Hi moms,
I spent last weekend in the hospital. Wed nite into Thurs. like 3 a.m. I had like side sticking pain in my upper chest. It lasted for a few seconds, let me take a breath, then came back for a few more seconds. I then got up went to bathroom #1, had no dizziness or light headiness. I didn't no what it was. I went ER, they checked heart with EKG,blood test, and Eco gram. They said not heart maybe stress. I'm getting tinges of pain in the chest off and on since. I will schedule a stress test soon, besides that they give me no answers. I do have a family history of heart problems mom, dad, and two bothers died of heart all under 70. I'm a little scared not knowing what this is. Any help would be appreciated.

P.S
I do have a large hernia that gives me stomach problems like gas, constipation, and bloating . I also had kidney cancer, right kidney removed. I had gall bladder removed years ago.

What can I do next?

I have been there, had the tests, and told I was fine. Next time it happened, I went to the chiropractor. I had 2 ribs out in the back, and 3 in the front from coughing and sneezing. I literally used to wake up in panic attacks from it every few months. Now, I just wait for the chiro to open and meet him there. It's sore for a few days afterward, but that's all.

You can easily pull the muscles in you chest by sneezing or coughing really hard. It can be like a muscle cramp any where else. It hurts like the dickens and can feel like a heart attack. Ask you doctor about it.

Have the stress test as heart problems are the first thing to rule out. Second would be gall bladder, but you have already had it removed. Ulcers are another possibility, or a hiatal hernia (which is what the cause of my chest pains turned out to be. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to diagnose, as there are many possible causes --- keep ruling things out until you find the cause.

My husband went to the ER with chest pains. After all the testing you mentioned plus more, it ended up being esophagitis. He has frequent heartburn that had caused inflammation in his esophagus. They put him on Omeprazole and it went away. Proton pump inhibitors have side effects though...so you may not want to take them long term. He takes them occasionally now and supplements with Tums if needed. Also he has a family history of bad hearts...but after all the testing we now know his is fine. Sounds like yours is too, so family history doesn't necessarily mean everyone is stuck with the same history.

They will rule out everything to do with your heart with the stress test. Once they rule that out, you may find that they tell you that there is an issue with the sack around your heart.

That's what happened to me. They had me take ibruprophen for a month.

It also could be a panic attack caused by stress. That has happened to me too.

The very best thing you can do is have the stress test done. The more they can rule out, the better.

Since they didn't find what caused this in the ER, you most likely are OK. However, it's important to follow up with your doctor. Make an appointment tomorrow.

Anxiety causes chest pain. With your medical history? I would start keeping a journal about when it happens, what you have ingested and what you were doing.

I would guess, anxiety.

An ER is for emergencies. They make sure you are stable, but they usually don't go into a bunch of testing in order to diagnose. You should see your primary care physician for diagnosis.
