Carrying My Big 3 Year Old, Pain in the Neck (Hahahaha)

Hi, all,

A few months ago, I hurt my shoulder and probably my neck while swinging my big 3 year old into his carseat. I learned that I can't carry him so much, so he gets in/out of the carseat on his own, walks wherever we go... for the most part. I never stopped carrying him completely, though. A couple of months later, my neuro guy told me that he suspected a herniated C6. I never got the neck MRI that he prescribed; I was no longer in pain after a lot of rest from an unrelated surgery. This weekend, I was on my feet, lifting a lot of stuff for a garage sale. My neck is really hurting me. So, obviously, whatever was hurt earlier this year didn't heal on its own!

I have always carried my son, we have a family bed, he's my snuggler. I decided today that I have to stop carrying him. How the heck do I do this?????

Secondly, what should I do for my neck? I can move my head all around, although I have pain with certain angles. I don't want it to get worse, but will it get better with rest? Have you used a chiropractor, or is physical therapy better? I would like to avoid surgery.

Thank you in advance!

What can I do next?

This happened to me before our daughter was born. Once she weighed 20 lbs, I could not carry her any longer. Thank goodness she walked really early. I used the stroller a lot and she always climbed into her car seat.

At the grocery store. Sometimes, I would have to ask someone to help me lift her into the cart and help her lift out.

Just tell him the truth." Mommy has hurt her back and the doctor says I cannot carry you anymore." "Do you want to hold my left hand or my right hand? "

"I can give you a hug, but I cannot lift you up." I need your help carrying this bag. The doctor says I cannot carry heavy things any more. "

"Let me sit down and you can carefully sit on my lap. "
"Please be soft and gentle with mommy, I have a hurt neck. "
"Please give me a soft hug today, my neck is really hurting today."

Also I was sent to a "Back School" They taught me how to sit, stand walk, lift, clean.. all sorts of ways to keep a healthy and strong back..

Definitely do not go for surgery until you have exhausted other remedies! You could do chiropractic - if so, you could look for someone who does applies kinesiology or a similar "gentle" form. The sudden back-cracking scares me and some people have problems with it.

You could also go to a good massage therapist - not the comforting massage at a day spa, but a real therapist, who will be able to determine how much muscle problem is involved vs. vertebrae. Chiro works well with massage - one person should be able to refer you to the other, and some work together in one practice.

I don't think physical therapy is so great, at least not until the actual problem is identified.

My husband and I were in a car crash, and he was in a 2nd one on his own. Rear-ended both times - so lots of neck & shoulder problems. I've had great results with a nutritional supplement that has had clinical trials for healthy bone/joint function. There's also a great one for muscle repair and recovery. A lot of massage therapists and chiropractors I work with employ these in their practices. My doctor and my husband's doctor both endorse it and are thrilled with what's happened for us.

Definitely go to a chiropractor...The one I go to is also a physical therapist also and very good. He uses electric stimulation and I always feel 100% better when I leave. He also doesn't keep you coming back for the rest of your life as some do. He just has you return until your problem is fixed which may only be 3 or 4 times. Name is Dr. John Hayes in Glen Ellyn. ###-###-#### (I think) Anyway he's listed...on Taft in Glen Ellyn.
