Central Air Quit Working

I came home from work yesterday and it was 110 degrees outside. When I had been in the house for a little while I thought it felt awfully warm so I started checking around and out air quit! I called for a repair man and had to go to the after hours number. The lady told me they would have someone call within the hour to find out where they needed to come. They didn't call back until 9:30 and then said they couldn't come until this morning. They told me to call back and get put on the list for this morning, so I did that. Then this morning I call again to set up the time and the lady says, "Oh, well we can't get to you until tomorrow afternoon!" UGH!!!!!! I'm so frustrated! I have checked the breakers, the filters, reset the unit itself, and the fan on the outside of the house still won't work. There is nothing i can do but wait. Have any of you ever had this happen before? What about the fan thing on the outside of the house? Have you had to have that repaired? I am freaking out a little because I am worried about how long the repair will take. I called three other companies this morning and think someone is going to come late this morning. We are misserable, and I am stressed out not knowing what I am in for in terms of getting this repair done and paid for. :(

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank God! I feel blessed! I called a couple other companies and found one that would come late this morning. The air is back on and now we are just trying to give it time to catch up since the house had gotten so hot. I am thankful for every bit of progress it makes.
Praise the Lord for getting us through this. I was SOOOOOOOO stressed out! I hope you all stay cool and your AC keeps doing its job.

I'd say call them back & remind them that it's 110 degrees outside & it's going to be on them if you die of heatstroke...not to mention any pets you may have. Tell them if they don't get someone out there TODAY you're going to call someone else, then do it if they don't get you any satisfaction. Tell them you can't be on their beck & call having to take off work, that you can't just take off work day after day expecting the repair just for it not to happen...Good luck.

If you have little ones, consider a hotel stay. Also, if you have anyone in your house who is elderly or otherwise health challenged. I'm in FL, had this happen with a 10 week old and accidentally allowed him to get overheated. I didn't know that they can't swear at that age. He is fine - but it was scary.

the outside part of the unit should also have a reset button on it. If it's been hot and humid you might have frozen up your evaporator. If your filter is dirty make sure you change it. Turn everything off, push all the reset buttons, change your filter, check all the pipes to make sure they arent frozen, check all the brakers to the unit. It will probably be sort of expensive, so be prepared. Make sure to stay by the repairman and have him explain whats really going on.

The fan outside is your compressor, just saying.

My AC always seems to call it quits in the summer. Yeah you have to wait a few days. In my case it was a week and a half for parts.

You open up all your windows. Beg your family for any box fans they own and don't move unless your life is in danger.

At our old house in Sacramento (rental) our AC would quit whenever it got over about 102! The unit was overheating and shorting the circuit or something.

It sounds like you already tried this, but if you haven't (or even if you have, maybe now that it's cooler), go to your breaker box. Shut off all the electricity then turn it back on. Might be worth turning the whole house off and on just to be sure you get the right one.

I really hope this helps! No AC is no fun.

You can try calling other repair folks, but do NOT gripe out any of them or you could be on a much longer wait list! I'd say they are very busy with a lot of overworked units due to this heat. Be nice and hopefully that will help you keep at the top of the list! Also remember, the repairman may well have to be out in the heat to fix it - offer him some cold lemonade or sweet tea if it takes very long to do the repair!

(and I feel for ya - had to have a repair on our unit where the stupid dog chewed the insulation and disconnected a wire about a month ago...grrr dog! and we did have the furnace go out in dead of winter one year - they were finally putting new one in on coldest day at that time)

Last year our hot water heater broke. It took the repair man 17 days to get it completely fixed.
I have no advice just wanted to commisserate. :o)
If you dont get air today, go to a hotel tonight.

Yes, the friday before 4th of july, when it was 105 outside. I came home from work and turned on the air and it never got any colder. After 2 hours of the temp rising inside I called a repair company. They sent someone out sat am ( cost a LOT) and turns out the motor was burned out. Because it was a holiday weekend we had to wait until the following thursday for a replacement part, of course the temp never got below 101 during the day. We ended up going to a hotel we could not stay in a 100degree house. Luckily our motor was under warranty ( our home is only 4 yrs old) so all we had to pay for the service calls. Once you get a repairman out there it may not take long at all, it could be something he could fix in a few minutes or the next day just depending on parts. Try calling the mfg of your a/c and see who they recomend, thats how we found our repairman and since he was factory certified he was able to get parts sooner.
I hope your a/c is fixed soon. I know how much it stinks to not have a/c in that kind of heat
