ENTIRE time we were in the car. I heard that classical music would help, so desperate to try anything, I bought a Beethoven CD. It worked!! She is now nine and she still enjoys classical music. Hope this helps!

My daughter has the same issue and once we put her in a Britax car seat she began to sleep more peacefully in the car. The seat is much more cushiony and sits at a slightly different incline. Perhaps it was the plush that she liked or maybe the incline relieved some pressure from gas pains. The weight range starts as little as 5 lbs and I believe goes up to 65 lbs. Ours is still rear facing and fits just fine in a Nissan Maxima. The cost is high; however, quite worth it for a little peace in the car:)

Both of mine were the same way. I think it is because of sitting backwards that bothers them. Anyway, I had to kind of ride it out until they got a little older and could entertain themselves with toys. Got a car mirror for my son, that didn't help any, though he would calm down for a little bit if I played the radio lound. Nothing worked for my daughter.

I have three children, all three different. My first child I bought every single top of the line toy. Which she used about half, the second ironically used the others. My second child never really liked being on his back?? He did not like sitting under the toys, in his boucer, and of course the carseat. Maybe if you did get a Britax it would sit her up alittle straighter so she would not be so unhappy? I just bought a Britax Marathon from albee-baby online. It is $219.99 including tax and shipping right now!! I can't wait to get it as I had to buy 2, saving over $100 off babies r us!! I hope she feels better soon!

Hi L.,

Both of my kiddos were like this....they screamed and screamed until I took them out of the car! In our situation, it was a phase that they eventually outgrew by 3 mo old. Good luck!

My daughter was like this until about 4 months old. I know how frustating it is! I worked so getting in the car was not an option. I found that if I cracked the windows a little bit to let that noise through she normally calmed down. Good luck!

My son did the same thing, in his infant car seat. We finally started putting him in his regular carset (it doesn't matter what size they are in for that). The infant seat was just easier for us to tote around and it gave him some where to sit when we went in places. Once I switched him out of this he did great! I couldn't believe the difference. We also just recently got a portable DVD player and for long car rides it is a life saver-well worth the money for us!

Hope that helps.

Hi L.,
This happened with our son when he was 2 months old too. He just grew faster than we could keep up with. We changed the settings on his harness and moved the head rest cushion up to make more room for his head. This helped ALOT! We also realized that he was just too hot, so we put him in less clothing. You may want to think about getting an remote starter put on the car to cool it down before you even get in. I think they are about $100 and make an excellent birthday/anniversary gift.
Good luck!I hope this helps!

My little guy was the same way. When he was born we lived out in east texas and it took us about 30 to 40 minutes to get anywhere and he would scream the entire time. He hated it. I hated it as well because with him being a newborn and you know we hate to hear them cry and then when they are really worked up it was hard. We bought one of those things that would hang off the handle of the carseat it seemed to help a bit but it was something he just had to get use to. When he was about 2 or 3 months we moved to Colorado and we had to drive there. He did really well. I guess by that time he got use to it. Good luck!

Just a phase- dont worry- Have you tried hanging anything from the window that may distract her. mobile type thing-Also, maybe don't feed her right before a car ride- Maybe her belly is nauseous- trust me Im 45 and I still get car sick- If I had to ride backwards- forget it.ha! Pop a
t-shirt with your scent in with her to maybe comfort her a bit- Does she use a binky? (pacifier) Forget the static- maybe some classical to soothe- Good luck- something will work for sure
I love being a mom- I have the best of both worlds 13 yr old girl and 17 yr old son- It goes by WAY too quick especially after they turn into teenagers.
When he was like 3 - he loved books in the car. You are smart to reach out for opinions-

My daughter is a little over 6 months old and she has always hated riding in the car seat. I've tried everything - toys, a mirror - everything. And still she just cries to the point of coughing and turning red. I finally just decided that if I can't get everything done when I have someone who can watch her at home, I try to do as little driving as possible - I go to a grocery store that's VERY close to my house for example and when we're in the store I carry her in my arms or in a sling. I'm not real big on making her cry it out in the car - I just hate to hear her cry!

It's a phase. Make sure you're not putting her in the car right after a feeding though. It could upset her tummy.

Definitely a phase. My ds hated the car seat a lot of times and would scream and scream when I tried to go places. I'm very anti-cio, but this was something I figured was non-negotiable since he HAS to sit in the car seat and I wasn't going to be a prisoner in the house waiting for my dh to come home so I could drive somewhere.

I tried taking him out every day starting with short trips to get him more used to the trip. I'd build up over time. It got better, but my ds definitely preferred being forward facing when the time came. I have a jetta and I think he couldn't see a whole lot when he was backwards and he's very interested in things as a general rule.

It gets better. I know how awful it felt to listen to him scream and I felt like such a bad mom. Try and not take it personally.

I definatly feel your pain. We used to call our chair the "chair of despair". My daughter would just sceam and scream. It was hart breaking and nerve racking. The only thing that seemed to help was one of those infant insert things. This one was by Koala and was sheep skin on one side and black on the other. Im not sure is it was the soft of the sheep skin or the cuddly snuggness of the insert but it really seemed to work. We had tried others befor just for positioning, but this one really worked. In fact as she grew I had to slowly take it away, starting with just the head piece, and then the body piece. She got upset the first times I tried to take them off, but eventually she got over it. Hope this helps.

Hi L.,
We had the same problem w/ our baby girl at the exact same age...although it's no fun (I used to be a wreck by the time we arrived to our destination!), I heard then that it was common. For us, there really was no way to get her to like the car, and we tried various things. We just eventually tried to avoid taking her on car trips unless it was necessary, like my hubby did the grocery shopping, and the fam came to us to visit, etc... It lasted until she was around 3-4 months. But it does get better! If your doc has ruled out health concerns like reflux and so on, then I wouldn't worry. Pretty soon she may be three like mine and waking you up first thing in the morning before you've had a chance to even think about a cup of coffee asking "wake up mommy, where are we going today?"... ;o)

Hang in there!
K.

Do you have a mirror in the back? My son enjoyed looking at himself while he was back there.
