Carpet Cleaners vs Renting a Steam Cleaner

I made an appointment to have my carpets cleaned but then started to think that it was a lot of money to clean two bedrooms, one closet and 2 area rugs so I thought maybe I would just rent a steam cleaner and do it myself. My carpet is very old (it should be replaced but with 2 little kids I'm not in a rush to replace it) so I don't care too much what happens to it but it has a lot of stains. Has anyone ever rented a steam cleaner? Was it worth the savings or more of a hassle than it was worth? Where did you rent it from? Thank you for your time and comments!

So What Happened?

It's been unanimous that it's not worth my time and effort to try and do it myself. I kinda thought that might be the case. I'll keep my appointment with professionals. They've been to my house 2x before so I know they do a good job. Thanks so much for all your input.

Honestly, I found steam cleaners to not be that good. I have done everything from renting them then having a service doing it. I haven't been impressed. I do have my own Bissel but it doesn't do so good. I actually hire these guys named ChemDry that do a fantastic job and are well worth the money. However, your carpet sounds lke it needs more restoration than just cleaning. Look into a service. They have huge scrubbers and can do the job in a fraction of time and get the carpet much cleaner. I know it costs some money but time is money. If you spent hours doing it yourself- that is time missed out with the kids. That's how I look at it.

Hi Laurie,
My advice would be let the cleaning company do it...unless you're Wonder Woman with a back of steel! I soooo messed up my back cleaning my carpet with one of those things...
Just a thought!

Nope, not worth the hassle. Professionals are pretty cheap these days; I'd hire one. Good luck!

My time is worth money and I have spent days cleaning the carpet with the rented cleaners. I can tell you that you will get better results with a professional. Think about the equipment they use, they have powerful suction from a much bigger motor and they have a much higher grade of cleaner. I would definantly look around for a better deal on the price but I wouldn't cut too many corners when I t comes to the floor the kids are on all day.

I'm actually thinking the opposite! I've seen commercials for carpet cleaning companies that have great specials (like 5 areas plus a hall for $99), and I'm considering doing that next time. We've rented the cleaners before, and my DH has done it himself. But with the cost of the shampoo and renting it, it's really not that much cheaper. I would rather pay someone to do it. But if you choose to do that, the Kroger by our house rents them, and so does our Big Lots. Walmart probably has them, too.

Go with a professional. Look for specials. The cost is probably a wash by the time you add the machine, shampoo, your time, etc.
