If it is a Vista Academy.....they are very successful.
Has anyone had any experiences with a charter school vs. a public school? My grandkids are in 2nd & 3rd grade in DISD, and there is a free charter elementary school at a nearby church. Just wondering what the difference would be.

I don't have personal experience but I can share what I've heard from others. Charter schools tend to have smaller classes and better teacher/student ratios. Many have better academic success but of course that depends on the school (there are some great public schools too). If you have a child who needs special services then you'll need to check to be sure that the charter school can meet those needs. Generally charter schools don't have as many resources when it comes to special education. Hope that helps.
as far as i know the classes are smaller. i have brothers-in-law that go to a charter in rowlett. they left royse city schools and so far so good.
my nephew goes to a charter school in dallas in friendship baptist, this may be the school you are talking about.
this is his first year and they are really liking it.
it was a private school and the principal is the same. great guy. i'm surprised more people don't put their kids in charters. i think it's more word of mouth and not a lot of people know about them.
Hello! A charter school is a public school (i.e. they receive public funds, cannot charge tuition, and, in the state of Texas, must be open enrollment), and they must teach the TEKS, but they have more flexibility in curriculum and hiring practices than a regular public school. Charter schools get less than 2/3 the public funds of a regular public school, though, so many do a lot of fundraising.
You really can't lump all charter schools together, because they differ substantially in curriculum, philosophy, and management. Some are excellent and others are terrible. Maybe you can sit in on a class or talk to parents to find out more about the one you are interested in?
