I use a Hoover steam cleaner and diluted Quick N Brite with VERY hot water in it. Takes away the dirt, stains, and smells and what residue it leaves behind vacuums up. I've tried Bissell liquid but it always leaves a residue that attracts dirt on my carpets and the stains just don't seem to come out. (Quick N Brite can be found at the As Seen on TV store or at www.quicknbrite.com.)

Buy a carpet cleaner. We have the Hoover Spin'nScrub. It's been a lifesaver with kids and pets and has paid for itself many times over. You may still want to hire a professional every few years, but we use our cleaner about once a month and I definitely can't afford a professional that often.

I rented a machine at Lowe's. Very labor intensive but I was very happy with the results.

Whatever you do, don't use water to clean your carpets. It damages the backing and melts the glue holding the fibers in place, especially if the water is hot.

The best I've found is Right Away Carpet Dry Cleaning. They use an organic dry cleaning material that is so safe you could literally eat it. They scrub it into the carpet, let it sit for a few hours and then vacuum it up. Works great, smells great (like oranges) and the carpet is dry and ready to use right away. Their number is 877-607-4448. The owner is Eddie and he is the nicest guy on earth!

I steam my carpets about every 2 weeks or so (I'm anal, I know). I have the Hoover steamvac and I love it! I also use it to steam the mattresses, couches, kid chairs, etc.

I just rented a rug Dr. for $25 and it got my "brown" pop tart stained carpet white again! The trick I use, is instead of hot tap water like they suggest, is to use boiling water and clean in slow stokes. I did use professional cleaning solution but have used the other kind you can buy in a store and that works just fine also. But the boiling water imo is what helps out the best.

I have a Bissel Carpet Cleaner. It was cheaper, about $70 or so, and used some of its cleaner it has, and used it on my carpets many times. It works great, and cleaned all the stains out my carpets.

You could hire someone to do it for you, but that would cost easily over a $100, or you could buy one yourself and do it for cheaper and you can use it whenever you need it.
