Hi! I am currently coaching 9 girls for cheerleading for basketball teams on Saturdays. Our third game is this Sat. I am not an experienced cheerleading coach. I noticed the girls were not paying much attention to the game on Sat between cheers so I had an idea. What if I gave a prize to the girl that came the closest to the number of baskets scored. My goal is that when they were not cheering they would make sure to "cheer" everytime one of the basketball players made a basket. My question is what to give as the prize? Looking for some creative inexpensive ideas-keeping in mind I will need it this Sat:)

Thanks sooooo much!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

A big thank you to everyone who replied to my request. Well the game was Sat and the girls did the bet job ever cheering for the players scoring baskets. So I'm thinking the incentative worked. Problem was that two girls knew the total an I had only purchased one gift card. I should have known better. I told the two girls I would have thier prize for them on Tuesdays practice. Looks like I'll need to run out and purchase another gift card. The pizza party gave me a great idea to have at my house for the girls at the end of the season:)

yeah K. i think that is a good idea, i would also think that if they cheer really well, you can have a pizza party, or if you want to buy one of the girls a present, webkinz is really hot, they also have webkinz jr. webkinz is a stuffed animal that you enter the code online, and giving a gift to one, could cause others not to cheer, and it could have everyone cheering all the time, which you will end up in a mass tie, ahahah any way, i would do a group gift more so, like the pizza party, but yeah a gift would work, but could back fire on yah might have to try different things, webkinz are like 10 -15 dollars, and can be found at hallmark stores and some at walgreens, either way have fun, and enjoy life, D. s

Gift cards are always good. To movies, claires, bookstore, manicure etc. Or a basket filled with girlie goodies.

Have Fun!

When I cheered, we were expected to go a jump of some kind everytime a basket was scored, if we did not, we had to do 5 jumps at practice for each one we missed. We could decide which one to do but everyone had to do one. Good luck!

As for a prize for the # of baskets you could do a hair bow or something to match their uniform that they could wear at the next game.

Maybe try little foam megaphones and write their name on it and glue a little piece of curling ribbon behind it so they can hang it up. (I'm sure you can get the foam pieces from any craft store) I think they have little (& cheap) cheerleading things at Michaels. Good Luck!!

3rd to 6th grade girls huh? lipgloss, nail polish, suckers, stickers, if you are a real creative crafy type person, you could make up some kind of beaded pin thing (you can get a million ideas somewhere like michaels) And it could be like the "spirit award" the winner wears it at the next game, and then it moves on...

Wow, I think the free incentives idea is a great one! What I was going to suggest would be for you to check out the Dollar Spot at Target. They have some cute and inexpensive things there. Good luck!

I use to work in the fundraising industry. We often encouraged our coaches who were asking their kids to fundraise to use incentives. My favorites were those that cost nothing. Things like the winner can be co-coach for the day, or leader of the warm-up excercises, or picks the after-game gathering place, first on the bus, or gets a solo stunt. Hopefully you get the picture - an incentive that promotes leadership and skills, yet is a reward at the same time.

My kids always like Subway or McDonalds gift cards. You could also give a prize for knowing how many fouls their player has, who got called for traveling, etc. Review the rules of the game besides just the score will help the girls keep interested as well.
