My doctor says once a child reaches 40 pounds then they can move onto a booster. He also says it really depends on the child. My son is 4 and weighs 45 pounds but is to wild to use a booster seat yet. He likes to unbuckle himself. I'm not ready to move him.

Hi D.,

Most carseat/booster seat requirements are based upon weight/height and not age. My daughter is almost three and she will probably not be ready for a booster for several months. The seats I have checked into require at least a 36" height requirement and the child must weigh 40 lbs. My daughter is definitely tall enough but does not come close to 40 lbs yet. Most kids go into a booster around the age of 4.

You can google booster seats and most manufacturers will have all the specs and requirements right on their website relating to each individual seat.

Good luck.

It's 40 lbs for most of them and definitely closer to age four than three.

D., I've always heard that 40 pounds is when it's okay to use a booster as long as it still uses a harness. Then you can switch out of the harness at 65 pounds. If I'm wrong, someone correct me please! :)

As far as I know it depends on their weight. You have to look at the individual manufacturer's specification for weight. We moved my son into a booster at 35 lbs, but most are rated for 40 lbs. It is always safer to keep them in a regular carseat, but if they get tall that gets difficult. Hope that helps!

I didn't move my daughter to a booster until she was almost 4 because she was sort of small. I kept her in a booster with a back on it until just recently and now she's six. She just wasn't tall enough to not have the back with the seatbelt pin on the side. I guess it really just depends on the child. My daughter is only 43 pounds so I son't take her out of booster until she's at least 50 pounds. If he's a good size and weight then you can take him out of the carseat now. I'd say about 30-35 pounds. I'd ask your pediatrician.

I recently read that it is recommended that children stay in a 5 point harness until 3 even if they are over 40lbs. If over 40lbs and over 3 they can go into a booster. There are carseats that are 5 point harness for children over 40 lbs such as Britax. However, I found that the Fisher Price Safe Voyage carseat goes up to 65lbs. and it is similar to the Britax marathon. As a matter of fact the registration card that you send in goes directly to Britax-not Fisher Price. The Britax are around $250. The Fisher Price Saftey Voyage is at Albee Baby for $130.

For my boosterseat the requirements are 30 lbs and 38 inches. It depends on the seat you buy, some are for 40 pounds and taller.

I saw some recent research that recommends children stay in a 5 point harness until 80 pounds. There is a video floating around you tube of a family that lost their son who was in a booster seat because the car's seatbelt failed to hold the booster seat. Britax carries a seat called the Regent that will hold kiddos up to 80lbs.

Some people tell me it is better to keep in the carseat than a booster seat. i think the booster seat goes by height and weight.

It depends on the brand/make. We have a Britax which is good after using Infant Car Seat (20lbs) to 100lbs.

It all depends on the childs weight. I looked up a web site that explains the weight for each child seat. It is http://phoenix.about.com/od/parenting/a/childseat.htm

Infant Seats
Birth to age one, designed for children from 7 to 20 pounds
Infants should be in a reclined infant car seat or convertible seat in the infant position to protect the delicate neck and head. All straps should be pulled snugly. The car seat must face the rear of the car and should never be used in a front seat where there is an air bag. The infant must face the rear so that in the event of a crash, swerve, or sudden stop, the infant’s back and shoulders can better absorb the impact. Household infant carriers and cloth carriers are not designed to protect an infant in a car and should never be used.

Convertible Seats
7 to 40 Pounds
The convertible car seat is placed in a reclined rear-facing position. After children reach at least 1 year and 20 pounds, the convertible seat can be turned forward and placed in the upright position in the back seat of the vehicle.

Booster Seats
40 to 60 Pounds
When a child reaches about 40 pounds she will outgrow the convertible seat. Either a belt positioning (backless) or high-back booster seat can be used with a lap/shoulder belt in the back seat of the vehicle.

Buckle Up Baby Campaign
If you see a vehicle transporting a child under the age of 5 who is not properly restrained, you are encouraged to call the "Buckle Up, Baby" hotline: 1-800-505-BABY. When calling, leave the following information:
1. Vehicle license number and state
2. Where the vehicle was seen
3. Where the child was sitting in the vehicle

The purpose of the program is not to punish, but rather to inform. When the Police Department receives this information from you, they will send a packet of information to the owner of the vehicle. The materials describe the hazards of transporting unrestrained children under the age of 5, and encourages the owner to purchase a child restraint system. No one else is notified, and the car owner doesn't get in any trouble and is not fined. It is hoped that they will use the information to obtain the proper equipment for the vehicle and the child.

Arizona participates in a program entitiled "Children Are Priceless Passengers" whereby for $25 you can attend a two-hour training session on child seat safety. The C.A.P.P. Program offers child safety seat classes at locations around the Valley. Classes are instructed by NHTSA certified technicians. If you have received a citation for not having your child properly restrained, you may have some or all of the violation removed after attending the class. If you don't own a car seat, you might be given one at the training session. Sessions are avaliable in English and Spanish at the folowing locations:

The laws vary by state, to be honest, but they have gotten stricter over the years. I believe the child needs to be 30 pounds to sit in a booster seat. I know I had all three of mine in boosters by the age of 2, but they were also all big kids. I know that it is rear facing in a tilted seat up to 20 lbs, and they can graduate out of a booster or car seat when they are 7 or 70 lbs. Also you could try googling "Car Seat Requirements by State" and see what comes up!

Good luck!

I personaly have my daughter in a Britex booster and did not put her in it till she was 4 years and 40lbs. The Britex is great because it still has the full back and it also has the head protected as well. It looks like a 5 point seat but is not. My daughter loves it too for when she falls asleep (which she does all the time.) she is supported.

Per AZ Law.

Booster Seats
40 to 60 Pounds
When a child reaches about 40 pounds she will outgrow the convertible seat. Either a belt positioning (backless) or high-back booster seat can be used with a lap/shoulder belt in the back seat of the vehicle.

Here is the article that I found to get this information.
