Cats and Carpet?

Anyone have any suggestions on how to get as much cat hair out of carpet as possible? Also we seem to have a ton of littler in the carpet...you can hear it when you vacuum? I have a Dyson and I feel like it does a great job but if you run your hands over the carpet in a circular motion you end up with a fur ball and it is grossing me out or you find cat litter. Any suggestions would be great.

I did just purchase a Bissell carpet cleaner (hot water kind) that I was going to try but has anyone had trouble using something like this on a carpet with hair and/or litter?

What can I do next?

The hair isn't great for the BIssell. It will collect on the edges of the brush. You'll have to stop periodically and pull it off (which is a little gross). Every once in a while, parts of that collected hair will fall off on to the carpet and you'll need to pick it up by hand. And you have to be careful, it can clog some of the sprayers. Bissell recommends vacuuming thoroughly before steam cleaning. We have a dog who sheds a lot. I haven't found any tricks of the trade except to vacuum more frequently. I vacuum every other day here, but I should probably do it daily if I want to eliminate the dog hair. I looked into the pet dyson, but it's the same motor, just with extra filters. I know two people who bought and returned them because they were no different than their regular dyson. I'll be checking your post to see if anyone has any great tricks.

And this is one more reason I don't have carpet.

When I had carpet I would dampen a towel and rub it over the carpet. I must warn you it is gross what you will pull up. Oh that would be another reason the carpet had to go.

The final straw was when the cat started using the dining room as a littler box. :(

Personally I love my shop vac for heavy cleaning of a concentrated area like around a cat's box.

I actually have been known to sweep the carpet before vaccuming. It seems to loosen up pet fur and hair making it easier for the vaccum to get it.

I only have a shop vac. Which means vaccuming more labor intensive?

It's a rubber carpet sweeper and it does a great job at pulling up that cat hair! My advice, don't sweep too fast. It makes the rubber bristles wear out due to friction. Easy sweeps and you'll be grossed out at how much hair comes up!!
