Carseat for Super Tall Baby

I am looking for car seat suggestions for a super tall baby girl. We will need 2, so I don't want to spend a ton of money, but I want this to be her last car seat. She is 7 months old and 30". My son is 3 and only 36", so this is a major adjustment for us!

Any tips?

ETA: Part of the problem I am running into is the fact that they *say* 50" or whatever, but that means forward facing and we have a LONG time before we are ready to do that. I need like 40" rear facing. Also, weight limits mean nothing to us because my daughter is proportional to an adult, not a typical baby.

What can I do next?

We have the FirstYears TrueFit and my 3.5yr old daughter is 37" tall and 29lbs and she's able to easily rear face in it. Its a great car seat and one of the tallest on the market. In fact my 47" tall 5.5yr old is able to use the seat forward facing with room to grow. Another option for a tall kid is the AirProtect.

a rear facing car seat is outgrown when the child reaches the rear facing weight limits or the child has less than 1" of hard shell above the head. Unless one of these has been reaches the child is not too tall to rear facing. When rear facing the harness should be just at or below the shoulders.

Both my boys were 33-4" tall at a year old. They were big boys! Both slowed down considerably on the growth and are both average heights now at 8 and 5.

Anyway, the TrueFit is a great seat, with an antirebound bar for rear facing which is great! It will rear face to 35lbs and forward face to 65lbs, and fits most kids rear facing to age 3/4, and forward facing to age 6/7.

Look at Sunshine Kids car seat brand.

The Sunshine Kids Radian has one of the tallest shells, so that would keep her rear facing for a long while.

note: While the Graco nautilus is a great seat and will keep your DD harnessed for a long time, it is not rear facing and wouldn't be applicable to your current situation.

If you are on facebook, "like" the "car seat lady" and ask her. She's the guru! I think she usually recommends the Radian XTSL (not sure I got the letters in the right order) for tall kids. I know Kohl's had a 30% off coupon on lately that applied to this seat as well. NEVER buy a used seat, as someone else said. Also, if you want this to be your last and only seat, you might be prepared to spend a bit more $. It's easy to get a cheaper good seat that will only last a year or 2, but hard to find a good one that rear faces and will last until you are done that doesn't cost $$$. Really, your child's safety is worth it! If you can't afford it right now, maybe look into one that is cheaper but won't last as long and then buy a harnessed booster later (after age 4).

Britax will take her to 65", if you do not mind used, $100 on craigslist.

I have recently asked 2 questions like this, check them out. Everyone really reccomended Britax, they are expensive but I now know they will really hold my kids until they are 70lbs and 49 inches. Others claim to do this, but I wouldn't be looking for a new seat for my 3 year old if it were true.

I second the Britax, but I would NOT buy used. You have no idea what conditions it's been in and if it's been in accident. Once it's been in one, it should get destroyed and never used.
I bought my britax for half of on ebay. Brand new. I got it for $170. Britax is the best in my opinion. Has the best reputation and quality.
If you don't want to get that, then I would suggest the Graco Natalus (sp?) It's the only American brand I would suggest. The other have lower quality of plastics and fabrics. I used to work at Babies R Us and we had more returns on Evenflo, Baby Trend, Costco, Eddie Bauer (which is just a costco with his name slapped on). Britax is European designed ( but made here!). Europeans have higher safety standards than we do. Graco is trying to match.

We bought a full size carseat that had rear facing holes and it was so big it wouldn't fit in our car, we had to only use it in the van with the passenger seat up all the way. We got it at Walmart.

I suggest the Learning Curve First Years True Fit. It has a head rest that you attach for taller children and it can be used rear facing the car seat is also rated rear facing until 35lbs. They are about $135 - $150 on Wal-Mart's website and you can have it shipped site to store for free.

You might also want to check out the Sunshine Radian car seat, a bit more expensive but also nice.

You're so lucky! You have my 7mo old, but 8 years ago (when my son was 7mo and also about that length - 23.5" when born, and has only kept growing! At 8 he's 5' tall)... they didn't have carseats in this country that could fit him. We had to go FF at 6mo, and no more 5 point before he was 18mo.

Britax.
