Our house was built in 1978 and our master bathroom is very smalll. The sink/vanity and storage cabinets are by themselves and then a door closes off to the toilet and bath tub/shower. I want to give it a cheap makeover to brighen it up. Does anyone have advice on painting the vanity and sink, not the cabinets. I know how to do that part. I've just never had any experience painting a vanity and wanted to see what works best. Any help and ideas are greatly appreciated

What can I do next?

Before you try to paint the vanity, you need to determine what is on there now. If it's wood, you're going to have to remove any finish, old polish, varnish, etc. And rough it up with sandpaper. Tell the guys in the paint dept. what is on there, take pix with you & they can tell you what type of paint would be best. For example, if there is oil-based paint on there now, you cannot use latex pain on top--it will bubble.

As for the sink--you're going to paint the actual sink? Smallish new sinks and faucets aren't that expensive, so I would probably replace the sink and hardware for a nice update!

You can get a small Euro style vanity for $100 at Lowes. That is super cheap for a whole new look and it is a heck of a lot easier than painting.

I probably wouldn't opt to paint the vanity I would probably look into getting a new vanity or even a simple pedestal sink. If that was too much money for me to spend I would go for painting the walls something dramatic to take the focus off the sink or even using decorative items around the sink that would serve the same purpose.

Painting furniture can get tricky especially furniture in the bathroom where water and moisture are in abundance.

My cheap bathroom remodel ended up costing us $8k and my husband about lost it when I told him how much we had spent. I only had $10k to do both bathrooms so needless to say only one got redone. :( We had a horrible contractor who doubled his price as the work went. It also took 4 months to complete.

Depending on the type of material, the vanity can be resurfaced for a cheaper price than replacing. A friend of mine did this and the results were amazing. Not sure who does that sort of thing, but you can bing and then go to Angies list to find a good contractor.

I have the same bathroom. I took out the wall and the door, opening it all up. Mine was a load bearing wall so I didn't take out the WHOLE wall. Just from the door jam down. It makes it much bigger looking.
I want to take out my vanity and put in a small sink, and then a tall cabinet for towels and whatnot. I hate having stuff UNDER the vanity in the dark, in the back, unable to reach, blah blah blah.

I was watching a DIY show over the weekend and they re-glazed bathroom tiles rather then replacing them. You don't say what your vanity is made out of so it's hard to say what to use to paint it. For the sink, I would go to the hardware store and see if the stuff for reglazing tiles will work for the sink. Good luck!

There is a Habitat for Humanity resale place in McKinney or Allen I think. Extremely well priced stuff. Check it out

How cheap? Some things can make it worse. If I could wrap my brain around the actual layout I could probably come up with something major and cheap. Like a door separating half my bathroom wouldn't have lasted more than a day. I like open spaces. :)
